Stella McClure, Bradenton
Stella McClure, 101, of Bradenton, died March 30, 2004, in Blake Hospital after a short illness.
Mrs. McClure came to Florida on her honeymoon in 1925 and moved from Fort Myers to Bradenton in 1929. Her husband, "Mac," managed the A & P Grocery Store in Bradenton for 40 years and she taught sixth grade at Ballard Elementary School. Her teaching career spanned three decades from the early 40s to the mid 60s. Mrs. McClure was a graduate of Florida Southern College.
Previous to her move to Florida, Stella taught all grades in a one-room school house in Iowa and also coached the local school basketball team. Mrs. McClure was a past member of the Manatee River Garden Club and was a lifetime member at the Manatee County Retired Teachers' Association. She also, after retirement, was a volunteer at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Stella, at the close of her teaching career, was honored with the placement of her name on a vintage student desk in the schoolhouse of the Manatee Historic Village. In later years, she and her husband operated McClure Realty in Manatee County.
At the age of 101, Stella remained mentally and physically active. She attributed her mental acuity to a lifelong habit of crossword puzzles everyday.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Dan) Nolan of Bradenton and Margaret (Mrs. Charles) Favero of Clearwater; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m., Friday, April 2, at Shannon Funeral Home, Town Chapel, 1015 14th St. W., followed by the funeral at 10:30 a.m., officiated by Reverend Harvard Warren. John Lowell Phinney Sr., Bradenton
John Lowell Phinney Sr., formerly of Kansas City, Mo., passed on after a long illness at Heritage Park, Bradenton, March 24, 2004.
He relocated there in 1996, enjoying his retirement after a successful career in business.
John is survived by his best friend and wife of 52 years, Terry Anne Phinney, Bradenton; brother, Gene, and sister-in-law, Mary Lou "Muggs" Phinney, Appleton City, Mo.; son, John "Jack" L. Phinney Jr., Kansas City; son, Michael E. Phinney, Kansas City; daughter, Susan Weber, Jefferson City, Mo.; daughter, Ursula "Cubbie" Anne, and son-in-law, William Stemm, Holmes Beach; and his beloved five grandchildren.
John was born in Appleton City, Mo., on Christmas Day 1925, to Ray and Kathryn Phinney of Bates County, Mo. He graduated from Rockhurst College in 1958. John started working at age six in the farm fields of his humble Ozark birthplace. He is greatly missed by friends and family.
There will be a Mass and funeral services at 9:30 a.m. on April 5, to be held at St. Joseph Catholic church in Bradenton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Guardian Angel Fund for St. Joseph School at 2990 26th St. W., Bradenton, Fla. 34205.
Jeannette Gates Warner, Perico Island
Jeannette Gates Warner, 85, of Perico Island, died Tuesday, March 30 in Manatee Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Ms. Warner was a native of Bradenton, and the daughter of Robert Gates Warner and Josephine Von der Weis Warner. She was the great granddaughter of Bradenton pioneer settler Josiah Gates.
During her business career, Ms. Warner was a legal secretary with her family and Davis Island Development Co. in Tampa and retired as a regional manager from the Virginia State Dept. of Transportation in Suffolk, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Robert and Jack Warner, and sisters, Emma Hurrell, Mary Jane Darden and Kathryn Weis Brightman.
Survivors include one brother, Donald Gene Warner of Suffolk, Va., and numerous nieces and nephews in Tidewater, Virginia and Florida.
A member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Ms. Warner requested private graveside services be conducted by Griffith-Cline Funeral Home at Mansion Memorial Park in Ellenton. A memorial service will be held at her maternal family church in Port Clinton, Ohio, at a future date.

Born in Bradenton, and a lifelong resident, she was a former Office Assistant for Porges, Hamlin and Knowles, P.A. She attended Braden River Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Richard S. Foskey; sons, Cory K. and Daniel B. Foskey; parents, Billie J. and Dorothy B. Coleman; and brother, William J. Coleman, all of Bradenton.

Gordon James Hay, 81, of Bradenton, died March 28, 2004.
He was born on October 13, 1922 in Racine, Wis., and moved to Bradenton in 1986 from Pittsburgh, Pa. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene of Bradenton.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Janet, and a son, Gordon J., Jr. He is survived by his wife, Jo; a son, Randolph S. (Stephanie) of Franklin, Mass., a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Hay of Plaistow, N.H.; a brother, David of Henderson, Nev.; a sister, Donna Carlsen of Kenosha, Wis.; and a granddaughter, Alexandria.
A memorial service will be 9 a.m., Thursday, April 1, at First Church of the Nazarene, 1616 59th Street West, Bradenton.
