HOUSTON -- Mrs. Dora Saffold Newmons Leach of Houston, formerly of Auburndale, died of lung failure April 8, 2005, at Northwest Herrmann Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was 81.
Born in Willow on Dec. 30, 1923, Mrs. Saffold lived in Auburndale before moving to Houston. She was a homemaker and recently worked as a caregiver for Gurlen Home Care.
Mrs. Leach is survived by her sons, Lawrence Mathis, Lecanto, Philip Newmons, Houston; daughters, Nina Harrison, Winter Haven, Marlene Leh, Houston; sister, Bessie "Becky" Wagner, Winter Haven; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston.

WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Joseph M. Petote of Winter Haven died of heart failure Friday (April 22, 2005) at Palm Gardens. He was 77.
Born in Clarendon, N.Y., on June 4, 1927, Mr. Petote came to Winter Haven from Kendall, N.Y., in 1987. He retired from Eastman Kodak Company. He was a member of the Brockport Monroe Masonic Lodge. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the Hamlin VFW.
Mr. Petote is survived by his wife, Jean H. Petote; sons, Michael Petote, North Carolina, Daniel Petote, Rochester, N.Y., Phillip Petote, Mulberry; daughters, Renee Bertoni, Georgiana Fauci, both of Holley, N.Y., Crystal Ford, Kendall, N.Y., Berle Dale, Rochester, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 4620 Cypress Gardens Road, Winter Haven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, or the American Diabetes Association.

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Mr. James Carlisle Lucas of Valdosta, Ga., formerly of Lakeland, died of heart failure Friday (April 22, 2005) in Valdosta. He was 96.
Born in Waycross, Ga., on Sept. 14, 1908, Mr. Lucas lived in Lakeland before returning to Valdosta. He was a yard master for Seaboard Coastline for 30 years. He was a member of Cleveland Heights Golf Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Lucas was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Estelle Lang Lucas. He is survived by his daughters, Dorothy Harvey, Mary C. Culbreth, both of Valdosta; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.

ST. PETERSBURG -- Mr. Romeo "Brother" Walls of St. Petersburg, a native of Lakeland, died of lung failure April 16, 2005, at Northside Hospital and Tampa Bay Heart Institute in St. Petersburg. He was 51.
Born in Lakeland, he moved to St. Petersburg six years ago. He attended Tennessee State University, Florida Southern College, the University of South Florida and Polk Community College.
Mr. Walls is survived by his sister, Ernestine Campbell, Lakeland.
Services will be at 11 this morning at Pilgrim Rest Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

ALBERT SMART, 87

LAKE WALES -- Mr. Albert W. Smart of Lake Wales died of cancer Thursday (April 21, 2005) in Lake Wales. He was 87.
Born in Philadelphia on June 8, 1917, Mr. Smart came to Lake Wales from Hilton, N.Y., in 1993. He was a retired truck driver for Hipkins Motor Service in Philadelphia. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 242 in Lake Wales and the Saddlebag Men's Club. He was a member of Saddlebag Community Church.
Mr. Smart was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Smart. He is survived by his daughter, Florence Rankin, Long Beach Island, N.J.; sons, Albert W. Smart Jr., Pennsburg, Pa., Frederick David Smart, Apopka; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date at Saddlebag Community Church. Burial will be in Forrest Hills Cemetery in Moreland Township, Pa.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Doris R. Kelly of Lakeland died of heart disease Wednesday (April 20, 2005) at home. She was 85.
Born in Bushnell on Oct. 1, 1919, Mrs. Kelly lived in Sebring for many years before coming to Lakeland. She was a former member of the Highlands Regional Pink Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Clifton M. Kelly. She is survived by her son, W. James Kelly, Lakeland; daughters, Cynthia Sweat, Linda Vinesett, Melissa Kelly, all of Lakeland, Hilda Aparicio, Fort Lauderdale; sister, Mentholee Norfleet, Newberry; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel. Services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lakeland.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Helen F. Griffin of Lakeland died of heart failure Friday (April 22, 2005) at Hawthorne Inn in Lakeland. She was 93.
Born in Pulaski, Tenn., on April 18, 1912, Mrs. Griffin came to Lakeland at an early age. She was a bank vice president, retiring from Sun Bank after 30 years of service. She was a member of Medulla Baptist Church of Lakeland.
Mrs. Griffin was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer L. Griffin. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn G. Morrell, Lakeland; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.
