WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Robert "Bob" Salomon of Winter Haven died of breast cancer Thursday (Aug. 25, 2005) at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale. He was 77.
Born in Gilman, Ill., on March 28, 1928, Mr. Salomon came to Winter Haven from there in 1966. He was the owner and operator of Lake Roy Motor Lodge Beach Resort for 20 years. He and his father owned H.F. Salomon and Son Texaco Service Station. He was a member of the Gilman Rotary Club and a volunteer for the Gilman Fire Department. He was a member of the Family Motor Coach Association. He was a Navy veteran. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council.
Mr. Salomon is survived by his wife, Joyce M. Salomon; sons, Mark Salomon, Tampa, Brad Salomon, Winter Haven; daughters, Ann Salomon-Collins, Melbourne, Jill Smith, Orlando; sister, Maxine Lehmann, Milford, Ill.; 10 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rolling Hills Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, Avery County Hospice, the Avery County Humane Society, or Polk County Humane Society.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Mary Eunice Peterson of Lakeland died of heart failure Wednesday (Aug. 24, 2005) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 96.
Born in Abbeville, Ala., on Sept. 9, 1908, Mrs. Peterson came to Lakeland from Willow Oak in 2004. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Willow Oak Baptist Church.
Mrs. Peterson is survived by her daughters, Thelma Croft, Willow Oak, Doris Watford, Valdosta, Ga.; brother, R.J. Vickers, Homeland; seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Willow Oak Baptist Church on Willow Oak Road. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Beatrice Mary Karolishyn of Lakeland died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Wednesday (Aug. 17, 2005) in Lakeland. She was 90.
She was born Oct. 28, 1914, in Dover, England, and came to Lakeland from Orlando in 1974. She was a member of many square-dancing clubs. She was a dental hygienist with the U.S. government. She was a Catholic.
Mrs. Karolishyn is survived by her husband, Metro Karolishyn; sons, James A. Osmond, South Hampton, England, and Julian R. Osmond, Stockport, England; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

DAVENPORT -- Mr. Derris Wayne "Pit" Hutson of Haines City died Sunday (Aug. 14, 2005) at Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Davenport. He was 23.
He was born March 8, 1982, in Fort Myers and came here from Fort Myers 23 years ago. He worked at the Knight Inn. He attended St. Mary's Primitive Baptist Church.
Mr. Hutson is survived by his son, Derria Hutson, Winter Haven; daughters, Keyona Lunsford Hutson, both of Kissimmee; father, Jimmie Kittles, Haines City; mother, Shirley Hutson, Haines City; sisters, Tequila Hutson, Haines City, Ebony Hutson, Haines City, and Shakita Hutson, Winter Haven; step-siblings, Betty Major, George, Jimmi and Connell Kittles, all of St. Augustine; grandparents, Parnell Kittles and Anna Simmons, St. Augustine, Andrew Benton, Haines City, and Lucille Lett, Davenport.
Visitation will be this evening from 5 to 9 at Holmes Funeral Home, Haines City. Funeral services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at St. Mary's Primitive Baptist Church, Haines City. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.

LAKELAND -- Mr. Oscar Hawthorne of Lakeland died Aug. 8 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center of a heart attack. He was 63.
He was born March 31, 1942, and came here from Winter Haven 15 years ago. He was a citrus worker. He was a Baptist.
Mr. Hawthorne is survived by his daughters, Velina Peterson, Valerie Foresyth and Sharon Boggan, all of Winter Haven; sons Samuel Hawthorne, Tommy Hawthorne and Reginald Johnson, all of Lake Wales; sisters, Ruby Hunt and Eula Malloy, both of Rochester, N.Y., Annie Seabrooks, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Era Singletary, Waverly; brother, Glen Hawthorne, Waverly; 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Church of God by Faith, 539 First Ave. in Waverly. Services will on Saturday at 2 p.m. at New Life Praise and Deliverance Ministries, 2101 Second St. N.E. in Winter Haven. Interment will be in Rolling Hills Cemetery.

ESCOLASTICO ROSA, 75

WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Escolastico Rosa of Winter Haven died of pneumonia Monday (Aug. 8, 2005) in Orlando. He was 75.
Born in Puerto Rico on Nov. 25, 1929, he came to Winter Haven from Miami in 1996. He was a salesman in the retail business. He was a Pentecostal.
Mr. Rosa is survived by his daughters, Eva Rosa, Elsa Morales, both of Texas, Sally Rosa, New Jersey; sons, Elvin Rosa, Texas, Edwardo Rosa, Fort Lauderdale, Edwin Rosa, Texas; brothers, Oscar Rosa, Kissimmee, Ramon Rosa, Miami; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 this morning at Rolling Hills Cemetery.

Lillie Whitfield, 70, Polk School Board
HAINES CITY -- Mrs. Lillie Mae Whitfield assumed a motherly role to countless children over the years as senior custodian for the Polk County School Board.
"If she caught somebody doing something wrong, she would always call them to the side and correct them, sort of like a mother. She would always kind of be like a watchperson for the kids, " said her son, Elvin Whitfield Jr. of Haines City.
"One thing about her, every time I saw her, I never saw her frowning. She was always giving encouraging words and always smiling. She seemed like a real happy-go-lucky person."
The retired senior custodian for Loughman Oaks Elementary School died of cancer Aug. 17, 2005, at Kindred Hospital in Tampa. She was 70.
The lifelong Haines City resident was born June 11, 1935. She attended Polk Community College.
Her career with the Polk County School Board began in the cafeteria at Oakland High School, which she graduated from. She later worked for Bethune Academy for many years before becoming senior custodian at Loughman Oaks Elementary, from which she retired in March.
"She was always willing to lend a helping hand and a word of encouragement whenever possible, " her son said. "My family has always extended outside the family and tried to help families in the community."
Mrs. Whitfield, who had a passion for playing the piano, thought that it was a God-sent talent and would tell her son, "I'm not the best, but I just love to bang on the piano."
She was a charter member of New Mount Zion M.B. Church, where she was a pianist.
Mrs. Whitfield was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Elvin Whitfield, in 1998. In addition to her son, she is survived by another son, Jarvis Whitfield, Haines City; daughter, Katrina Hollis, Miami; sister, Claretha Randall, Haines City; five grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Holmes Funeral Home, 601 Claude Holmes Sr. Ave., Haines City. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parkview Christian Center, 3520 Baker Dairy Road, Haines City. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
