Irene M. Carter, Barrie, Ontario, and Bradenton
Irene M. Carter, 89, passed away peacefully, Nov. 8, 2003, at home in Barrie, Ontario, surrounded by family.
Irene and her husband, the late Harold Carter, were winter residents in Bradenton for over 30 years. Born in Essen, Germany, she immigrated to Canada as a teen to Vauxhall, Alberta. She met and married the late Harold Carter in Calgary, Alberta, in 1937. In Toronto, she founded and ran a nursery school for several years. She later entered the business world, where she developed a long and rewarding career. During this period, she was an early volunteer President of the Toronto Musicians Credit Union. Upon retirement, Irene taught for several years at Humber College. She enjoyed travel, winters in Florida, and was an enthusiastic bridge player. Since 1998, she was an active volunteer at the Grove Park Home. In memory of her husband, Irene endowed the Harold Carter Memorial Fellowship in string performance at the University of Toronto's School of Music.
She is survived by her daughters, Sylvia and Carol, her brother, Bill, sons-in-law, Larry and David, grandchildren, Laura, Tina, Eric, Stephanie and Karman, many relatives in western Canada and many cherished friends.
Cremation was arranged by the Steven R. Bridge Funeral Home. Her ashes rest with those of her beloved husband in the Cremorial Gardens of the Barrie Union Cemetery.
Friends are invited to join the family in a Celebration of Music in memory of Irene, with Csaba Koazo, first recipient of the Harold Carter Memorial Fellowship, on Saturday, Dec. 6th, at 1:30 p.m., at Grace United Church, 350 Grove Street East, Barrie, Ontario. Born April 9, 1960, in Youngstown, Ohio, he moved to Manatee County from New York City, N.Y., three years ago. He was a Real Estate Legal Assistant and lease coordinator, worked for the law offices of Debevoise and Plimpton, A.T. Kearney Inc., Prokhauser Rose Getz and Mendelsohn all of New York City and Edward J. Debartolo Corp., Youngstown, Ohio. He was of Roman Catholic faith. Memberships include past President of Community Board Bellevue Medical Center, New York, N.Y.; Director of Dukakis for President Campaign for Mahoning County, Ohio; Assistant Coordinator Celeste for Governor campaign Mahoning County, Ohio; Act-up; active in many civic and social organizations, precinct committee man in Mahoning County; candidate for State of Ohio School Board; very involved in politics in Ohio and New York City. He attended Ohio State University and received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics/Political Science from Youngstown State University, Ohio.
Survivors include his parents Nancy and Jerry Lawman of Bradenton; one sister Lori (Ken) Weber and their daughter Melissa of Bradenton; two brothers Jeffrey (Jodi) and their daughter Brittaney of Sharpsville, Pa., and Jerry (Terri) Lawman and their children Alyssa, Jerry and Joey of Poland, Ohio.

Charles H. Maxwell, 84, of Bradenton, died November 23, 2003, at Blake City Medical Center, Bradenton.

Born in Wyndmoor, Pa., on December 31, 1918, Charles H. Maxwell came to Manatee County from Oreland, Pa., in 1997. He worked for 40 years with the U.S. Agriculture Department in Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a decorated WWII vet. He was a volunteer fireman for 50 years at the Wyndmoor Hose Company, and a past Commander of the American Legion Post, Wyndmoor, Pa.
Survivors include his wife Shirley L. Maxwell, Bradenton; daughters Dorothy Maxwell, Warminster, Pa., Mary Maxwell, Myakka City, and Lt. Commander Shirley Maxwell, Oceanside, Calif.

Ralph Overstreet, 83, Bradenton, died November 28, 2003.

Survived by wife Jean, two sons, Alan and Harold, sister Cleo Brown, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Hazel Andrews Reed, Bradenton
Hazel Andrews Reed of Summerfield Retirement Residence, Bradenton, died November 26, 2003.
She was born October 28, 1903, a daughter of George R. and Clara McCown Andrews. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Although she had lived many places, she maintained her membership in the Enon Valley United Presbyterian Church. She was a retired teacher, having taught both in Pennsylvania and New York States for a total of 37 years. She was a graduate of Slippery Rock Normal School, Penn State University and received her master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association, the New York State Retired Teachers Association and AARP. After joining the WAAC in 1942, she received training in physical therapy at the University of Wisconsin and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. She served a total of three years.
Hazel was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Colman Quinn, and also by her second husband, James M. Reed. In addition, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rugh Magale, and her brother, Arthur Andrews.
Survivors are four nieces and nephews; Thomas Liston, Dailey, W.Va.; Gerald Liston, Wadsworth, Ohio; Sue Kelley, Hubbard, Ohio, and Janet Moslener, Pennington, N.J.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in the Enon Valley United Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at 11 a.m. Following the memorial service, a luncheon for family and friends will be held in the Social Room of the church. Interment will be in Little Beaver Cemetery, Enon Valley, Pennsylvania. Memorials may be given to Enon Valley United Presbyterian Church or to the donor's choice of charity. The National Cremation Society of Sarasota is in charge of cremation arrangements.

Carl D. Still, 99, of Bradenton, died November 27, 2003, at Blake Medical Center, Bradenton.

Born in Oakville, Ky., Carl D. Still came to Manatee County from East St. Louis, Ill., in 1988. He owned a barbershop in East St. Louis for 50 years. He worshiped at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church. He was a Deacon and Choir member of the First Baptist Church in East St. Louis for 40 years.
Survivors include daughter Elaine Renshaw, Bradenton; sister Nina Bailey, Columbia, Tenn.; brother Ben Still, Kansas City, Mo.; two grandsons, Robert W. Renshaw Jr. of Madbury, N.H. and John D. Renshaw of Omaha, Neb.; seven great-grandchildren.

Randy Scott Willard, 43, of Bradenton Beach, died November 26, 2003.
Born in Medina, Ohio, he moved to Manatee County in 1968 from Hinckley, Ohio. He served in U.S. Navy. He formerly was bartender and bar manager for the Seafood Shack Restaurant in Cortez.
Survived by sons Ricky Halbert of Bradenton Beach and Cody Colby of Bradenton, mother Ruth Curtiss of Bradenton, sister Robin Willard of Bradenton, and brother Rick Willard of Chardon, Ohio.

Cloyce M. DeSear, 83, of Bradenton, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003. She was born Nov. 9, 1920 in Hosford, FL and moved to Bradenton in 1922. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Vernon and three sisters, Lois Tharpe, Hazel Elmore and June Long. She is survived by her sons, Vernon and wife Peggy of Bradenton and their children, Courtney and Jordan, George and wife Julie of Bradenton and their children, Ann and Matthew, daughter Veryce and husband Dan English of Fairview, NC and their children Jamie Mooney, Ashlee Liebel and Heather English and four great-grandchildren, Bryce and Todd Liebel and Travis and Kevin Mooney, and sister, Gladys Johnson of Quincy, FL. She was a member of Bradenton Woman's Club, Bradenton Country Club, Bradenton Yacht Club, Bradenton Christian's Women's Club, First Baptist Church of Bradenton and Marie Connor Circle at the church. She was a graduate of Manatee High School in 1939. Memorial service will be Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel at First Baptist Church of Bradenton, 1306 Manatee Ave. W. Rev. Born in Moorehead City, North Carolina, she came to Manatee County from North Carolina in 1955. She was a Cook at Mulcahy's Dog House for 20 years. She was a member of Women of the Moose Lodge, #1225 in Palmetto.
