Helen L. Meyer, age 76, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Raulerson Hospital.
Mrs. Meyer was born June 8, 1926, in Jefferson City, Mo. She had been a resident of Okeechobee for 13 years. She had formerly resided in Keen, N.H. from 1947 to 1976 and then the next 10 years in Charlotte, N.C. Her hobbies included painting, sewing, crafts and fishing.
She was preceded in death by her son, James.
Survivors include: her husband, Ben Meyer of Okeechobee; one son, Gerald (Dianne) Livsey of Swanzy, N.H.; one grandson, Christopher Livsey of Keene, N.H.; two granddaughters, Christine Livsey of Portsmouth, N.H. and Karen Williams of Charlotte, N.C.; one great-grandson, Benjaman Williams of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, James DeLong of Jefferson City, Mo.; and one sister, Dorothy (Harry) Kaufman of Okeechobee.
There will be no visitation or services.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.
Harold Sandar Skaggs
Harold Sandar (Sandy) Skaggs, age 58, of North Palm Beach, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.
Mr. Skaggs was born on Jan. 6, 1945, in Ashburn, Ga., son of Harold E. and Lillian Skaggs. Mr. Skaggs had been a resident of the Palm Beaches for the past 50 years, coming from Bellaire, Ohio. He was a designer drafter and construction inspector with Stanley Consultants of West Palm Beach. He will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include: his beloved wife of 24 years, Karen S. Joseph Skaggs; his children, Jordan Tab (Connie) Morgan of Sebastian, Tammy Kolar and Phillip of Fairmont, Ga., Traci (Doug) Hadden of Jensen Beach and Christopher, Shannon and Sabrina Skaggs; his mother, Lillian A. Skaggs of Okeechobee; his father and wife, Harold E. (Roseanne) Skaggs of Okeechobee; sister, Linda (John) Maheu of Okeechobee; granddaughters, Keri, Sara, Kelsi and Jennie; niece, Donna (Scott) Durand; nephew, John (Beth) Maheu, Jr.; great niece, Kasey; and great nephew, Marshall also survives him.
A memorial remembrance will be held on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m., at Taylor and Modeen Funeral Home, in Jupiter, with Pastor Adrian Rosa officiating.

Alfred Arthur Hertel
Alfred Arthur Hertel, age 70, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at his residence. He was a resident of Okeechobee since 1986. Mr. Hertel had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for 48 years as a long distance trucker and last worked as a captain for the security contract of Florida Power and Light. He enjoyed the Florida Keys, saltwater fishing, lobstering and golf.
Preceded in death by: his parents, Elizabeth and Arthur Scheller; brother, Howard Hertel; sister, Barbara Scheller.
Survivors include: his wife of 49 years, Helen; son, James Hertel; daughter, Barbara (Charles) Vandercook of Okeechobee; grandson, Jeffrey John Vandercook, a member of the 101st Airborne, making him third generation Army and stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga.; granddaughter, Sierra Lin Vandercook of Okeechobee; and sister, Margaret (George) Rainone of New Rochelle, N.Y.
A memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday, April 22, at 4 p.m., at the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fl. 34973.

Peter Jonathan Jones
Peter Jonathan Jones, age 37, died on Monday, April 14, 2003, in Lakeport.
A 10-year area resident, Mr. Jones was born on June 12, 1965, in Marathon. Formerly of Frederick, Md., Mr. Jones was a part owner and operator of an auto body repair shop. Locally, he was employed in the lawn service industry and commercial fishing.
Survivors include: his wife, Marshanne Jones; sister, Monica Segreti of Frederick, Md.; and mother, Magdalene Jones-Williams and her husband, Melvin, of Hobucken, N.C.
A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday, April 17, at 11 a.m., at the Maple Grove Baptist Church in Lakeport. Pastor Coba Beasley will be officiating.

Jeanne B. Swinford
Jeanne B. Swinford, age 92, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Okeechobee Health Facility. Born Sept. 3, 1908, in Illinois, Mrs. Swinford came to Okeechobee from Hollywood 19 years ago. She was a housewife by occupation, a member of the First Baptist Church of Okeechobee, and was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Paul K. Butcher and a grandson Charles Butcher.
Survivors include: her husband, Vernie Swinford of Okeechobee; son Jerry Butcher of Knightstown, Ind.; step daughter, Bette Levi of Decatur, Ind.; step sisters, Janet Rinaldo and Bernice Bird both of Okeechobee; step brother Walter N. Seaman of Williston; one grandchild; six great-grandchildren; one step granddaughter and her husband, Laura and Mark Frances Coni of La Porte, Ind.; and, three step great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 17, from 4 until service time at 6 p.m. at the Bass Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will be in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown, Ind.

Mary E. Childress
Mary E. Childress, age 84, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at the Okeechobee Health Care Facility. Born Oct. 28, 1916, in Oakland, Ill., Mrs. Childress had been a resident of Okeechobee for two years. She was a former lifetime resident of the Charleston, Ill. area and was a member of the Eastern Star in Ashmore, Ill.
Survivors include: her husband of 48 tears, R.M. Childress of Okeechobee; two sons, Daniel C. Boggs (Linda) of Okeechobee and James B. Boggs (Joanne) of Oscoe, Ill.; five grandchildren; and, six great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation or services.

William E. Sprigle
William E. Sprigle, age 82, of Okeechobee, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach.
Mr. Sprigle was born on July 11, 1920, in Brodbecks, Pa. He moved to Okeechobee from Akron, Ohio, in 1973. He was an auto mechanic by trade. Mr. Sprigle was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW 4415, Moose Lodge and Taylor Creek Bass Club. Mr. Sprigle was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include: three daughters, Terri Morgan of Akron, Ohio, Betty Jones of Lawton, Okla. and Cindy Mullins of Edinburgh, Ind.; three sons, Kenneth Sprigle of Okeechobee, Wayne Sprigle of New Carlton, Ohio and Roger Sprigle of Fort Lauderdale; one brother, Robert Sprigle of Hollywood; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 17, at 4 p.m., at the American Legion Hall. The American Legion will officiate.

Otis W. Byrd
Otis W. Byrd, age 70, of Okeechobee, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at his residence.
He was born on August 3, 1932, in Red Ash, Va. He had been a resident of Okeechobee for the past 16 years coming from Port St. Lucie. Prior to his retirement, he had been a boilermaker for Local #169 in Michigan for 40 years.
Survivors include: his wife of 54 years, Eula of Okeechobee; one son, George W. Byrd of Okeechobee; two daughters, Margie Lee Jones of Okeechobee and Robbie Baker of Port St. Lucie; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 16, at 10 a.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are under the direction of Aycock Funeral Home in Fort Pierce.
Charles "Chuck" E. Holloway
Charles "Chuck" E. Holloway, age 42, of Williston, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Nature Coast Regional Hospital in Williston, Florida.
Mr. Holloway was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. and moved to Williston over seven years ago from Okeechobee. He was employed by Aurora Dairy and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Preceded in death by a son, Eric Jackson Holloway.
Survivors include: his wife, Eunice Holloway of Bronson; son, Tony Stone; daughter, Roxanne Date; mother, Gloria Grant; brother, Andy Holloway; sister, Kellie Holloway, all of Okeechobee; and several nieces and nephews also survive him.
There were no services held.

Juanita Rathjen
Juanita Rathjen, age 85, of Buckhead Ridge died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Naples Community Hospital following a brief illness.
Preceded in death by her husband, Russell Rathjen in 1991.
Survivors include: her son, Richard Rathjen, his wife Sandy, and grandson, Lee, all of Naples; her sister, Betty Porth of Bettendorf, Iowa.
A private gathering of close friends and family will be at her home on Friday, April 13, 2001.

Margaret M. Wilkes
Margaret M. Wilkes, age 86, of Okeechobee, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Raulerson Hospital. Born on May 2, 1914, in N.J., Mrs. Wilkes was a homemaker.
Preceded in death by: her husband, Gerald Wilkes, Sr.; daughter, Madelyn Smith and son, Bill Quiris.
Survivors include:daughter, Mary Lou Thornton (Donald) of Okeechobee; son, Gerald Wilkes, Jr., (Jean) of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Jean Quiris of Calif.; sister, Jean Pangan of Lancaster, Calif.; nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; niece, Bonnie Hock of Calif., and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation is Friday, April 13, from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.
Funeral service is Friday, April 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Bass Funeral Home Chapel.

Thelma B. Chapman
Thelma B. Chapman, age 84, of Okeechobee and formerly Florida Gardens in Lake Worth, died on Monday, April 7, 2003.
Mrs. Chapman was born on July 9, 1918.
Survivors include: her daughter, Nancy (Bill) Busbee of Okeechobee; her son, Ernest W. Chapman, Sr. of Okeechobee; grandchildren, Ernest W. Chapman, Jr. of Okeechobee, Melissa Boodaghian of Davie, Daniel C. Hawn of West Palm Beach, Bill Hawn of Orlando, April Thornton and Brandy Busbee of West Palm Beach; sister, Nine Hartman of N.J.; brother, Elsworth Bradford of Colo.; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 14, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Dorsey-E. Earl Smith Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 3041 Kirk Road, in Lake Worth.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m.
Internment will follow immediately at Lake Worth Memory Gardens Cemetery.
