Margaret S. Pomeroy, of Eustis, FL, formerly of Tavares, FL, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010 at the age of 91 years. She was born in Corning, NY and moved to Tavares in 1956. Margaret retired as a unit secretary from Waterman Hospital after 23 years of service. She was a member of the Asbury Covenent Church in Tavares. Years ago she was very active as a Girl Scout Assistant Leader and in the 4-H club. Margaret was preceded in death in February of 1973 by her husband, Lores Kline Pomeroy and in May of 2001 by her son, Lores Kim Pomeroy. She is remembered by her daughter, Shelley Tanner of Umatilla, FL; her brothers, Ralph Scudder and Russell Scudder, both of Corning, NY and David Scudder of Arizona; 4 grandchildren, Adam, Kevin, Karen and Kimberly; as well as 5 great grandchildren, Lori, Crystal, Alex, Raylynn and Mary.

Anita-Ene Abel, age 73, of Tavares, FL passed away at home on Sunday, December 26, 2010. She was born August 18, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Lake County in 1994 from Fairfax, VA. Anita was a secretary to the principals at Washington Irving Middle School in Springfield, VA and retired from Fairfax County School System. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Mt. Dora, Mt. Dora Women s Club, Lake Jem Red Hats, Tavares Boat Club, and the Dead River Gang.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon E. Abel, Sr.; sons, Vernon E. Abel, Jr. of Alexandria, VA, Alfred G. (Sheryl) Abel of St. Mary s, GA; daughters, Shara L. Abel of Bluemont, VA, Anita M. (David) Houchins of Tavares, FL; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends at Steverson Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home, Tavares on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 from 4:00PM until 6:00PM, with a wake service at 5:30PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 9:00AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Mt. Dora. Interment took place at Florida National cemetery, Bushnell, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Hospice, Tavares, FL.
Arrangements were entrusted to Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funerals and Cremations, 226 E. Burleigh Blvd., Tavares, FL 32778.

Harriet W. Bender

Harriet W. Bender, age 85, of Clermont, FL passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011. She was born November 2, 1925 in Marshalltown, Iowa and has lived in Florida for the last 56 years. She is survived by her children, Dee Bender, Mark Bender and Kris Walker, 4 grandchildren and 6, soon to be 7, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Donald R. Bender and son, Gordon Bender.
A Memorial Service was held on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 4:00PM at the Clerbrook RV Resort in Clermont, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice with warm thoughts of Harriet. Harriet will be buried next to her husband at Florida National cemetery in Bushnell. Arrangements were entrusted to Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funerals and Cremations, 226 E. William J. Wingert

William J. Wingert died on January 12, 2011 at Clare Bridge Cottage Senior Living Facility in Leesburg. Bill was born in Wiconisco, PA on September 3, 1923. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. In 1945 he married Ruth V. Rumpf of Ravine, PA. They had two sons: William of Haverford, PA and Douglas, now deceased. Bill graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College and began his teaching career in Hegins, PA in 1948. He retired as superintendent of the Tri-Valley School District in Hegins in 1979. Later that year Bill and Ruth moved to Tavares, FL. Ruth died after 62 years of marriage in October 2007. They were long-time members of St Philip's Lutheran Church of Mt. Dora, FL. Bill will be buried with his wife in St. Philip's Memorial Garden.

Helen Nancy Sinkovich

Ms. Helen Nancy Sinkovich, of Tavares, Florida, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at the age of 70 years. She was born in Fairmont, West Virginia and moved to this area in 1985 from Williamstown, Kentucky. Helen was a retired Nanny. She was a huge Florida Gator fan and enjoyed watching NFL football. She had a passion for butterflies and cats, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandsons.
Helen is remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Cindy Sinkovich of Tavares, FL; brothers, John Sinkovich and his wife, Cindy of West Palm Beach, FL, Roy Sinkovich of Nashville, TN and Flint Manning of Weirsdale, FL; sisters, Nellie Catevenis of Gainesville, FL, Jeanette Johnson of Dunnellon, FL and Alice Locke of Ball Ground, GA; as well as her three grandchildren, Christopher Sinkovich, Michael Sinkovich and Jonathan Sinkovich, all of Tavares, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Cornerstone Hospice 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778. A Memorial Ceremony was held on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 1:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. James Allen "Jim" Spooner

James Allen
Mr. James Allen Jim Spooner, of Tavares, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at the age of 47 years. He was born in Portland, Oregon to Carl and Janet Spooner. Jim moved to central Florida from Massachusetts in the early 1990 s and then returned to Oregon several years later only to return to this area 18 months ago. He worked in construction until he was injured on the job, about 10 years ago. Jim loved to go fishing and camping and just enjoyed the outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Dihanna and his two daughters, Ashliegh Ervin and Elizabeth Spooner, all of Tavares; his mother, Janet Spooner of Tavares; brothers, Ron Spooner of Portland, Oregon, Carl Spooner of Prineville, Oregon and Jack and his wife, Debbie Spooner of Roseville, California; sister, Beth Halstead of Tavares; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial ceremony was held on Friday, April 8 at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Arrangements were entrusted to Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funerals and Cremations, Tavares, FL, 352-343-4444.

Captain John M. Foley, DC, US Navy (RET), passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the age of 77 years. John was born in Baltimore, MD on November 16, 1933. He graduate from Towson Catholic High School, Towson, MD, in 1951; received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Loyola College, Baltimore, MD, in 1955; was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Dental surgery by the University of Maryland in 1959; and completed a Master of Science Degree in Dentistry at Indiana University, Purdue University in 1971.
Captain Foley was a member of the Faculty of the Dental School University of Maryland and a National Institute of Health Research Fellow from 1959 through 1964. He was augmented to the Navy Dental Corps from the Ready Reserve in 1966. He was ordered as Assistant Senior Dental Officer to US Navy Support Activity, Danang, Vietnam, where he served from April 1967 to April 1968. He was selected for a five year residency in Oral Pathology which he completed in June of 1973 at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC. Captain Foley established the Oral Histopathology Section at Naval Hospital, San Diego, CA. In June 1978, he assumed the Chairmanship of the department of Oral Pathology, national Naval Dental center, Bethesda, MD. He reported to Naval Medical Command, Pacific Region in August 1984 as Assistant Chief of Staff for Dentistry and from May 1986 through July 1989 served as Commanding officer, Naval Dental Clinic, Pearly Harbor, Hawaii with additional duties as Dental consultant US Pacific Command, Fleet dental officer, CINCPACFLT, Force Dental Officer COMSUBPAC and Dental Officer COMNAVBASE, Pearl Harbor.
Captain Foley is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral Pathology and holds a Fellowship in the American Academy of Oral Pathology and the International and American College of Dentists. He is a member of the American dental Association and the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States.
Captain Foley has earned the following decorations and awards: Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service medal, navy Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal with bronze star and the Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars. He retired in 1992 after 34 years of service.
Captain Foley was married to Dolores A. Laurie Skane of Baltimore, who preceded him in death on February 12, 2002. John is remembered by his brother, Timothy (Nancy) Foley of Tavares; brother-in-law, Martin B. (Katherine) Skane of Falling Waters, WV; nephews, Sean (Jennifer) Foley of Hampstead, MD and M. Daniel (Barbara) Skane of Mechanicsville, MD; niece, Lisa Ann (Jon) Harrison of Troy, MI; niece, Laura Ann Davis of Damascus, MD and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews. The family invites friends to gather on Tuesday, April 19 from 5-7 pm at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, at 9:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Mount Dora. Burial will be held later in the week at El Camino Memorial Park, San Diego, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested a donation be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 North Randolph Street, Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203 (www.nmcrs.org) or St. Patrick Catholic Church, 6803 Old Hwy 441 S., Mount Dora, FL 32757.

David Willet Decker

David Willet Decker, age 80, of Leesburg, FL passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2011. David was born and raised in Janesville, WI. He married his high school sweetheart, Nellie, and they had two beautiful daughters, Linda and Shannon. Through hard work, he moved his way up into executive management with Spiegel, Inc, and he retired years later. David always had a great sense of humor with a zest for life, and he followed his lifelong passion for golf into his 80th year.
He is survived by his two daughters, Linda and Shannon, along with his three grandchildren, Kirk, Ryan, and Tattianna. David is dearly loved and missed, and he will always be remembered as a wonderful father and grandfather.
The family received friends at Steverson Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home, Tavares on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 3:00PM until 8:00PM. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 10:00AM at Steverson Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of David Decker to Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Rd., Tavares, FL 32778. Arrangements were entrusted to Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funerals and Cremations, 226 E. Burleigh Blvd., Tavares, FL 32778.
