R.C. 'Buddy' O'Dell, age 76, died May 9, 2004, in Jacksonville. He was born in Richwood, W.Va. to the late Blanche (Nutter) and Cobert O'Dell and lived in Richwood until his high school graduation. Mr. O'Dell was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and attended West Virginia University. He resided in the Stow area with his wife of 44 years, Marjorie. He worked for over 40 years at the Aerospace division of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. He loved sports and participated in many of the Goodyear sports leagues. He resided in Okeechobee since 1999 following his second marriage.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie (McMillion) O'Dell.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Jo (Holt) Hoover O'Dell of Okeechobee; daughter, Cindy (Dale) Holt of Stow, Ohio; sister, Merthyr Stauffer of Jacksonville; stepmother, Garnett O'Dell of Richwood, W.Va.; grandchildren, Ian and Olivia Holt; stepchildren, Penny (Bruce) Homer, Michael Hoover, Tommy (Lorraine) Hoover and Joey (Dawn) Hoover; 10 grandchildren; and, four great-grandchildren by marriage, all of Okeechobee.
Cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place at Stow Cemetery in Stow, Ohio. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 16, at the First Baptist Church of Okeechobee, at 2 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family in c/o Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Road, Stow, Ohio 44224.
Richard D. Bass, Sr.
Richard D. Bass, Sr., age 85, of Okeechobee died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at his home. Mr. Bass was born Oct. 10, 1918, in St. Cloud, to Tye and Maggie Bass.
Mr. Bass was in the U.S. Army for six years during WWII, and an electrical supervisor for the city of Ft. Pierce for more than 35 years. Mr. Bass was an avid outdoorsman and he loved animals.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Inez.
Survivors include: three daughters, Judy Bass Summerall, Essie Mae (John) Steen and Barbara Jean Mathis, all of Okeechobee; two sons, Glenn (Julie) Bass of Okeechobee and Richard (Donna) D. Bass, Jr. of Ft. Pierce; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and, two brothers, Bun (Cornell) Bass of Okeechobee and Kirby Bass of St. Cloud.
Visitation will be held at Bass Okeechobee Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, May 12, from 4 until 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 13, at 11 a.m., also at Bass Okeechobee Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at White City Cemetery in Fort Pierce.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Emanuel Church or Hospice of Okeechobee.

George Eugene Rix
George Eugene Rix, age 61, of Okeechobee, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Raulerson Hospital. Born Aug. 14, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., Mr. Rix had been a resident of Okeechobee for 31 years. He served as a Navy Medic assigned to the Marines. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include: his beloved companion, Ruth Gahn of Fort Pierce; three brothers, Ronald Rix of Virginia Beach, Va., Michael Rix of Chicago, Ill. and David Rix of Okeechobee; sister, Loretha Collins of Madison, Ga.; and, a host of nieces, nephews and close friends.
There will be no visitation or services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the South Florida Blood Bank or American Red Cross.

Margaret Smith
Margaret Smith, age 55, of Pahokee died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Glades Health Care Facility in Pahokee. Miss Smith was born Sept. 15, 1948, in Tennessee. She was a homemaker.
No services will be held.

Bennie Wendell White, Sr.
Bennie Wendell White, Sr. of Okeechobee died at the Hospice Unit in JFK Hospital in Atlantis, on Thursday, May 6, 2004. Mr. White was born June 27, 1940, in Alamo, Ga., to Earn and Lillie White. He came to Okeechobee from Sebring in 2003.
Mr. White was an exterminator for Rentokil Pest Control of Sebring for twenty years. He loved fishing, crossword puzzles and wrestling.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois Ann.
Survivors include: his daughter, Tammie (Edward) Collins of Okeechobee; his son, Bennie 'Buddy' (Sandy) W. White, Jr. of Sebring; three grandchildren, Ty Collins, Mary Ann White and Kimberly Ann White; one brother, Wayne (Betty) White of High Springs; and, one sister, Maxine Cummings of Mississippi.
Graveside services will be held Monday, May 17, at 1 p.m., at Pinecrest Cemetery in Sebring with Reverend Leroy Dobbs of McAlpin officiating.
Memorials may also be made to Hospice of JFK Hospital in Atlantis. Flowers will also be appreciated.

Dorthe M. Chilcutt
Dorthe M. Chilcutt, age 89, of Okeechobee, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 at Raulerson Hospital. Born Jan. 29, 1915 in Fond du Lac, Wis., Mrs. Chilcutt, formerly of Key West, had been a resident of Okeechobee since 1963. Holding a BS and MS in art education from the University of Wisconsin, Dorthe taught art in the Okeechobee County Public Schools until she retired in 1987. She continued to teach adult art classes for Indian River Community College. She was known, respected and loved by several generations of Okeechobee students as a caring and wise teacher. In addition, Dorthe was a world renown artist for her watercolors and other works of art. She was listed in Who's Who in American Education 1994, Who's Who in American Women 1995-96, and Who's Who in the World 1995-96. She had begun work toward a doctorate degree from the New York University and had traveled extensively in Europe on many painting trips.
The award-winning artist was a member of the Florida Water Colorist, the American Water Colorist, a charter member of the Key West Art Society, and the Ft. Pierce Art Gallery, now known as the Bennie Bachus Gallery. Additionally, she was a member of many other art associations and organizations throughout the state and country. Her passion for art and inspiring the appreciation of it to others, remained as one of her life's goals. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member and organist of the Christian Science Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Booth Chilcutt and five brothers.
Survivors include: four children: Booth (Peggy) Chilcutt, Jr., of Sumter, S.C., Karen (David) Hulett of Coral Springs, Cindy Underhill of Okeechobee and Debbie Flippo of Orlando; grandsons, Michael Chilcutt of Sumter, S.C., Jim Hulett of St. Petersburg, Peter Chilcutt of Sacramento, Calif., Ryan and Aaron Underhill, both of Okeechobee; granddaughters, Jennifer Hulett of Fort Lauderdale and Jenica Flippo of Orlando; great-grandson, Adian Chilcutt of Sacramento, Calif; great-granddaughters, Haylie Underhill of Okeechobee and Isabella Chilcutt of Sacramento, Calif; and, three sisters, Marion (Gene) Moran of Sister Bay, Wis., Gula Gillis of Rockledge and Heidi Hochtritt of Okeechobee.
The family will receive friends at Buxton Funeral Home in Okeechobee, on Saturday, May 8, from 2 p.m. until the ceremony at 4 p.m. to celebrate her life. In Dorthe's honor, many of her works of art will be on display for this celebration.

Lewis Lamar Collins
Lewis Lamar Collins, age 62, of Lakeport died Monday, May 03, 2004 at Raulerson Hospital. Mr. Collins was born June 2, 1941 in Lake Wales to James and Olavee Collins. Mr. Collins served our nation in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was the owner of Lakeport Groceries.
Survivors include: his mother, Olavee Collins of Lakeport; three sisters, Helen Platt of Lakeport, Annette Collins Deroche of California and Linda Collins Palmer of New Mexico; four brothers, James R. and Ronald Collins, both of Lake Wales, Dale Platt of Lakeport, and Buddy Platt of Lake City, S.C.; and, many other family members and friends.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday, May 6, at Maple Grove Baptist Church in Lakeport. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Friday, May 7, also at Maple Grove Baptist Church in Lakeport with Rev. George Randolph officiating. Interment will be at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

Steve G. Goings
Steve G. Goings, age 77, died Saturday, May l, 2004 in Palm Beach Gardens. Mr. Goings was born April 16, 1927 in Moultrie, Ga., to Chester and Evelyn Goings. He was a retired machinist with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. Mr. Goings came to Okeechobee from Palm Beach County in 1980. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Goings served our nation during World War II with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Okeechobee Lodge of Masons 237 F.A.M. and Valley of Lake Worth Scottish Rite.
Mr. Goings was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura O'Connell.
Survivors include: daughters, Beth Deuel of Lowell, Mass. and Linda Goings of Palm Beach Gardens; son-in-law, John (Lory) O'Connell of Okeechobee; grandson, Joshua Deuel of Lowell, Mass.; brothers, J.D. (Wylene) Goings of Moultrie, Ga. and Bill (Ellen) Goings of Okeechobee; and, sister, Wylean (Don) Casali of Louisville, Texas.
Memorial services for Mr. Goings will be 7 p.m., Thursday, May 6, at Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home.
