John Harold Medlin, Bradenton
John Harold Medlin, M.D., 84, of Bradenton, died June 13, 2004.
Dr. Medlin was a Surgeon at both Victoria Hospital and Doctors' Hospital in Miami and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, WW II.
Survived by daughters Michelle Fowler and Lee Wright and three grandchildren.

Julia Carlburg Steffens, Bradenton
Julia Carlburg Steffens, 87, of Bradenton, died June 13, 2004.
Survived by sons, Bror and Timothy; and stepgrandson, Duane Phillips.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m., Friday, June 18 at Christ Episcopal Church, 4030 Manatee Ave. West, Bradenton. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes, 43rd Street Chapel, in charge.

Jerry Franklin, Thompson, Bradenton
Jerry Franklin Thompson, 64, of Bradenton, died June 12, 2004.
He was born October 25, 1939, in Wichita, Kansas, and moved to Bradenton in 1999 from Fairfax, Virginia. He retired in 1999 as an S.E.S. Executive for the Department of Energy. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Hibiscus Society and the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and woodworker.
He is survived by his wife, of over 30 years, Carolyn; mother, Alberta Thompson, of Manassas, Virginia; sons, James Emery and Harper Franklin, both of Bradenton; daughter, Lisa Lynn, of Gaithersburg, Maryland; and brother, Warren Thompson, of Manassas, Virginia.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 17, from 9 a.m., until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m., at St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church. For those unable to attend, there will be a guest book available at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel, 1221 53rd Avenue East, on Wednesday. Burial will be at Mansion Memorial Park in Ellenton. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church, 11315 Palmbrush Trail, Bradenton, Fla. 34202.

Joseph "Joe" Tomczak

Joseph "Joe" Tomczak, 85, Bradenton, died May 29, 2004, at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 3, 5-7 p.m., at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel, 1221 53rd Ave E, Bradenton. Service will be held on Friday, June 4, 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Oneco, 1700 51st Ave East, Bradenton. Pastor John Isom will be officiating. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Oneco, 1700 51st Avenue East, Bradenton, FL 34203.
Born in Scranton, Pa., March 10, 1919, he came to Manatee County from Silver Spring, Md., in 1987. He was an electronics engineer in research and development department of defense. He worshiped at First Baptist Church of Oneco. He served in the Navy during WWII. He was a member of Manatee Radio Club Mount Hermon Lodge #179 in Maryland and was a charter member of Colesville Baptist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Survivors include his wife of over 63 years, Margaret "Peg" Tomczak of Bradenton; daughter Sharon (William R.) Napper III of Silver Spring, Md.; son Stan (Lynn) Tomczak of Bradenton; one grandson, William R. Napper IV.

Robert J. Kowall
Parrish - Robert J. Kowall, 66, of Parrish, died May 28, 2004.
He was born August 19, 1937, in Greenwich, Conn., and was raised in Port Chester, N.Y. He moved to Parrish from Westport, Conn., in 1998, where he was a long-term resident.
He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., and the University of Florida. He served in the Navy both on active duty and reserves for 20 years and retired as a Commander. His career was split between shipboard and aviation as a naval flight officer.
Mr. Kowall was a longtime employee of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh, Boston, New York and Atlanta. He was past president of the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute and on the Board of Directors of the Concrete Industry Board, both in New York. He was a past member of the Shorehaven Golf Club, Norwalk, Conn., and River Wilderness Golf and Country Club, Parrish, Fla.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Maureen, son Robert Jr. of New York City, daughter Kathleen of Miami Beach, Fla., and sister Leona Citrano of Trumbull, Conn. He was predeceased by his son Michael in 1986.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church, 12001 69th St. E., Parrish. Internment will be private. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Michael Kowall Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Staples High School Tuition Grants Committee, PO Box 665, Westport, CT 06880.

Wilfred "Walt" Graustein, 92, of Palmetto, died May 31, 2004 in Sarasota. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 2, at 9:30 a.m. at Gillette Cemetery, Palmetto, Fla. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home Mansion Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Emily G. "Jane" Ellis, 83, of Bradenton, died May 29, 2004. She was born in Lempster, N.H., May 14, 1921.

Kevin Mulling, Bradenton
Kevin Mulling, 48, of Bradenton, died May 29, 2004, at his residence.
Memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 3, 11 a.m., at Mansion Memorial Park, 1400 36th Avenue East, Ellenton, Fla. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home Mansion Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Make a Wish Foundation, 2600 N. Central Avenue, Suite 936, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
Born in Northhampton, England, September 16, 1955, he came to Manatee County from Memphis, Tenn., in 1999. He was a mechanical engineer, and he earned his degree from the University of Florida. He was of Baptist faith. He was a golfer, and he loved Mustang cars and playing cards.
Survivors include daughter Marcie Mulling of Russelville, Ark.; sons Matthew Mulling of Winter Park, Fla., and Adam Mulling of Russellville, Ark.; sisters Stephanie Mulling of Bradenton and Beverly Mulling of Atlanta, Ga.; parents Patricia and Bobby Mulling of Bradenton.

Suzanne Council, Palmetto
Suzanne Council, 52, of Palmetto, died Friday, May 28 at her home.
Services will be held on Thursday, June 3 at 3 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Palmetto, with Dr. Paul Hartsfield officiating.
Miss Council was born on July 13, 1951, in Gainesville, Fla. She was a graduate of the Florida Atlantic University and was in the United States Air Force for 14 years. At the time of her death she was executive secretary of C.T.C. Inc.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Jane Edwards Council, and her brother, Charles Thomas Council. She is survived by her father, Dr. Charlie T. Council, and his wife, June, of Albany, Ga., and Sanibel, Fla. She is also survived by a niece, Catherine Tricia Council, of Boca Raton, Fla.

John Edward Michaels Jr.
Bradenton - John Edward Michaels Jr. of Bradenton died May 28, 2004, at home.
Visitation is Monday from 2-8 p.m. at Toale Brothers Bradenton Chapel, 912 53rd Avenue West with a rosary Monday at 7 p.m. A funeral liturgy is Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Catholic Church with Father Edward D. Moretti, V.G. officiating. Entombment will follow in Mansion Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Catholic church, 2850 75th Street West, Bradenton, Fla. 34209 or American Heart Association, P.O. Box 21475, St. Petersburg, Fla. 33742.
Mr. Michaels was born in Baltimore, Md., and moved to Manatee County from Redford Township, Mich., 24 years ago. He worked as a processing engineer for the Ford Motor Company, retiring in 1979, and was a member of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Violet; daughters Laurie Ann Syme of Warren, Mich., and Karen Marie (George) Stolt of Myakka City, Fla; sister Dolores L. Long of South Lyon, Mich.; brothers Leonard F. (Mary Lou) Michaels of Leroy, Mich., and Clermont, Fla., and Charles (Linda) Michael of Leesburg, Fla.; grandchildren Shawny Marie Syme, John Stephen Shanks and Lisa Marie Shanks; sister-in-law Susan Marie DaRoma of Detroit, Mich. Arrangements by Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Bradenton Chapel.
