HOLBROOK, Gordon H., 80, of Zephyrhills, passed away April 18, 2002 at Hernando-Pasco Hospice Care Center, after a short illness. He was born on December 24, 1921, the son of Cleveland and Lois Tewksbury Holbrook, in Bath, Maine. He attended Morse High School and in 1942 joined the military during WWII. He was in the 3rd Division of the Marine Air Wing. He was a past member of the Lion's Club of Vinalhaven, a member of the VFW, and a lifetime member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1049. He was an avid reader especially enjoying history, an avid golfer in which he received many trophies in the Twilight Division, loved pets, especially his dogs and cats, and at age 69, became a student pilot. He was believed to have been the oldest student pilot in Maine and got his license at age 70.
He was predeceased by his father, mother, brother and sister.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Snow of Newport News, VA and Paulette Hanefeld of Hastings, NE; a sister, Marion Hebert of Phippsburg, ME; five grandchildren, Robin Curtis and William Snow of Brunswick, ME, Chad Collins and Stacy Johnston of Harpswell, ME, and Kevin Hanefield of Hastings, ME; four great grandchildren; close friend and caretaker, Brenda Lane of Zephyrhills; and former spouse and friend, Diane Taylor-
Moore.
There will be no service at Mr. Holbrook's request. Hodges Family Funeral Home is in charge of the cremation. Donations may be made to the Katherine Moore Scholarship Fund, Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, Maine.
Alfred Otto Kiefer, Sr.
Kiefer, Alfred Otto, Sr., 83, of San Antonio, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at home. Survivors include his wife Margaret; a son, Alfred Kiefer, Jr. of San Antonio; a daughter, Pam Abraham and her husband, Tony, of Dade City; a brother, Albert William Kiefer of Dade City; a sister, Loretta West of Albany, GA; six grandchildren, Jennifer Kiefer Maginness of Zephyrhills, Adam Joseph Kiefer of San Antonio, Charles Anthony Abraham and Andria Nichol Abraham, both of Dade City, and Rebekah Plazewski and Stephen Plazewski, both of San Antonio; and three step grandchildren, Megan, Melissa and Michael Kennedy. He was predeceased, in 1987, by his son, Albert Joseph Kiefer.
A native of Dunedin, he moved to Dade City in 1926 from Tampa. He attended St. Leo Preparatory School and graduated from Notre Dame School of Pharmacy in 1939. A Veteran of the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, he returned to Dade City in 1947 and was the manager of the Walgreen’s Pharmacy until 1953. He established Kiefer’s Pharmacy in 1953 where he made famous the “Nickel Cup of Coffee”. The Pharmacy remained open until 1994. He also established Kiefer’s Sporting Goods 1962-98 and Kiefer’s Village Jewels 1972-1997.
His accomplishments include Mayor of St. Leo; Bank of Pasco Board of Directors; First Union Pasco Area Advisory Board; Member, Kiwanis Club; Member, Rotary Club; Member of the Dade City Chamber of Commerce; Member of Downtown Mainstreet; Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus; and Member, “Old Timers Coffee Club”.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He enjoyed telling the story of how he was recruited at St. Anthony Grammar School to caddy for Gene Sarazen, a famous golfer of the era. He also would relate how he met his wife, Margaret in first grade at the Grammar School.
The family received friends at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19th, 2002, with a Wake Service held at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary. A Rite of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 20th, 2002 in the Parrish Center of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Monsignor Frank Mouch officiating Serving as pallbearers: Roy Hardy, Jack Vogel, Tommy Schrader, Herman Schrader, Lowell Harris and Barry Lynch. Honorary pallbearers were: Allen Treutel, Jim Tabb, Charles McIntosh, Lewis Abraham, Leo DeRosier, Bob Cabot, Terry Schrader, Teddy Schrader, Bob Bardin, Dr. Dan McBath, Dr. Carl Graves and Joe McClain.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Roy Hardy Benevolent Fund or Hernando-Pasco Hospice.
Jimmy Stephens
STEPHENS, Jimmy G., 70, of Kinard, FL, formerly of Dade City, died Sunday, April 14th, 2002 at home. A native of Cullman, AL, he moved to Dade City in 1947 and was a self employed brick mason. He moved to Kinard in 1992 and enjoyed both woodworking and gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Carolyn; a daughter, Sandra Bush of Dade City; two sons, Gregory Stephens of Wewahitchka, FL and Ronnie Stephens of Dade City; two sisters, Verna Smith of Brooksville and Dean Choney of Warner Robbins, GA; three brothers, Kenneth Stephens of Deland, FL, J.D. Stephens of Ellijay, GA and Gary Stephens of Treasure Island, FL; and two grandchildren, Marie Bush of Dade City and Amy Stephens of Wewahitchka.
A memorial service was held in the chapel of Hodges Family Funeral Home on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. with Jimmy Johnson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Covenant Hospice, 4349 Lafayette St. Marianna, FL 32446
Virginia McCullough
Virginia McCullough, 78, of Dade City, died Sunday, April 14th, 2002 at Hernando-Pasco Care Center in Dade City. A Florida Native, she was a long time resident of this area. A member of the First Baptist Church of Dade City, she was employed at Kiefer's Drug Store, Winn-Dixie, and from 1975-95, she was the owner/operator of Ginger's Day Care in Dade City. She and "Poppa Mac" were loved by all her children and she will be greatly missed.
Survivors include a son, Blane McCullough of Dade City; a brother, Walter Peeples of Denver, CO; a sister, Gretchen Wedge of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Mac, and a daughter, Toni Dawn.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2002. Funeral Services were held in the Chapel of Hodges Family Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 18th, 2002. Burial followed at Chapel Hill Gardens.
In lieu of lowers, donations may be made in her name to Hernando-Pasco Hospice.
Francis Joseph Hughes
HUGHES, Francis, 78, of Dade City, died April 10, 2002 at Pasco Regional Medical Center. A winter visitor, he was a Michigan native and a Veteran of the US Navy during WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; and loving family.
Wyatt E. Smith
Wyatt E. Smith, 90, of Dade City, died Monday, April 8th, 2002 at Hernando-Pasco Hospice House in Dade City. A native of Charlotte, NC he moved to Dade City in 1995 and was a resident of the Edwinola. He was employed for 43 years by the Duke Power Company and retired in 1976 as an office manager.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Jones of Dade City; a son, Shuford Smith and his wife, Mary Helen, of Tryon, NC; three grandchildren, Cassandra Kennedy and her husband, Patrick, of Charlotte, NC, Scott Jones and his wife, Kelly, of Eugene, OR and Lara Tibbals and her husband, Wesley, of Tampa; and one great grandchild, Ryan Kennedy of Charlotte.
A memorial service was held at the Edwinola on Friday, April 12, 2002 at 3:30 p.m. with Father Lewis Tanno officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hernando-Pasco Hospice or St. Mary's Episcopal Church.

Dennis Houghtalin
HOUGHTALIN, Dennis, 44, of Dade City, died Saturday, July 27, 2002 at East Pasco Medical Center. A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., he moved to this area in 1991 from Apollo Beach. He was the Owner of Camouflage Inc. Painting and was Baptist.
Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Sandra; a son, George Houghtalin of Dade City; a daughter, Lisa Houghtalin of Dade City; two brothers, Kevin Houghtalin of Riverview and Chuck Houghtalin of Dade City; a brother, Jack and sisters Margaret and Sandy, all of Grand Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 6-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Services were held in the Chapel of Hodges Family Funeral Home on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Burial followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Nicholas Vella
VELLA, Nicholas, 24, of Dade City, died Friday, July 26, 2002 as a result of an automobile accident.
Survivors include his father, Joseph Vella of New Port Richey; his mother and stepfather, Angela and David Johns of Dade City; a brother, Joseph Vella of Columbus, Ohio; his maternal grandmother, Gloria Costarella of Dade City; his grandparents, Joan and Willy Minicozzi of Levittown, NY; his Godfather, Richard Costarella of Spring Hill; his Godmother, Debra Bathis of Farmingdale, NY; his Goddaughter, Victoria Callari of Spring Hill; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-8:00 p.m. on Sunday and from 3-5:00 p.m. and from 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday. Funeral Services were held in the Chapel of Hodges Family Funeral Home at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2002 with Father Patrick Rebel officiating.
