NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Mr. Roy L. Nelson Jr. of New Smyrna Beach, formerly of Lakeland, died Saturday (Aug. 13, 2005) in New Smyrna Beach of injuries suffered in an accident while working as a police officer. He was 36.
He was born May 26, 1969, in Lakeland, and graduated from Lakeland High School. He served with the Polk County Fire Department. He was a seven-year veteran with the New Smyrna Beach Police Department. He was a member of Coronado Community Methodist Church.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Angie; daughters, Samantha Steinmetz and Sabrina Nelson; brother, Robert, London, England; sister, Patricia Andress, Gainesville; father, Roy Nelson Sr., Lakeland; and mother, Susan Nelson, Lakeland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Roy Nelson Canine Memorial Fund, c/o Friends Bank 2222 State Road 44, New Smyrna Beach, 32168 or c/o Friends Bank, 1504 S. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater, 32132.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Coronado Community Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow in Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater.

Ralph Jones, 79, Mechanic
LAKELAND -- Mr. Ralph Eugene Jones, a mechanic for the city of Lakeland, died of heart failure Sunday (Aug. 14, 2005). He was 79.
He was born March 7, 1926, in Lakeland and attended Lakeland High School until he withdrew at the age of 17 to enlist in the Navy during World War II. He served four years in the Pacific.
After his enlistment ended, he returned to Lakeland and earned his GED and then re-enlisted months later for an additional two years of service in the military.
While his ship was docked in the harbor of New York City, he met his future wife in Greenwich Village.
"We knew each other for six months before we were married. The funny thing is, the day we married was the day he shipped out, " said his wife, Delores Jones.
After Mr. Jones' military service ended, the couple moved to Lakeland and their first daughter was born at Lakeland General Hospital.
The family moved to New York City in 1950 and stayed for 16 years. But the rising crime rate in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Canarsie became too much for the couple, and the family returned to Lakeland.
Mr. Jones worked as a mechanic for the city of Lakeland for 17 years.
He was a Baptist.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Dolores A. Jones; son Richard Jones, Lakeland; daughters, Sharon Wegener, St. Cloud, Minn., Donna Lee Peltz, Fairfield, Calif., Claudette Willis, Oxfordshire, England, and Cynthia Jones, St. Petersburg; sisters, Jacqueline Chamberlain, Georgie Law Sherman and Irene Jones, all of Lakeland; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lakeland Funeral Home with funeral services at 11 a.m.

JACK JANSEN, 78

VERO BEACH -- Mr. Jack A. Jansen of Vero Beach, formerly of Polk County, died of lung failure Sunday (Aug. 21, 2005). He was 78.
Born April 1, 1927, in Wichita, Kan., Mr. Jansen moved to the Vero Beach area in 1973 from Toluca, Mexico. He was a graduate of St. Johns Military School in Salina, Kan., and attended Wichita University for three years. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was a 51-year member of the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge 303 of Wichita, a member of American Legion Post 39 of Vero Beach. He worked in aircraft manufacturing and retired as president of Mooney Airplane Company of Kerrville, Texas. He was a member of First Church of God.
Mr. Jansen was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ross Jansen. He is survived by his wife, Sandra "Sandy" Jansen; daughter, Janis Jansen, Wichita, Kan.; stepdaughters, Lynn Paramore-Shaeffer, Ashland, Ohio, Shelly Angle, Mooresville, N.C.; stepsons, Kevin Paramore, Ashland, Tony Crumrine, West Palm Beach; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of God on 58th Avenue in Vero Beach.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Lillian Farrier died of heart failure Thursday (Aug. 18, 2005) in Lakeland. She was 91.
Born May 14, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she moved to Lake Wales 41 years ago. She and her husband owned and operated The Bicycle Shop in Lake Wales. She was a member of West Minister Presbyterian in Lakeland.
Mrs. Farrier was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Stanley Farrier. She is survived by her daughters, Anita Farrier, Lakeland, and Alice Brooks, California; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

LAKELAND -- Mr. Edward Miles Brown of Lakeland died of heart failure Aug. 18, 2005. He was 50.
He was born in Wauchula on Jan. 20, 1955. He was an Army veteran. He was a member of True Holiness Church of Bowling Green.
Mr. Brown is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Irvin, Albuquerque, N.M., Artha Mae Holland, Queens, N.Y.; son, Justin Irvin, Tampa; mother, Louise Bryant Brown, Bowling Green; sisters, Martha Lucas, Elmont, N.Y., Lillie Mae Mobley, Mary Alice Tucker, Gloria Jean Brown, Linda Brown, Natalie Brown, all of Bowling Green, Irene Bailey, Brooklyn, N.Y.; brother, Bennie Brown, Phoenix; two grandchildren.

WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Hazel S. Becton of Lake Wales died of respiratory failure Tuesday (Aug. 23, 2005) at Winter Haven Hospital. She was 78.
Born April 12, 1927, in Bartow, Mrs. Becton lived in Polk County her entire life. She owned the Rocking A B Ranch.
Mrs. Becton was a member of Golfview Baptist Church and the Florida Cattleman's Association.
Mrs. Becton's husband, Alex, preceded her in death in 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Garrett, Lake Wales; sons, Don Becton, Mayo, Ron Becton, Fort Pierce, Danny Becton, Lake Wales; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Lake Wales Cemetery.
