LAKELAND -- During the more than 40 years that the Rev. Charles W. McClelland served as a pastor, he spent 10 years as a missionary in Zimbabwe and 17 years in South Africa, as part of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board.
"It is such a beautiful country and beautiful people. It was just really a blessing, " his wife, Vertie McClelland, said.
The pastor at New Home Baptist Church in Lakeland died of heart failure Saturday (July 31, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 70.
The couple would have celebrated their 50th anniversary Sept. 4.
"Just this past week, we had a young lady from South Africa come and spend a few days with us, and that was a blessing because she was one of our first converts in Zimbabwe, " Vertie McClelland said. "My husband led her to the Lord."
Born in Eaton Park on Oct. 19, 1933, he attended high school in Tampa and Plant City and graduated from Lakeland High School.
Rev. McClelland received his bachelor's degree from Tennessee Temple College, and his bachelor of divinity and master of religious education degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
"While he was in college, he felt that the Lord was calling us into the mission field. We knew that we wanted to be foreign missionaries, " Vertie McClelland said.
Rev. McClelland served as pastor at Friendship Baptist Church in Bonsecour, Ala., for 21/2 years before the family went to Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.
"When he was in Africa, he hunted, " Vertie McClelland said. "They had assigned places that you could go to hunt.
"He shot kudus, zebras, wildebeests, impalas -- it was wonderful, very good eating, " she said. "We shared it with all of our African people and they just really liked it."
After serving in South Africa, the family came to Lakeland from Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1995.
Rev. McClelland served as an interim pastor at New Home Baptist Church until he was called to serve as full-time pastor last January, a title that he held beginning the first Sunday in February.
"He enjoyed preaching and working with the people, " Vertie McClelland said. "He felt it was a calling more than a job and thoroughly loved being around people and helping them.
"He was also a wonderful father and grandfather. His children were his life, " she said.
