Rita Bowles
Rita Bowles, age 83, of Okeechobee, died Dec. 28, 2002, in Sage Township, Mich.
Mrs. Bowles was a resident of Okeechobee for 23 years and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by daughters, Ramona and Rita; brothers, Eddie, Patrick, James and Lawrence; and sister, Kathryn.
Survivors include: two brothers, Stephen (Grace) Burke of Dearborn, Mich., and Thomas (Donna) Burke of St. Claire, Mich.; two sisters, Agnes (Marion) Woolsey of New Castle, Ind., and Marie Colbert of Okeechobee; and several nieces and nephews also survive her.
Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, from 9 a.m., until 10:30 a.m. The Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment following at Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.
Robert E. Abner
Robert E. Abner, age 75, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Lawnwood Medical Center in Ft. Pierce.
Mr. Abner was born March 19, 1927, in Germantown, Ohio and was a resident of Okeechobee for 20 years. He also served in the U. S. Navy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Rena Abner.
Survivors include: his wife of 54 years, Marie; one daughter, Vicki (Walter) LaMance of Monroe, Ohio; one grandson, Matthew LaMance of Monroe, Ohio; one granddaughter, Kristen LaMance of Middletown, Ohio; one brother, William (Phyllis) Abner of Germantown, Ohio; and two sisters, Ethel Pence of Naples and Diane Pieratt of Middletown, Ohio.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.
Bettie E. Nix
Bettie E. Nix, age 77, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Nix was born on Oct. 24, 1925, in Parkersburg, W. Va., she had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1945 and was well known as a cashier for Winn-Dixie. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: her devoted husband of 58 years, Herbert E. Nix of Okeechobee; daughter, Lynda Sue (Stan) Bass of Okeechobee; and grandson, Michael B. (Lori) Edwards of Okeechobee also survives her.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, from 4 until 6 p.m., at the Buxton Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m., at the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel, with Bob Carden, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
All arrangements have been under the direction of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.
Walter Marion Quarles
Walter Marion Quarles, age 61, of St. Petersburg, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute in St. Petersburg.
Mr. Quarles was born on Jan. 20, 1941, in Okeechobee, the son of Clifford and Ruth Quarles, he had formerly resided in Okeechobee for 50 years.
Survivors include: one brother, Marvin Quarles of Okeechobee; and two sisters, Glenda Waters of Okeechobee and Nancy Story of Fort Pierce also survive him.
There will be no visitation or services.
All arrangements have been under the direction and care of the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.
David Earl Alexander
David Earl Alexander, age 77, of Okeechobee, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Alexander was born on June 5, 1925, in Dawson Springs, Ky. Mr. Alexander had been a resident of Okeechobee for five years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Dearborn, Mich. and the Masonic Lodge in Redford, Mich.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 34 years, Lois E. Alexander of Okeechobee; three sons, Bobby Alexander of Roscommon, Mich., Ralph Alexander of Westland, Mich. and Larry Alexander of Winslow, Ind.; one daughter, Kathy Tisdale of Petersburg, Ind.; stepdaughters, Kay E. Jackson of Troy, Mich., Becky S. Thompkins of Jupiter and Robin A. Bosak of Libonia, Mich.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren also survive him.
There will be no visitation or services.

Jo Peterson
Jo Peterson, 63, of Fort Pierce, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002. Mrs. Peterson was born in Fort Pierce on Oct. 29, 1939, the daughter of Frank Waldrop Sr., and Julia Green Waldrop. Mrs. Peterson has been a life long resident of Fort Pierce and a long time employee of Best Choice Meats. She was affectionately known as "Ma" and "Nana." Mrs. Peterson enjoyed baking cookies, making candy and giving them away to family, friends and strangers. She attended Common Ground Vineyard Church of Fort Pierce.
Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Ed Peterson.
Survivors include: her son, Steven (Yvonne) R. Brown; two daughters, Kathy (Gary) Rein and Herkey (Kerry) Farmer, all of Fort Pierce; 10 grandchildren, Patty Davis, Shelly Lamendola, Boogie Brown, Genifer Dial, Brandy LeBanc, Hoss Perry, Kim Perry, Eddie Peterson, Erica Waldron and Peyton Farmer; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Frank (Elsa) Waldrop.
Friends may call on Friday, Jan. 3, from 4 until 7 p.m., at Yates Funeral Home in Fort Pierce.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 10 a.m., at Yates Funeral Home with Reverend Malcolm Carter officiating.
Interment will follow in White City Cemetery.

Robert Clark Marshall
Robert Clark Marshall, age 78, of Buckhead Ridge in Okeechobee, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach.
Mr. Marshall was born on May 7, 1924, in Raleigh, N.C. Mr. Marshall had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1989. He graduated from Hampton High School in Virginia in 1943, after which he immediately entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Marshall reached the rank of Electrician Mate 1st Class aboard ship, received a letter of commendation from the U.S. President and his commanding officer and was honorably discharged in Bremerton, Wash. He was a master electrician and successfully developed an electrical contracting company in Washington, D.C. when he was 22 years old. He was a life member of the NRA and the Kiwanis Club. Mr. Marshall's hobbies included golf, traveling in his airplane and boat and target shooting. He was a member of the Community Christian Church of Buckhead Ridge.
Survivors include: his wife, Lenna Marshall of Okeechobee; two sons, Robert Marshall, Jr. of Bethesda, Md. and James Marshall of Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Nancy Thomas of Columbia, Md., Patricia Marshall of Olney, Md. and Lauren Donelly of Glen Burnie, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and two sisters, Harriet Galbraith of Onemo, Va. and Anne Huston of Lynchburg, Va.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 5, from 4 until 6 p.m., at the Buxton Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, Jan. 6, at 10 a.m., at the Buxton Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dave Robertson, Pastor of the Community Christian Church of Buckhead Ridge, officiating. Interment will be in Ortona Cemetery on Monday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m.

Lucian "Lew" Earl Wilson Zang
Lucian "Lew" Earl Wilson Zang, age 89, of Okeechobee, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at his residence after a 12-year battle with cancer.
Mr. Zang was born on Jan. 6, 1913, in Newport, Pa. He had been a resident of Okeechobee over 40 years. Mr. Zang was a member of the Okeechobee Eagles, Okeechobee Moose Lodge and had served as a former Lieutenant Governor at the Boynton Beach Moose Lodge. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his beloved family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Constancia Adelia Zang.
Survivors include: one son, Stanton Zang of West Palm Beach; one grandson, Howard Zang of Bon Aire, Ga.; three granddaughters, Carried Parker of Warner Robins, Ga., M. Lynn Lewis-Hooks of Okeechobee, and Aileda Zang of Bon Aire, Ga.; twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and two brothers, Paul Zang and Vernon Zang of New Bloomfield, Pa., also survive him.
There will be no visitation and private services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla. 34973.

Chester David Hetrick
Chester David Hetrick, age 90, of Okeechobee, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Hetrick, the son of John and Nora Hetrick, was born June 16, 1912, in Williamsburg, Pa., and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Philippines. Mr. Hetrick, was a barber for many years, during that time he lived in Kentucky and Illinois.
He was a resident of Okeechobee for 34 years and was the former owner of the Twin Pines Drive-In on North 441. He enjoyed hunting, horseback riding and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Glendine Hetrick of Okeechobee; two daughters, Kay (Jeffrey) Switzer of Escondido, Calif., and Virginia (Glenn) Simmons of Coral Springs; and two grandsons Robert Switzer and William David Switzer, both of Los Angeles, Calif., also survive him.
A memorial service officiated by Reverend Carmen Sollenberger, a close family friend, will be held at Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m. Preceding the service there will be an opportunity to visit with family members at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla. 34973, in the memory of Chester Hetrick will be gratefully appreciated.

Nineta A. Young
Nineta A. Young, age 73, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis.
Mrs. Young was born March 21, 1929, in Boston, Mass. She had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1984. A woman who loved dogs, she was also a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include: her devoted husband of 54 years, Eugene Young of Okeechobee; two sons, Earl Young of Okeechobee and Michael Young (Sandy) of Roscoe, Ill.; two daughters, Joy Jean Findley (Carl) of Dakota, Ill. and Linda Barriault (Bruce) of Okeechobee; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Frank Cascio of Riviera, Mass. also survives her.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Buxton Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m.

Herman Stafford
Herman Stafford, age 79, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Stafford was born April 23, 1923, in Smokey Valley, Ky. He had been a resident of Okeechobee for 20 years and was a member of the Moose and Eagles Club.
Survivors include: two sons, Alan Stafford (Lisa) of Kansas, Ala. and Paul Stafford (Charlotte) of Glen St. Mary; two granddaughters, Melena Bankovich (Don) of Flat Rock, Mich. and Stephanie Stafford of Kansas, Ala.; three grandsons, Michael Stafford of Flat Rock, Mich., Kyle Stafford and Alan Stafford, both of Kansas, Ala.; five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Torie, Jorden, Andrew and Shawn, all of Michigan; two brothers, John Farmer and James Talmage Stafford, both of Portsmouth, Ohio; and one sister, Dorothy Duncan of Mt. Prospect, Ill., also survives him.
Friends may call at the Buxton Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 5 until 7 p.m.
Funeral services will follow visitation at 7 p.m.
