LAKELAND -- Mrs. Zelma Bond of Lakeland died of heart failure Thursday (Sept. 22, 2005). She was 78.
Born in Evart, Mich., Mrs. Bond came to Lakeland from Gaylord, Mich., in 1986. She was a retired secretary. She was a volunteer for Lakeland Regional Medical Center and Mended Hearts. She was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church in Lakeland.
Mrs. Bond is survived by her husband, Norman H. Bond; son, Bryan H. Bond, Tokyo, Japan; sister, Helen Ballantyne, Loveland, Colo.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Rebecca Waldrop, 94, Schoolteacher
WINTER HAVEN -- Ms. Rebecca "Becky" Jane Waldrop lived a healthy life and stayed active into her 90s.
"She was on a treadmill every day until a year ago, " said her niece, May Kimbrell of Lakeland. "She was very in tune to keeping in shape and a very positive thinker. She worked out, she ate right and took very good care of herself."
Ms. Waldrop, a retired physical education teacher for Polk County schools, died of natural causes associated with old age Wednesday (Sept. 21, 2005) at home. She was 94.
She was born in the Panama Canal Zone on Oct. 24, 1910, and came to Winter Haven at the age of 2. She grew up near Lake Eloise and attended school in a one-room school house.
Ms. Waldrop graduated from Florida State University and received her master's degree in education from Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. She briefly left her career as a physical education teacher, which began in 1932, to serve as a physical therapist in the Army Medical Corps during World War II. After her discharge in March 1946 she resumed teaching and spent much of her career at Winter Haven High School, where she also coached tennis.
She retired from teaching in 1972.
"She had former students who went into teaching as a result of their experience with her as a teacher, " Kimbrell said. "She really cared about our society."
She had an appreciation for music and the arts. She learned to play the viola as a child and performed with the Imperial Symphony for 20 years. She also played in the Lakeland Symphony, Florida Camerata Orchestra, Polk Community College Little Symphony, and with the Winter Haven Messiah Association. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winter Haven.
In addition to her niece, May Kimbrell, Ms. Waldrop is survived by her great-nephew, Joseph Britt Williams, Lakeland.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at First Presbyterian Church in Winter Haven.

ODESSA LANDAHL, 74

WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Odessa June "Dessie" Landahl of Winter Haven died of heart failure Sunday (Sept. 4, 2005) at Tampa General Hospital. She was 74.
Born in North Georgetown, Ohio, Mrs. Landahl moved to Winter Haven from Akron, Ohio, in 1956. She worked as a nurse for Winter Haven Hospital. She attended Calvary Baptist Church, Winter Haven.
Mrs. Landahl is survived by her husband, Elton R. "Rusty" Landahl and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church, Winter Haven. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Calvary Baptist Church or Grace Baptist Church.

WINTER GARDEN -- Mrs. Anna A. Huggins Spell of Winter Garden, formerly of Winter Haven, died of kidney failure Saturday (Aug. 27, 2005) at Health Central Park Nursing Home in Winter Garden. She was 78.
Born in Holley, N.Y., on Dec. 12, 1926, she lived in Winter Haven before moving to Winter Garden 15 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a Catholic.
Mrs. Spell was preceded in death by her husband, McElroy Huggins. She is survived by her daughter, Rose Ann Riley, Winter Garden; sons, Paul David Huggins, Ronald C. Huggins, Mark Huggins, all of Dundee, Lewis Charles Huggins, Patrick Huggins, both of West Palm Beach, James Huggins, Ocala; sisters, Florence Passarall, Viola Starkeweather, both of Batavia, N.Y., Lucy Strollo, Port St. Lucie; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 this evening at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, 2425 West Havendale Blvd., Winter Haven. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Park.

BABSON PARK -- Mr. Fred H. Wilber of Babson Park died of heart failure Aug. 18, 2005, at home. He was 87.
Born in Scranton, Pa., on Sept. 21, 1917, he came to Babson Park from Chenango Bridge, N.Y. He was a retired truck driver for Swift and Co. in Hallstead. He was a member of Nimmonsburg United Methodist Church.
Mr. Wilber was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Thatcher Wilber. He is survived by his wife, Norma Wilber; daughters, Nina Pierson, Nicholson, Pa., Sandy Wilber Granick, Tunkhannock, Pa.; stepsons, Chris Withers, Richmond, Va., Mark Withers, California; brothers, Bill Wilber, Montrose, Pa., Stan Wilber, Philadelphia; sister, Ruth Brown, Great Bend, Pa.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Ella L. Smith of Winter Haven died of lung failure Saturday (Aug. 27, 2005) at Good Shepherd Hospice, Auburndale. She was 84.
Born Oct. 29, 1920, in North Carolina, Mrs. Smith moved to Winter Haven from there 14 years ago. She was a homemaker. She attended Salvation Army Church, Winter Haven.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Hubert O. Smith, Winter Haven.
