PLANT CITY -- Ms. Mary Jean McCann of Plant City died of cancer Sunday (Aug. 21, 2005) in Plant City. She was 66.

Born May 29, 1939, in Boston, she came here from Boston in 1988. She was a homemaker. She attended St. Clement Catholic Church.

Mrs. McCann is survived by her husband, John McCann Sr.; son, John J. McCann Jr., Cresskill, N.J.; daughters, Tracey Collins and Stephanie Doyle, both of Plant City; brothers, Emilio Scapicchio, Boston, Robert Scapicchio, Medford, Mass., Sebastian Scapicchio, Medford, Mass., and Peter Scapicchio, Medford, Mass.; sisters, Dorothy Scapicchio, Lydia Scapicchio, and Connie Scapicchio, all of Medford, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at St. Clement Catholic Church. Services will follow the visitation.

LILLIAN DRISKELL, 96
Homemaker

MELBOURNE -- Mrs. Lillian Lamb Driskell of Fort Meade died of natural causes Sunday (Aug. 21, 2005) in Melbourne. She was 96.

She was born Jan. 15, 1909, in Fort Meade. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Cornerstone Church of God for 81 years.

Mrs. Driskell is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dudley Driskell. She is survived by her son, Brent Driskell, Fort Meade; daughter, Brenda Harris, Melbourne; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McLean Funeral Home, Fort Meade. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Cornerstone Church of God, Fort Meade. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

HOWARD SMITH, 84

Manager

HAINES CITY -- Mr. Howard Towles Smith of Haines City died of cardiac arrest Friday (Aug. 19, 2005). He was 84.

Born Aug. 13, 1921, in Baltimore, Md., Mr. Smith moved to Haines City 39 years ago. He served in the Army in World War II. He worked for Neisner's Brothers as a manager.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Gloria S. Smith; sons, David Smith, Dundee, Stuart Smith, Brooksville; daughter, Sloan Bartlett, Orlando; six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Winter Haven.

RUTH FLEMING, 88

WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Fleming of Winter Haven died of heart failure Wednesday (Aug. 17, 2005) at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale. She was 88.

She was born in Borden, Ind., and came to Polk County in 1955 from Martinsburg, Ind. She attended Christian Heritage Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garth Wayne Fleming, and sons, Ronald W. Fleming, Norman Claude Fleming and Shannon Ray Fleming.

She is survived by her son, James Dewayne Fleming, Raiford, six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Auburndale Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christian Heritage Baptist Church, 150 Spirit Lake Road, Winter Haven, 33881.

L. MERLIN COATES, 90

Mueller Manufacturing

LAKELAND -- Mr. L. Merlin Coates of Lakeland died of heart failure Wednesday (Aug. 17, 2005) at Florida Presbyterian Homes. He was 90.

He was born May 3, 1915, in Marion County, Ill., and came here from Winter Haven 17 years ago. He was vice president of Mueller Manufacturing Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Coates is survived by his wife, Evelyn Coates; sons, Ronald Coates, Williamston, Mich., Keith Coates, Lakeland; daughters, Joyce Lyon, North Chili, N.Y.; sisters, Norma Schein, Carlinville, Ill., Lorene Groves, Greenville, Ill., Roberta Young, Greenville, Ill., and Phoebe Delamarter, Louisville, Ky.; brothers, Herbert Coates, Greenville, Ill., and Robert Coates, Plant City; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Florida Presbyterian Homes Chapel.

ALAN BEARD, 53

Computer Consultant

LAKELAND -- Mr. Alan Edward Beard of Lakeland died at home Aug. 1, 2005. The cause of death is pending a medical examiner's report. He was 53.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1951, in Greenville, S.C., and came here from Tampa eight years ago. He was a computer consultant. He sang with the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay and in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Beard is survived by his mother, Edith Beard, Tampa.

Memorials can be made to the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay Inc., 1918 W. Cass St., Tampa, FL 33606.

A funeral service will be held this morning at 11 at First Presbyterian Church with a reception following the service.

ALBERT WILSON, 60

LAKE PLACID -- Mr. Albert Lee Wilson Jr. of Lake Placid died from a blood clot Aug. 9, 2005, at Florida Hospital in Lake Placid. He was 60.

He was born Nov. 30, 1944, in Lake Placid and was a lifelong resident. He was a deacon of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. He was a gospel singer. He was self-employed.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Betty Wilson; daughters, Lisa Bellamy, Lake Placid, Yshika Wilson, Lake Placid, Amargo Crenshaw, Atlanta, and Rewanda Biggs, Orlando; sons, Anthony Allen, Lake Placid, Maurice Wilson, Lake Placid, and Albert Wilson, Sebring; mother, Annie Mae Wilson, Lake Placid; sisters, Beulah Mae Sholtz, Lake Placid, Mary Lou Wyche, Lake Alfred, Worthy Lee Wilson, Pitsburgh, and Wilma Jean Chisom, Lake Placid; brother, Calvin Wilson, Lake Placid, and 30 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Lake Placid. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
