Helen G. Bryant
Helen G. Bryant, age 88, of Okeechobee, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Florida Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. Born Dec. 24, 1912, in Terre Haute, Ind., Ms. Bryant had came to Okeechobee from Fort Lauderdale in 1954. She was a housewife by occupation.
She is survived by one son, Charles Bryant and one granddaughter, Jessica Bryant both of Okeechobee.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 6, from 9 until 10 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 10 a.m. at the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ralph Crowell officiating.
Interment will be in Dade Memorial Garden in Miami.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home.

Dale Burton Ireland
Dale Burton Ireland, age 92, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, May 29, 2003. Born March 11, 1911, in Vermillion, Ill., Mr. Ireland was the son of Franklin and Lora Gebhart Ireland. He was a bridge tender by trade in Jupiter.
Survivors include: his wife, Arlina Ireland of Okeechobee; daughter, Karen Miners of Sebring; two sons, Dale Ireland, Jr. and Roy Ireland both of Okeechobee; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois McNaughton and Blanche Morgan, both of Ft. Wayne, Ind.
There will be no visitation or funeral services.
All arrangements are entrusted to the loving care of the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Willie Hawes
Willie Hawes, age 69, of Okeechobee, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital. Born June 21, 1933, in Horry County, S.C., Mrs. Hawes grew up and attended schools in Tabor City, N.C. She relocated to Pompano Beach in 1957 where she lived until 1972, when she moved to Okeechobee. She enjoyed shopping, spending time with her family and travelling. Mrs. Hawes loved to work as a waitress and will be fondly remembered by the customers she served over the years at Hickory House Restaurant and Michael's Restaurant. Her cheerful voice and sunny smile will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hawes; two sisters, Bea Nelson and Louise Buffkin; and two brothers, Buddy Cooper and James Cooper.
Survivors include: her beloved sons, Randy (Kim) Hawes of Okeechobee and Mitch (Jean) Hawes of Vero Beach; three grandsons, Randy Hawes, Jr. of Orlando, Todd Hawes and Austin Hawes of Okeechobee; two granddaughters, Brandy Bobo of Vance, Ala. and Autumn Hawes of Okeechobee; one great-granddaughter, Alex Bobo of Vance, Ala.; and one great-grandson, Gage Hawes of Okeechobee.
Friends and family may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Thursday, June 5, from 4 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, June 6, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Dorothy C. Brown
Dorothy C. Brown, age 88, of Lakeport, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the Okeechobee Health Care Facility. Mrs. Brown was born Nov. 26, 1914, in Evanston, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry 'Buddy' Brown and son, Henry L. Brown, Jr.
Survivors include: her daughter-in-law, Wylene Brown of Quitman, Ga.; two grandchildren, Henry Lee Brown, III of Watauga, Texas, and Dina Lynn Tall of Flowermound, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Eden, Jacob and Lily Tall of Flowermound, Texas; and four step-grandchildren.
Visitation and funeral services will be held at the Buxton Funeral Home on Monday, June 2, at 4 p.m. with Rev. Coba Beasley, pastor of Maple Grove Baptist Church, officiating.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Marion "Glenn" Boyette
Marion "Glen" Boyette, age 74, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at the Veterans Hospital in West Palm Beach, after an extended illness. He was born in Denaud, and was a resident of Okeechobee for 11 years, previously coming from LaBelle and the Fort Pierce area. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 through 1949, serving his country overseas in Hawaii, Guam and the Philippines. While he was stationed in San Diego, Calif., he married Evelyn Kreeger and moved back to Florida, to the Fort Pierce area with daughters, Wanda and Beverly. Mr. Boyette was a heavy equipment operator and a pioneer in the establishment and completion of the Florida Turnpike, which originated in Miami and ended in Fort Pierce. He assisted in completing the dike surrounding Lake Okeechobee and was proficient as a dragline operator. He continued to work through out his senior years and was operating a grader for McArthur Dairy in Okeechobee until shortly before his illness. He was Commander in Chief of the V.F.W. Post #10100 in LaBelle and participated in numerous VFW sponsored events including Swamp Cabbage Festival Parades and activities. He was active in Little League and served as "coach" for many years. He raised thoroughbred horses in Okeechobee and took pride in owning a filly from the Kentucky Derby winner, "Secretariat".
Preceded in death by: his mother, Sallie Hadden of Moore Haven and his father, Asa Boyette of Bradenton.
Survivors include: daughters; Wanda Fay Poole of Fort Pierce, Beverly Ann Bustin of Port St. Lucie, step-son, Gary Carroll of Fort Myers, granddaughters; Michele Arthur of Port St. Lucie, Denise Hicks (Curtis) of LaBelle, Kimberly Poole of Hampstead, N.C., one grandson Christopher Arthur of North Vernon, Ind., four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. He leaves behind his long time friend, Evelyn Rayner of Port St. Lucie and his loving companion of the previous 10 years, Marlene Burnstein of Okeechobee.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2001, at 11 a.m., at Akin-Davis Funeral Home, in LaBelle.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Akin-Davis Funeral Home, LaBelle.

Charles Barney Crews
Charles Barney Crews, age 96, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Jacksonville. Born on November 14, 1907, in Henscratch, Florida, he had lived in Jacksonville for the past five years.
Survivors include: his wife, Wilma Cleo Crews; three sons; Elbert, Donald and Marshall Crews; two daughters; Fawn Stewart and Betty Ann Carr; sister, Cassie Allen and the grandchildren representing five generations.
Funeral services will be held at the graveside, Thursday, May 31, 2001, at 1 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lake Placid, with Reverend Bob Galentine officiating.
All arrangements under the direction and care of the Fraser Funeral Home in Jacksonville.

John Henry Pfennig, Sr.
John Henry Pfennig, Sr., age 88, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the William Hargrave Health Care Center in Haines City. Born on August 30, 1912, in Baltimore, Md., Mr. Pfennig was a Shop Foreman and affiliated with the Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Okeechobee Lodge #237 F&AM.
Survivors include: sons; John H. Pfennig, Jr. and wife Angie of Okeechobee, John Eugene Pfennig of Soddydaisy, Tenn.; daughter, Marian Pfennig Brown of Soddydaisy, Tenn, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation is on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home.
Funeral service is on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home, with Reverend Dr. Edward A Weiss, OSB of the Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church officiating.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

William Leon Tucker
William Leon Tucker, age 72, of Okeechobee, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. Born Oct. 2, 1928, in Russell Springs, Ky., Mr. Tucker had been a resident of Okeechobee for 22 years.
Survivors include: his wife of 15 years, Marion E. Tucker of Okeechobee; three sons, Leon Tucker, Steven Rucker and Richard Tucker all of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Esther True of Indianapolis, Ind. and Bonnie Mitchell of Cincinnati, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; and, nine great-grandchildren. In addition, he is also survived by four brothers, Kenneth Tucker of Fairfield, Ohio, Joseph Tucker of Franklin, Ind., Carl Tucker of Greenwood, Ind., and Carson Tucker of Whiteland, Ind.; and, four sisters, Maxine Bray and Lorene True of Whiteland, Ind., Nelda Grimes of Indianapolis, Ind. And Frances Burnett of Beech Grove, Ind.
Friends may call t the Buxton Funeral Home on Saturday, June 2, from 9 until 10 a.m. Funeral services will follow visitation at 10 a.m. with Rev. Dr. John Keith, Pastor of Oakview Baptist Church, officiating.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Curtis Alan Miners
Curtis Alan Miners, age 52, of Okeechobee, died in an accident on May 27, 2003. Born Nov. 14, 1950, in West Palm Beach to Curtis and Ruth Warren Miners and raised in Pahokee, attending school there until 1966. He graduated from Pine Crest School in Ft. Lauderdale and attended college at Athens University and University of Alabama. In 1973 he moved to Immokalee and ran the family grocery store for 23 years. Since September 1996, he and his wife, Helen, have owned and operated the Meat Shoppe in Okeechobee. Alan was an outdoorsman, airboat enthusiast, enjoyed traveling and was an avid fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide and Miami Dolphins.
Survivors include: parents, Curtis and Ruth Miners of LaBelle; wife, Helen Zimmerman Miners of Okeechobee; children, Starr Audette Miners of Ft. Myers Beach and son, Curtis Alan Miners, II, of Okeechobee; two brothers, Steve Miners of Immokalee and Jay Miners of Ft. Myers; and nephews, Jarred, Justin and Jeb Miners, as well as a multitude of friends from all over the country.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 30, from 10 until 11 a.m., with service to follow at Oakview Baptist Church, 677 S.W. 32 St., with Reverend Rhoden officiating.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy would be appreciated by the family in the form of donations to Martha's House, P.O. Box 727, Okeechobee, Fl. 34973, in Alan's name.
All arrangements are under the direction and loving care of the Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home.

Martha Sue Dodd
Martha Sue Dodd, age 56, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Okeechobee Health Care Facility. Born May 14, 1947, in Trumann, Ark., Mrs. Dodd had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1957.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Dodd.
Survivors include: one daughter, Cindy Davidson of Okeechobee; three grandchildren; one brother, Joe (Belva) Boyd of Okeechobee; and two sisters, Olivia (Clifford) Richardson of Trumann, Ark. and Patricia (Gene) Self of New Jacksonville, Tenn.
There will be no visitation. A private family memorial service will be held at Buxton Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Bishop, pastor of Fountain of Life Church, officiating.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

David Osborne
David Osborne, age 76, of Okeechobee and formerly of Stuart, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Okeechobee Health Care Facility. Born June 9, 1926, in Hanging Rock, Ohio, Mr. Osborne had been a resident of Okeechobee for 16 months. He was a Mason with the Masonic Lodge in Stuart.
He was preceded in death by a great grandson, Caleb Austin Nelson.
Survivors include: his beloved wife of over 56 years, Helen Osborne of Okeechobee; one son, Larry David Osborne of West Palm Beach; two daughters, Linda Diane King of St. Cloud and Lou Deborah (Chip) Branham of Okeechobee; three grandchildren, Brett David Osborne, Kim Branham Nelson and Chris Branham; three great-grandchildren; one brother, John C. Osborne of Miamitown, Ohio; and a host of nieces and nephews also survive him.
Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Thursday, May 29, from 5 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, May 30, at 10 a.m., with Reverend Eddie Lamb, pastor of Bethel Assembly of God, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Theodore B. Platt, Jr.
Theodore B. Platt, Jr., age 76, of Okeechobee, died, Monday, May 26, 2003, at his residence. Born and raised in Miami, Mr. Platt had been a resident of Okeechobee for eight years. He was a retired Chief Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Okeechobee Country Club.
Survivors include: his beloved wife of seven years, Margaret Platt of Okeechobee; son, Nathan Platt of Burknett, Texas; four stepdaughters, Sue Hatcher and Jackie Jurnigan of Wichita Falls, Texas, Marlene Meadows of Arlington, Texas and Patricia Petcoff of New Orleans; and his mother, Myrtle Friesner of Okeechobee, also survives him.
There will be no visitation or services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fl. 34973.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Weston "Monty" Ackman
Weston "Monty" Ackman, age 74, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital. Born April 3, 1929, in Washington, D.C., Mr. Ackman had been a resident of Okeechobee for 10 years. He enjoyed collecting trains and was an avid Washington Redskins fan.
Preceded in death by: his first wife, Jane Ackman; and second wife, Betty Cook Ackman.
Survivors include: daughter, Valerie L. Falco of Lake Worth; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Adair Hollaman and Ingrid Ackman, also survive him.
A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, May 30, at 6 p.m., at the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fl. 34973.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.

Twila Colleen Valentine
Twila Colleen Valentine, age 65, of Okeechobee, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital. Born September 5, 1937, in Newark, Ohio, Mrs. Valentine had been a resident of Okeechobee for 27 years. Twila will be greatly missed for her articles in the Okeechobee News and her role as the infamous "Okee Effie." She was a member of the Florida Press Association. Her hobbies included reading, writing, agriculture and the environment. A devout Catholic, she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mrs. Valentine was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Valentine.
Survivors include: her two daughters, Peggy (Raymond) Lyons of Fort Lauderdale and Marilyn (Tony) Pitzulo of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandsons, Patrick Hebb, Matthew Hebb and Jonathan Lyons of Fort Lauderdale, and James Pitzulo and Daniel Pitzulo of Indianapolis, Ind.; six granddaughters, Renee Pitzulo, Leslie Brewer, Amanda Brewer and Laramie Brewer of Indianapolis, Ind. and Kerri Lyons and Melissa Lyons of Fort Lauderdale; and seven great-grandchildren also survive her.
A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, May 31, 2003 at 10:30 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 701 S.W. Sixth Street in Okeechobee. Father Hugh Duffy will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the Buxton Funeral Home on Saturday, May 31, 2003 from 12:30 p.m. until funeral service time at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Okeechobee Educational Foundation at Okeechobee High School.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.
