LAKELAND -- Mr. Delbert Pigg, of Lakeland, died Tuesday (Jan. 31, 2006) of lung cancer. He was 77.
Born Jan. 2, 1929, in Big Hill, Ky., Mr. Pigg came to Lakeland from Hamden, Ohio in 1973.
He was retired from the Lykes Pasco Meat Packing Company and was a longtime vendor at Silvermoon Flea Market. He was a member of the NRA and Democratic National Committee.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a Protestant.
Mr. Pigg is survived by his wife, Annabelle Pigg; daughters, Robyn Weeks, Ruthann Polletier, Beth McGinnis, all of Lakeland; sons, Delbert Bradley Pigg, Hollywood, Wayne Pigg, Lakeland; sisters, Mary Alice Devlin, Miami, Willa Mae Shoemaker, Kettering, Ohio, Tracy Wilson, Stuart; brothers, Steven Pigg, Miamisburg, Ohio, William M. Pigg Jr., Dayton, Ohio, Leroy Pigg, La Follette, Tenn.; four grandchildren.
Visitation will be noon-2 p.m. Saturday at Lakeland Funeral Home Chapel.
Lillie Hart, 100, Citrus Industry
WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Lillie Mae Hart of Winter Haven, who moved to Florida to work in the citrus industry, died of respiratory failure Thursday (Dec. 22, 2005) at Winter Haven Hospital. She was 100.
Born July 4, 1905, in Gordon, Ala., Mrs. Hart moved to this area with her husband 66 years ago. Hoping to find work in the citrus industry, her husband took a job as a field foreman, and she became a sectionizer. She later worked as a retail salesperson.
In her later years, Mrs. Hart enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She often recounted stories of her childhood, growing up in Gordon, Ala. with no running water.
Her daughter, Edna Willis of Winter Haven, remembered her mother as an inspiration to her family and friends. She said her mother lived to be 100 because "that's what God intended for her."
"She was a good Christian, " Willis said. "She lived a good life."
Mrs. Hart attended First Missionary Baptist Church, Auburndale. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.T. Hart. She is survived by her daughter, Edna Willis, Winter Haven; son, Eddie G. Hart Sr., Panama City; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Missionary Baptist Church. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.

PAUL ALLEN, 91
Truck Driver
LAKELAND -- Mr. Paul David Allen of Lakeland died of heart failure Friday (Dec. 23, 2005) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 91.
Born in Eastman, Ga., on Aug. 3, 1914, he came to Lakeland from Mulberry a few months ago. He was a truck driver for Polk County. He was a Baptist.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Lora Allen; sons, Cleslie Allen, Mulberry, the Rev. Wayne Allen, Cross City; daughters, Lora Sharpe, Auburndale, Shirley Sattoff, Lakeland; sister, Helen Rogers, Orlando; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Seigler Funeral Home, Highway 60 E., Mulberry. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel.
Hubert Anderson, 89, Anderson's Grocery Store
MEDULLA -- Mr. Hubert M. Anderson worked closely with the citizens of Mulberry through his work on the Mulberry Police force and through Anderson's Grocery Store, a mom and pop grocery store that he and his wife owned and operated for a number of years.
"At one time, he knew everybody that lived in Mulberry, " his son, Max Anderson, of Puerto Rico said.
The lifelong resident of the area died of pancreatic cancer Thursday (Dec. 22, 2005) at home. He was 89.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1916, in Chicora and grew up on a farm there.
"He used to tell me he wasn't a cowboy, he was a cow hunter; a young teenager working with his dad on the farm and they would go out and hunt cows, " Max Anderson said.
Mr. Anderson served on the Florida Militia before he served with the Merchant Marines in World War II.
He moved to Mulberry from Chicora where he opened his grocery store that was located on East Canal Street in Mulberry, and he and his wife ran the business together for many years before selling it.
"My brother at one time worked for him at the store, and I worked there as a bag boy, " Max Anderson said.
Mr. Anderson joined the Mulberry Police Department, where he was a sergeant on the force. He later retired as a security guard for IMC.
Mr. Anderson had an interest in electronics and ham radios, and he was an experienced marksman. He also enjoyed fishing for freshwater bass.
He was a Christian.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Louise Anderson, in 2001.
In addition to his son, Max Anderson, he is survived by his sisters, Mabel Durrance, Medulla, Lucile McLaulin, Lawrenceville, Ga.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 this morning at Seigler Funeral Home, Highway 60 E., Mulberry. Services will follow at 10 at the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
DORIS DOWNS, 53
Polk Sheriff's Office Detective
LAKE ALFRED -- Ms. Doris Elaine "Dotty" Downs of Lake Alfred died Friday (Dec. 23, 2005) of cancer at Good Shepherd Hospice Facility. She was 53.
Ms. Downs was born in Winter Haven and worked with the Polk County Sheriff's Office for 25 years. She was a detective.
She attended Faith Baptist Church in Lake Alfred.
She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Hagood.
She is survived by her daughter, Courtney Hagood, Lake Alfred; mother, Corene Downs, Lake Alfred; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Kersey Funeral Home, Auburndale. Services will be at 10 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church in Auburndale.
