Jerome "Jerry" Johnson, 72, of Bradenton, died Sept. 29, 2002, in Warren General Hospital in Warren, Pa.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at Peterson-Blick Funeral Home Inc. in Warren. Memorial service will be 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Marcus Briggs officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 185 Hospital Dr., Warren, Pa. 16365 or to the American Cancer Society, 600 U.S. 301 Blvd. W., Suite 136, Bradenton, Fla. 34205
Born in Jamestown, N.Y., Mr. Johnson came to Manatee County from Warren. He retired in 1992 as a service manager for Midtown Motors in Warren. He was Lutheran. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of American Legion Post 135, Moose Lodge 109 and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club.
Survivors include his wife, Laura; three daughters, Jeanne Steele and Nancy, both of Warren, and Donna M. Scioscia of Oak Ridge, N.J.; two sons, Scott, of Russell, Pa., and Craig, of Warren; a brother, Warren, of Warren; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Gordon P. Leavenworth, Bradenton
Gordon P. Leavenworth, 84, of Bradenton, died Sept. 24, 2002, in Manatee Memorial Hospital.
There will be no visitation. Memorial service will be 12 p.m. Sunday at Kirby Stewart American Legion Post 24 in Bradenton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Manasota Elks Lodge Harry Anna Trust Fund, 6810 14th St. W., Bradenton, Fla. 34207.
Born in Waterbury, Conn., Mr. Leavenworth came to Manatee County from Bourne, Mass., in 1990. He was the owner and operator of a dairy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 24, Manasota Elks Lodge 2734, Charles W. Moore Masonic Lodge of Fitchburg, Mass., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two sons, Tank, of Bradenton, and Robert, of Bourne; a sister, Esther Ringquist of Bourne; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

John G. Manning, Bradenton
John G. Manning, 90, of Bradenton, died Sept. 29, 2002, at home.
Visitation will be 12-1 p.m. Thursday at Brown & Sons Funeral Home, 5624 26th St. W. Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mike Faust officiating. Burial will be in Palmetto. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Sahib Temple, 600 N. Beneva Road, Sarasota, Fla. 34232.
Born in North Street, Mich., Mr. Manning came to Manatee County from Port Huron, Mich., in 1976. He worked for Chrysler Corp. for 35 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 374 in Fort Gratiot, Mich., Scottish Rite of Tampa and was a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice K.; a daughter, Clara Grace Pulford of Bradenton; and two grandchildren.

Jack G. Pounds, Bradenton
Jack G. Pounds, 81, of Bradenton, died Sept. 29, 2002, at home.
There will be no visitation. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Parkway Christian Church, 6960 Prospect Road in Sarasota, with the Rev. Mike Faust officiating. Brown & Sons Crematory is in charge of cremation arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Bradenton Hospice House, c/o Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238 or to Manatee Religious Services, 3111 29th Ave. E., Bradenton, Fla. 34208.
Born in Olean, N.Y., Mr. Pounds came to Manatee County in 1979. He was a member of Parkway Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post No. 0772 in Bolivar, N.Y., and a volunteer for Manatee Religious Services.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a daughter, Susan Knight of Bradenton; two sons, Douglas, of Chatsworth, Calif., and Bradley, of Bradenton; two brothers, Richard, of Little Genessee, N.Y., and William, of Chicora, Pa.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Frank Slomba, Holmes Beach
Frank Slomba, 82, of Holmes Beach, died Sept. 26, 2002, in Bradenton.
Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Ellis and the Rev. Bernard Evanofski officiating. Bradenton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Slomba came to Manatee County from St. Paul, Minn., in 1982. He was the personnel manager and safety director for Gould National Battery in St. Paul for 25 years. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 24 and the Holy Name Society at St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rose M.; two daughters, Judith Klepperich of Mendota Heights, Minn., and Rosemarie Knick of Pompton Plains, N.J.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Irene Sperellis, Bradenton
Irene Sperellis, 80, of Bradenton, died Sept. 29, 2002, in Blake Medical Center.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m. at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel, 1221 53rd Ave. E. Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 7671 N. Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota, with the Rev. Frank Kirlangitis officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to American Parkinson Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., Suite 4B, Staten Island, N.Y. 10305 or to St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 7671 N. Born in Albion, Calif., Mrs. Sperellis came to Manatee County from Safety Harbor in 2001. She was a factory worker with Tri Metal Corp. in Cleveland. She attended St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Sarasota.
Survivors include her husband, Elefterios; a daughter, Diane Ameres of Bradenton; a son, Thomas, of North Royalton, Ohio; three sisters, Vasso Demos of Clearwater, Maria Verges of Chicago, and Froso Poulos of Athens, Greece; a brother, Pavlo Psyropoulos of Athens; and three grandchildren.

Walter William Whilden, Palmetto
Walter William Whilden, 92, of Palmetto, died Sept. 15, 2002.
Memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at The Rotunda in Griffith-Cline Manasota Memorial Gardens. National Cremation Society Sarasota Chapter is in charge of cremation arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 1750 17th St., Suite A., Sarasota, Fla. 34234.
Born in Minnesota, Mr. Whilden came to Manatee County from Sarasota County. He worked as a plasterer and farmer before retiring. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gillette in Ellenton. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include two sisters, Martha Harroun of Michigan, and Evelyn Ramer of Minnesota; several stepchildren; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Margaret Zavodney Gabric, Fort Worth, Texas
Margaret Zavodney Gabric, 86, of Fort Worth, Texas and formerly of Bradenton, died Sept. 27, 2002, in Fort Worth.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Manasota Memorial Park, 1221 53rd Ave. E. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Frostburg, Md., Mrs. Zavodney Gabric was a former resident of Manatee County.
Survivors include a son, Ron, of Fort Worth; a sister, Magdalene Daniel of Ocala; a brother, Larry Zavodney of Akron, Ohio; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

John A. Carlson, Bradenton
John A. Carlson, 85, of Bradenton, died Sept. 27, 2002, in Manatee Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hope Lutheran Church, 4635 26th St. W., with the Rev. David G. Hinman Sr. officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 24 of Bradenton. Inurnment will be in Manasota Memorial Park, Bradenton. Born in St. Paul, Minn., Mr. Carlson came to Manatee County from there in 1977. He was a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in St. Paul for 28 years. He attended Hope Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Palmetto Elks Lodge 2449, American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 24, Moose Lodge 8 in Bradenton, Sahib Shrine in Sarasota and Manatee Masonic Lodge 31. He was past commander of Eastside Post in St. Paul.
Survivors include his wife, Marion E.; two daughters, Susan, of Beaverton, Ore., and Sally, of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands; a sister, Mildred Gund of North St. Paul, Minn.; and two grandchildren.

Mary Martin, Bradenton
Mary Martin, 75, of Bradenton, formerly of Anna Maria, died Sept. 27, 2002, in Westminster Asbury Towers in Bradenton.
There will be no visitation or services. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Butler City, Ohio. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manatee Avenue Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Cincinnati, Mrs. Martin came to Manatee County from West Chester, Ohio, in 1982. She was a school teacher. She attended St. Bernard Catholic Church in Holmes Beach. She was a member of the Garden Club in Cincinnati.
Survivors include a sister, Ruth Ann Carey of West Chester, and a brother, Thomas J. Osterman of Kildeer, Ill.

Louise McMillan, Arcadia
Louise McMillan, 82, of Arcadia, and formerly of Bradenton, died Sept. 27, 2002, in Sunbridge Care & Rehab of Bradenton.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, 1221 53rd Ave. E. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Green officiating. Burial will be in Skyway Memorial Gardens, Palmetto. Memorial contributions may be made to Southeastern Guide Dogs Inc., 4210 77th St. E., Palmetto, Fla. 34221.
Born in New Albany, Ind., Mrs. McMillan came to Manatee County from New Castle, Ind., in 1980. She was a homemaker. She was Mormon.
Survivors include a daughter, Vivian Mae Owen of Arcadia; a son, Herbert Leon, of Arcadia; a brother, Ollie Kennedy of Phoenix; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Betty C. Nelson, Bradenton
Betty C. Nelson, 81, of Bradenton, died Sept. 28, 2002, at home.
Services will be private, with the Rev. Ron Walker officiating. Burial will be in Manasota Memorial Park, Bradenton. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Mrs. Nelson came to Manatee County from Zion, Ill., in 1986. She worked for Illinois Beach Lodge in Zion. She was Protestant. She was a member of Eastern Star White Shriner in Newmilns, Scotland.
Survivors include her husband, Paul L.; two daughters, Victoria N. Short of Myakka City, and Donna A. Melrose of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; three sons, Brian R. Melrose of Waukegan, Ill., Charles, of Kissimmee, and Keith, of Miami; a sister, Nancy M. Fayden of Weymouth, England; a brother, Thomas Ross of Slough, England; and seven grandchildren.
