WINTER HAVEN -- Memorial services for Mrs. Millred "Millie" Boucher of Winter Haven, who died Saturday (Aug. 27, 2005), will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church Chapel.

LILLIE PATTERSON, 99

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Lillie Bell Patterson of Lakeland died of heart failure Friday (Sept. 2, 2005). She was 99.

Born in Fort Valley, Ga., Mrs. Patterson moved to Lakeland from there 80 years ago. She attended Sixth Street Church of God.

Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Patterson. She is survived by her sons, Willie James Patterson, Eugene Patterson and Edward M. Patterson, all of Lakeland; sisters, Ossie Bee and Roberta Smith, both of Miami; 39 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Coney Funeral Parlor Chapel, Lakeland. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sixth Street Church of God.

PAUL COOPER, 80

G.E.

WILLOW OAK -- Mr. Paul Edward Cooper of Willow Oak died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Sunday (Aug. 28, 2005) at Savannah Cottage, Lakeland. He was 80.

Born July 27, 1925, in Gallipolis, Ohio, Mr. Cooper moved to Willow Oak from Lakeland 19 years ago. He served in the Army and fought in World War II. He worked as a telephone installation technician for G.E. He was Methodist.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife, Francis Cooper; son, Steven Edward Cooper, Lakeland; daughters, Rose Mary Shallenberger, Fairview, Pa., Rose Marie Canfield, Millcreek, Pa., Barbara Lee Cooper, Holiday; stepdaughter, Angela Ross Brown, Willow Oak; sisters, Pearl Trowe and Billie Kuhns, both of Avon Park; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at A.M. Seigler Funeral Home, Mulberry.

Oscar Collins, 60 Security Guard

LAKE WALES -- Mr. Oscar "Ed" Collins of Lake Wales worked side-by-side with his wife as a security guard.

Mr. Collins died of heart failure Saturday (Aug. 27, 2005). He was 60.

Born April 5, 1945, in Norton, Va., Mr. Collins moved to the Lake Wales and Winter Haven area as a child. He was Baptist.

Mr. Collins' wife, Linda L. Collins, said she was attracted to her husband's way of life.

"He just enjoyed life and liked to have a good time, " she said. Together they bowled, played pool and watched NASCAR races.

The two met while Mr. Collins worked as a cab driver. Shortly after they married they began working at Budd's Security Company, working shifts together guarding condos in Winter Haven.

"I'd never done anything like that. He was the one that got me into it, " she said.

At the office, Mr. Collins often left bouquets of flowers for his wife to find.

"He wouldn't tell you he loved you, but would do things to show you, " his wife said.

Mr. Collins is survived by his wife, Linda L. Collins; sons, Brian Edward Johnson, Lake Wales, Mark Anthony Hall, Alfa; stepsons, Dennis J. Albritton, Lake Wales, Charles Edward Teeter Jr., Lake Wales; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Marion Nelson Funeral Home, Lake Wales.

Donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale FL 33823.

Virginia Jackson, 81, Registered Nurse

NALCREST -- Mrs. Virginia C. Jackson became very involved in the Nalcrest community after moving there 22 years ago.

The homemaker and retired registered nurse died of heart failure Sunday (Aug. 28, 2005) at Life Care Center in Winter Haven. She was 81.

She was born on March 7, 1924, in Glen Cove, N.Y. After starting her family, Mrs. Jackson left her career as a registered nurse in pediatrics at a New York hospital to dedicate her time to raising her three children. After her children were older, she returned to nursing, working part time in private duty.

Mrs. Jackson, who came to Nalcrest from Mineola, N.Y., worked as a zone director in the community for several years, trying to help residents solve problems they might have.

"Each section has a zone director and they take care of about 30 or 40 apartments if they need any help or have any problems, " said said her husband of 58 years, George W. Jackson said.

Mrs. Jackson worked for the Polk County Supervisor of Elections for five years, working in Bartow and Nalcrest. Her husband described her as very energetic.

"They all liked her and they liked the way she worked, and they wanted her because they knew she was educated and could do the job, " George Jackson said.

Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Nalcrest Ladies Club. She enjoyed knitting and playing cards and Bingo. She also enjoyed going on cruises and traveling to places such as Las Vegas and Europe. She visited the Vatican and saw the Pope.

She attended the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Wales.

In addition to her husband, George Jackson, Mrs. Jackson is survived by her daughter, Donna Simpson, Glen Cove, N.Y.; sons, David Jackson, Urbana, Ill., and Donald Jackson, Carle Place, N.Y.; brother, Emmett Harlow Parsons, Bradenton; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Ruthie Jones, 73 Homemaker

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Ruthie Mae Jones of Lakeland, who will be remembered for her remarkable strength as a mother, died of cancer Friday (Sept. 9, 2005) at Lakeland Hills Center. She was 73.

Born in Ambrose, Ga., Mrs. Jones moved to Lakeland from Douglas, Ga., in 1948.

Over the last 10 years, Mrs. Jones suffered multiple heart attacks and strokes, said her son, Walter Jones Jr. of Lakeland. The will to live and watch her grandchildren grow up is what enabled her to live through these health problems, he said.

"She bounced right back from those. She never complained once, " he said.

Mrs. Jones cared for her family and stuck by their side with unwavering support.

"I used to get into a lot of trouble, " her son remembered. "Her door was always open."

She was a homemaker. She attended Mount Sinai Primitive Baptist Church.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Walter Jones Jr., Lakeland; daughter, Armanda Johnson, Lakeland; stepson, James Jones, Tallahassee; sisters, Mary Lee Oridge, Hampton, Va., Essie Mae Kirkland, Louise Smith, Pearlie Mae Clinton, Ella Mae Davenport and Virdell Baptiste, both of Lakeland; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Coney Funeral Parlor Chapel, Lakeland. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Sinai Primitive Baptist Church.
