BABSON PARK -- Mr. Earle H. Miller of Babson Park died of heart failure Saturday (Aug. 14, 2004) at Lake Wales Medical Center. He was 88.
Born July 16, 1916, in Erwin, Tenn., Mr. Miller worked as a maintenance mechanic for Lake Wales Medical Center. He served as a naval petty officer for 27 years and was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. Mr. Miller was a member of the Kerbela Temple of Knoxville, Tenn., the Masonic Lodge of Erwin, Tenn., the Lake Wales Elks Lodge No. 1974.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Miller; daughter, Gaye Bryant, Mascott, Tenn.; son, William Earle Miller, Babson Park; six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Marion Nelson Funeral Home of Lake Wales. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Erwin, Tenn.

BABSON PARK -- Mrs. Hetty Jerome Browne Petersen of Babson Park died of heart failure Sunday (Aug. 8, 2004) at home. She was 94.
Born in New Jersey on Dec. 7, 1909, she lived in Lakeland and Highland Park before moving to Babson Park. She worked in radio promotions in Tallahassee, working with celebrities such as "Colonel" Tom Parker, who was an agent for Eddy Arnold and Elvis Presley. She later worked as a real estate saleswoman for Morris Jones and became the first woman real estate broker in the Lake Wales area when she opened her own brokerage, Hetty Petersen Realtor. She was instrumental in the development of the Lake Wales Arts Council and served on its board for numerous years. She was a publicity chairman for the Lake Wales arts shows. She was a member of the Lake Wales Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.
Mrs. Petersen was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Peterson. She is survived by her son, William Carson, Lake Wales; brothers, Col. Harvey Browne, Washington State, Tom Browne, North Carolina; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

PLANT CITY -- Mrs. Gertrude "Trudy" Wodach of Plant City died Sunday (Aug. 15, 2004) in Plant City. She was 79.

FORT MEADE -- Mrs. Darlene Loftin Johnson of Fort Meade died of heart failure Aug. 5, 2004, in Dallas. She was 53.
She was born in Fort Meade on Jan. 20, 1951. She was an administrative assistant for Publix. She was a member of St. Paul AME Church in Fort Meade.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughters, Patrice Hawkins, Miami, Phoebe Johnson, Winter Haven; son, Melvin Colvin, Fort Meade; sisters, Barbara Fisher, Miami, Yvonne Washington, Marva Grahm, Natasha Brown, Minnie Simmons, all of Fort Meade, Gwendolyn Sneed, North Carolina; brothers, Alvin Harvey Sr., Fort Meade, Ulysses Simmons, Plant City; four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home, Bartow. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul AME Church in Fort Meade.

PLANT CITY -- Mrs. Grace McCoy of Plant City died of lung failure Wednesday (Aug. 18, 2004) in Plant City. She was 86.
Born in Quitman, Ga., on June 29, 1918, Mrs. McCoy came to Plant City from Georgia 75 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of Oakwood Baptist Church.
Mrs. McCoy is survived by her husband, Elwood McCoy; son, Michael McCoy, Plant City; sisters, Betty Arnold, Zephyrhills, Lurine Johnson, Plant City; half sisters, Sue Westbrook, Brandon, Carolyn Miller, Faye Brown, all of Plant City; half brothers, C.W. Nelson, Texas, Daniel Nelson, Dover, Ray Nelson, Florida.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Haught Funeral Home, Plant City. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel.

HUDSON -- Mr. Steven L. Handley of Hudson died of heart failure Thursday (Aug. 12, 2004) at his home. He was 45.
Born Dec. 27, 1958, in Bartow, he came here from Mulberry three years ago. He was an operations manager for a soil thermal treatment company. He was a member of Seekers Forum. He was a Methodist.
Mr. Handley is survived his wife, Teresa Handley; sons, Jason Handley, Lakeland, Dwayne Martin, Hudson; daughters, Jamie Handley, Plant City, Deanna Martin, Hudson; father, Danny Handley, Lake Harris; sister, Debi Conedera, Mulberry; and one granddaughter.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Seigler Funeral Home, Mulberry.

LAKE WALES -- Mr. Mark James Slaton of Lake Wales died of cancer Tuesday (Aug. 10, 2004) at home. He was 35.
He was born in Lakeland on Dec. 1, 1968. He was a front desk clerk for Howard Johnson's in Fort Lauderdale.
Mr. Slaton is survived by his father, James D. Slaton, Lakeland; mother, Joyce M. Slaton, Lake Wales; twin brother, Matthew James Slaton, Tampa; sister, Sherry Connelly, Lake Wales; grandmother, Letha Slaton, Plant City.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Tina Lee Barnhill of Lakeland died of lung disease Sunday (Aug. 15, 2004) at home. She was 83.
Born in Bainbridge, Ga., on Oct. 24, 1920, she came to Lakeland from Manatee County 47 years ago. She was an inspector for Juice Bowl Canning in Lakeland. She was a member of Deliverance Tabernacle.
Mrs. Barnhill was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Barnhill. She is survived by her brothers, James E. Logue, Lakeland, the Rev. Gerald E. Logue, Plant City; sisters, Libby Keegan, Tampa, Retta Brock, Lakeland.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 E. Main St., Bartow. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow.

LAKE WALES -- Miss Jamaya Latrece Thomas, the daughter of Jimmie Thomas and Takia Sanchious of Lake Wales, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women in Orlando. She was an infant.
She was born in Orlando on July 22, 2004.
In addition to her parents, Miss Thomas is survived by her brother, Joshua Thomas, Lake Wales; grandparents, Jimmie Blocker, Queen Blocker and Minnie Thomas, all of Lake Wales; and great-grandmother, Edith Sanchious, Lake Wales.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 this morning at Lake Wales Cemetery.
