WINTER HAVEN -- While serving as pastor of Eloise Methodist Church, the Rev. Amos Troy Hatmaker of Bartow took a job teaching small appliance repair to help support his family and ended up teaching at Traviss Vo-Tech for 23 years.
The Rev. Hatmaker of Bartow died of heart failure Saturday (Dec. 24, 2005) at his daughter's home in Winter Haven. He was 78.
He was born April 1, 1927, in Bell County, Ky. He was in the Army from 1945 to 1947, serving in Germany.
He moved to Bartow from Tennessee in 1961 and began pastoring at Eloise Methodist Church the next year, while studying at Polk Community College and operating his own company, C & H Drywall. He spent his summers earning a bachelor's degree in religious studies at Emory University in Atlanta.
Eloise Methodist Church would never be financially supportive for the Rev. Hatmaker, his daughter, Diana Fay Douglas of Winter Haven, remembered. Though he could have moved to a larger congregation, he remained at the church until his death.
"(The Methodist Conference) mentioned moving him several times, " his daughter said. "He didn't care if it was financially gaining. He loved the church and the people."
In 1966, Mr. Hatmaker began teaching small appliance repair, an ability that came naturally to him, his daughter said.
Mr. Hatmaker was a member of the Masons for 45 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lee Hatmaker; daughters, Dianna Douglas, Winter Haven, and Suzy Hutcheson, Redmond, Ore.; son, David Hatmaker, Lynchburg, Va.; brothers, James Hatmaker, Bartow, and Burns Hatmaker, Lafollette, Tenn.; sisters, Vivian Scales, Winter Haven, Jo Ann McIntosh, Lake Alfred, Mary Ruth Bryant, Louisville, Ky., Kay Troup, Lafollette, and Oleen McCall, Winter Haven; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be this evening from 5 to 7 at Oakridge Funeral Home, Auburndale. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Hazel Nall Jordan of Lakeland died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Saturday (Dec. 24, 2005) at Savannah Court, Lakeland. She was 86.
Born Dec. 23, 1919, in Headland, Ala., Mrs. Jordan lived in this area her entire life. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church at the Mall.
Mrs. Jordan was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Jordan. She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne S. Brooks, Panama City, and Maggie J. Forlaw, Lakeland; sister, Annette N. Morkellos, Bradenton; four grandchildren; and three great-grand-children.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Heath Funeral Chapel, Lakeland. Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

ST. PETERSBURG -- Master Bradley I. Gray, son of Lesley Gray of St. Petersburg and Jeremy Wilcher of Lakeland, died Sunday (Nov. 27, 2005). He was 2 years old.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Patricia A. Bowman of Lakeland died of heart failure Tuesday (Oct. 18, 2005) in Lakeland. She was 64.
Born in Mystic, Iowa, on April 3, 1941, she came to Lakeland from Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1986. She was a real estate broker for ERA in Kalamazoo. She also worked for Watson Clinic. She was a member of Family Worship Center.
Mrs. Bowman is survived by her husband, William Bowman; father, Orval S. Glaspie, Lakeland; mother, Aileen Glaspie, Lakeland; daughter, Linda Francisco, Portage, Mich.; one grandchild.

AUBURNDALE -- Mr. William Winston Causey of Auburndale died of cancer Tuesday (Dec. 20, 2005) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 75.
Born in Hadley, Ky., on Oct. 8, 1930, he came to Auburndale from Arlington, Texas, in 1998. He was a graphic arts sales representative. He was a member of the Hamptons board of directors. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lakeland.
Mr. Causey is survived by his wife, Carole Causey; son, William Scott Causey, Arlington; daughter, Tracy Causey Sentz, Milford, Pa.; brothers, John Causey, Tennessee, J. Carl Causey, Texas; sisters, Mattilene Goss, Charlotte Meredith, both of Alabama; three grandchildren.

Norma Sargent, 77, Nurse
WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Norma L. Sargent, a retired licensed practical nurse, died of heart failure Wednesday (Dec. 21, 2005) in Winter Haven. She was 77.
"She did mostly home health care for terminal people, " said John R. Sargent, her husband of 57 years. "She felt comfortable at it. She had worked around people most of her life. She loved to talk, and she loved people."
She was born in Irwin, Pa., on Sept. 17, 1928. She and her husband came to Florida 20 years ago. They lived in Highland City before they moved to Winter Haven in 1991.
"She loved Florida, and her parents lived here, and we came here from Hazelton, Pa. After we lived up north, we wanted to get into God's country, and it is nice down here, " John Sargent said. He described her as a family-oriented lady who enjoyed reading and loved life.
She was a member of the Christian Bible Fellowship Church in Bowling Green and attended First Church of God in Winter Haven.
In addition to her husband, John R. Sargent, Mrs. Sargent is survived by her son, David P. Sargent, Bowling Green; daughters, Deborah F. Kressley, Emaus, Pa., Grace E. McKuch, Shellington, Pa.; sisters, Sarah Frey, Lakeland, Faye Dodds, Canton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Lakeland Funeral Home. Services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.
