John Jeffrey Egley, age 43, of Tampa, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001. Born Nov. 7, 1957 in Clewiston, John moved to Tampa from Fort Meyers six years ago. He was a registered nurse, a member of the First Baptist Church of Citrus Park, and employed by Pediatric Health Choice. He served in the U.S. Army from 1977-1981.
Survivors include: his wife, Stephanie and son Brandon Egley of Tampa; daughter, Jennifer Renee Egley of Okeechobee; father, Ron and Kitty Egley of Clewiston; mother, Edith Egley of Clewiston; brother, Robert Egley of St. Petersburg and sister, Terri Barbar of Old Town.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Sept. 30, at the First Baptist Church of Citrus Park in Tampa, with Pastor Ron Beck officiating.
Frances Naomi Phillips
Frances Naomi Phillips, age 69, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at her residence. Born Jan. 9, 1932 in Kenansville, Mrs. Phillips had been a resident of Okeechobee for 25 years.
Mrs. Phillips was a homemaker and attended the Sunrise Tabernacle Church. She enjoyed singing and performing her whole life was a member of The Florida Harvesters Gospel group.
Preceded in death by sister Nell Thigpen and brother Trigg Arnold.
Survivors include: her husband of nine years, Earl M. Phillips; daughter, Sherrill Freeman and husband Mike of Davie; sons, Wallace Hart Jr. of Davie and Dennis Hart and wife Brenda of Habira, Ga.; sisters, Doris Stanley of Clewiston and Lois Arnold of Palmdale; half-sister, Inez Kelley of Tallahassee; six grandchildren; and, one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 1, from 5 until 7 p.m. and an hour before funeral service on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Bass Funeral Home with Brother Ray Jones officiating.
Interment will follow in Ortona Cemetery.
All arrangements are entrusted to the Bass Funeral Home.
Gary K. Plank
Gary K. Plank, age 54, of Bristol, Ind., died Sept. 27, 2001, at Goshen General Hospital. Born June 20, 1947, in Elkhart, Ind. to Kenneth D. Plank and V. Bernice Sanford.
Mr. Plank was a bricklayer for Ziolkowski Construction Company in South Bend, Ind., a member of VFW # 1342 in Syracuse, Ind., and American Legion #210 in Middlebury, Ind. He was a graduate of South Broward High School in Hollywood and went to South Broward Community College for three years before being drafted into the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
Preceded in death by a brother Sanford Plank.
Survivors include: wife, Sheri L. Plank of Bristol, Ind.; two daughters, Jessica Plank and Jackie Plank both of Goshen; step-son Ronnie A. Harper of Jimtown; parents Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth and Bernice Plank of Okeechobee; and, a brother Jerry D. Plank of Strasburg, Ohio.
Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 1, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Bristol Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Bristol Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home with Tom Harding, Chaplain of VFW # 1342 officiating.
Cremation will follow service.

Andrew Addison Armstrong
Andrew Addison Armstrong, age 80, died Friday, July 18, 2003. Born April 16, 1923, in Staten Island, N.Y., the son of Myrtle and Andrew Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong has been a resident of Florida since 1941, a long time resident of Broward County and lived in Sunshine Ranches for 26 years. He recently moved to Okeechobee from Wellington. Mr. Armstrong was an artist and sign painter since he was a teenager.
Survivors include: his wife of 40 years, Frances Josephine Armstrong; five daughters, Linda Sheridan, Kathy Kendrick, Gayle Ling, Elizabeth Ann Gaab and Deborah Carmela Dew; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; uncle, Clifford Lissenden; sister, Jeanette; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Many thanks to the kind and compassionate professionals who cared for him in his last days and to his wonderful doctors, Dr. Rohan Faria and Dr. I. Basil Keller, just to mention a few.
A memorial service will be held on Aug. 2, at 2 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 8250 S.R. 70 West, Okeechobee.

Grover C. "Red" Finger
Grover C. "Red" Finger, age 86, died in Fort Bassinger at his residence in Hidden Acres Estates.
Mr. Finger lived in Okeechobee from 1931 to 1934. He moved to Naples in 1949 where he owned and operated Naples Steel Products. He retired in 1985 and moved to Fort Bassinger.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry A. Finger.
Survivors include: Frances, his wife of 66 years; two sons, Grover C. Finger, III and Mark Finger, both of Naples; one daughter, Patricia Ann Gaimari of Lorida; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 1, from 11 a.m., until funeral service time at noon at the Anderson Funeral Home, 3654 Palm Beach Blvd., Fort Myers.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his memory to Good Shepherd Hospice, 2121 Lakeview Dr., Sebring, FL 33870 (863) 471-3700.

Robert Frank Simas, Sr.
Robert Frank Simas, Sr., age 56, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at his residence.
He was born March 1, 1947, in Jacksonville, the son of Ralph and Shirley Russell Simas. Mr. Simas had been a resident of Okeechobee for 16 years. He enjoyed bass fishing and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include: his wife of three years, Nancy Ann Simas of Okeechobee; two sons, Robert Simas, Jr. of Deland and Marvin A. Green of Dalton, Ga.; three daughters, Rebecca Revell of Deland, Ginger Gatlin of Dalton, Ga. and Jennifer Green of Okeechobee; three grandchildren, Syndi, Kevin and Robert, III; one brother, Rebel Simas of Sanford; and two sisters, Rosemary Fowler of Sanford and Rita Simas of Long Beach, Calif.
There will be no visitation or services.

Emma Helen Todriff
Emma Helen Todriff, age 83, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the Laurel Pointe Nursing Home in Fort Pierce. She was born April 16, 1920, in Staten Island, N.Y. Mrs. Todriff had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1999.
Survivors include: two daughters, Judith (Robert) Groth of Okeechobee and Barbara Kelly of Hickory, N.C.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation or services.

Gerald E. Smith
Gerald E. Smith, age 71, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at his residence. He was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Jacobus, Pa., the son of E. Sterling and Pauline Hess Smith. Formerly of York, Pa., Mr. Smith had relocated to Fort Myers in 1982 and moved to Okeechobee 10 years ago. He was in the Marines for three years and Air Force for five years. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard until his retirement. He enjoyed camping.
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Smith.
Survivors include: his beloved wife of 50 years, Marian Smith of Okeechobee; one son, Jeffrey Smith of York, Pa.; one daughter, Karen L. (John) Clugston of Rock Hill, S.C.; two grandsons, Joshua D. Clugston and Jason M. Clugston, both of Bowling Green, Ohio; and one sister, Corinne (Charles) Hager of McDaniel, Md.
There will be no visitation or services.

Katie Arvilla Walker
Katie Arvilla Walker, age 86, of Okeechobee, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital. She was born Feb. 24, 1917, in Monroeville, Ala., daughter of James T. and Lula Ann (English) Norris. Mrs. Walker was a homemaker.
Survivors include: two daughters, Betty Walker and Dianne Hooks; one son, Mike Kearley; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, at 11 a.m., at the Atmore Memorial Chapel in Atmore, Ala. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Atmore Ala.

Mary Jane Willie
Mary Jane Willie, age 54, of Hollywood, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Willie was born Nov. 15, 1948, and raised on the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation. She was a member of the Seminole Bible Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lottie Bowers Shore and husband, Jackie Willie, Jr.
Survivors include: two sons, Paladine Willie and Everett Osceola, both of Hollywood; granddaughter, Xiora Osceola of Hollywood; three brothers, Eddie Shore of Brighton, Jim Shore of Hollywood and Brown Shore of Denver, Colo.; four sisters, Geneva Shore of Hollywood, Nancy Shore, Molly Roberts and Onnie Osceola of Brighton.
Graveside funeral services and interment will be Tuesday, July 29, at 11 a.m., at the Ortona Cemetery in Ortona. Reverend Howard Micco will officiate.

George Beliles, Jr.
George Beliles, Jr., age 74, of Okeechobee, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital. Born Jan. 5, 1929, in Rochester, Ky., Mr. Beliles, formerly of Evansville, Ind., had been a winter resident of Okeechobee for 11 years before moving permanently two years ago. He was a member of Okeechobee Christian Church and loved baseball, basketball and travelling.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Beliles and Ray Beliles.
Survivors include: his beloved wife of 34 years, Georgia M. Beliles of Okeechobee; one son, Raymond (Karen) Allen Beliles of Evansville, Ind.; one daughter, Sheila (Tom) Benthall of Henderson, Ky.; two stepdaughters, Billie (Bill) Buck of Evansville, Ind. and Tanya Schug of Freeville, N.Y.; three grandchildren; five step grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Juanita Bivins of Evansville, Ind.

Melita L. Nix
Melita L. Nix, age 67, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital. Mrs. Nix was born on Sept. 9, 1935, in Okeechobee, daughter of Clarence and Berta (Harden) Lightsey. She was a retired educator from the Okeechobee County School System and a lifetime resident of Okeechobee.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Clarence and Berta Lightsey; brother, Leland Lightsey, husband, Norris Nix; and a son, Phillip Nix.
Survivors include: her children, Gwen (Bruce) Hall, Ginnie (Steve) Stanford, Neil (Ronnie) Nix and Lisa (Howard) Harrison, all of Okeechobee; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Janice Ausburn of Okeechobee.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 29, from 4 until 6 p.m., at the Bass Funeral Home.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, at 10 a.m., at the Evergreen Cemetery. Dr. John W. Keith of the Oakview Baptist Church will officiate.

Albert B. Barrow
Albert B. Barrow, age 88, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at his residence.
Born Sept. 22, 1914, in Hartford, Md., Mr. Barrow had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1992. He was a mechanic by trade and enjoyed fishing and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Barrow; brother, William Barrow; and sister, Margaret Dobson.
Survivors include: two sons, Daniel (Jane) A. Barrow of Plantation and Randall K. Barrow of Sebring; daughter, Sharon (Douglas) M. Ray of Okeechobee; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
