LAKELAND -- Mr. Alzire "Al" J. Veilleux of Lakeland died of cancer Friday (Aug. 20, 2004) at Tandem Health Care, Lakeland. He was 72.
Born Dec. 19, 1931, in St. Benoit, Quebec, he came here from Connecticut 21 years ago. He was a truck driver for Spector Freight in Farmington, Conn. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
Mr. Veilleux is survived by his wife, Alice Veilleux; daughters, Susan Macchiarella, Memphis, Tenn., Carol Giambelli, Raleigh, N.C., Joanne Neuman, Southington, Conn., Janice Brooks, Palm Beach Gardens; brother, Paul Veilleux, Lakeland; sisters, Theresa Deblois, Jeanne Veilleux, Lucie Veilleux and Celine Breton, all of Quebec, Canada; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Zona Long Bailbonds
CRYSTAL RIVER -- Mrs. Zona Long of Fort Meade died of complications from surgery Friday (Aug. 20, 2004) at Seven Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal River. She was 69.
Born May 10, 1935, she was a lifelong resident of Fort Meade. She was the owner of Zona Long Bailbonds. She was a volunteer for the Guardian ad Litum, a member of the Republican Election Committee and Unity Church. She was named Republican Lady of the Year and 1997 Entrepreneur of the Year.
Mrs. Long is survived by her daughters, Angela K. Long, Crystal River, and Iris L. Long, Sumter, S.C.; companion, John E. Dunn, Crystal River; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Lakeland Funeral Home Chapel and a memorial gathering will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Monday at the Bartow Civic Center.

WALESKA, Ga. -- Mrs. Stella Woodard Rutledge of Waleska, Ga., formerly of Polk County, died Tuesday (Aug. 17, 2004) at Canton Nursing Center in Georgia. She was 86.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Greenpond Cemetery in Polk County.

LAKELAND -- Ms. Charlotte Ruth "Sherry" Mitchell of Lakeland died of a heart attack Tuesday (Aug. 17, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 47.
Born in Winter Haven on Jan. 15, 1957, she was a lifelong resident of the area. A homemaker, she was a member of Christ Memorial Baptist Church of Lakeland.
Ms. Mitchell is survived by her sons, Thomas Dale Mitchell, Jonathan Edward Mitchell, both of Lakeland; daughter, Kathryn "Angel" Mitchell, Lakeland; companion, James Green, Lakeland; brothers, Gene Whittle, Wayne Overton, both of Lakeland; sister, Vickie Jo Overton, Auburndale; four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 this afternoon at Oak Grove Cemetery, Lake Alfred.

WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Rose Mary Stewart of Winter Haven died of heart failure Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at home. She was 58.
Born in Dyersburg, Tenn., on Aug. 19, 1946, she came to Winter Haven in 1958. She was a certified nurse's assistant. A Pentecostal, she was a member of God's Flaming Fire Tabernacle Church in Winter Haven.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by her husband, Henry Arnold Stewart; sons, Arnold "Red" Stewart, Jody Lee Stewart, both of Winter Haven; daughters, Belinda Jewel, Cindy Cox, both of Winter Haven; brothers, Sonny Sanderson, Jessy Hunt, Tony Hunt, all of Winter Haven, Tody Hunt, Missouri; sisters, Judy Vinson, Auburndale, Eula Jackson, Winter Haven; parents, Arlie and Virginia Hunt, Winter Haven; 11 grandchildren.

WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Willie Thomas of Winter Haven died of a heart attack Aug. 14, 2004, in Winter Haven. He was 67.
Born in Albany, Ga., on Sept. 23, 1936, he came to Winter Haven from Brooklyn, N.Y., 45 years ago. He was a citrus laborer.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his son, Bishop Anthony T. Lawrence, Sterling, Va.; daughter, Rosemary Stewart, Lakeland.
Services will be at 11 this morning at the Church of God by Faith, Palmetto Ave., Winter Haven.

JOHN KOSMIDER, 85

LAKE WALES -- Mr. John M. Kosmider of Lake Wales died of heart failure Sunday (Aug. 15, 2004). He was 85.
He was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Philadelphia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He was an assemblyman for General Motors for 35 years and a member of United Auto Workers Union Local 813. He was a Catholic.
Mr. Kosmider is survived by his wife, Katherine Kosmider, and stepson, Robert Brush, Lake Wales.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.

Rosa Jones, 98, Homemaker
LAKELAND -- Mrs. Rosa Bailey Jones led an active lifestyle until recently and attributed her longevity to helping others, good food, and using home remedies for sickness and wounds. "She didn't look at the carbs and preservatives like we do today. They just cooked food and ate it, " said her daughter, Umeki Precious Jones-Henry, of Lakeland.
"She was a great cook. She was like the person that everybody came to for turkey wings, sweet potato pie and crab cakes. She was a wonderful woman and good to everybody."
The lifelong Polk County resident died of natural causes Saturday (Aug. 14, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 98.
Born Nov. 23, 1905, in Fort Meade, Mrs. Jones was the second of eight children and grew up in the Fort Meade-Wauchula area. She moved to Lakeland 43 years ago.
She and her husband of 43 years, Ivan N. Jones, adopted their daughter when Mrs. Jones was 73. The devoted parents were familiar faces at their daughter's activities as a child. Mrs. Jones was a founding member and vice president of the Pinehurst Florist Club, which sent flowers to families who had lost a loved one and comforted family members. Club members also helped sick people.
Mrs. Jones enjoyed singing, visiting shut-ins and cooking.
"She loved to dress. My mother was a dresser, "Jones-Henry said. "She used to go to St. Simons Island in Georgia to pick out her clothes because she didn't want to dress like anybody else. She wanted something odd -- something unique. She was an incredible lady, "
She was an active 43-year member of New Bethel A.M.E. Church.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband; brother, Tommy Pitts, Dayton, Ohio; sister, Altamae Bailey, Wauchula; two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at New Bethel A.M.E. Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
