BARTOW -- Mr. James E. "Jim" Kelly of Bartow died of lung failure Tuesday (Aug. 24, 2004) at Hospice at Grace Health Care in Lakeland. He was 76.
Born in Tampa on April 7, 1928, he came to Bartow from Tampa 56 years ago. He was a shop foreman for Florida Equipment in Bartow for 26 years. He was formerly employed with IMC Phosphate for many years. He was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church in Bartow.
Mr. Kelly was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Parker Kelly. He is survived by his daughters, Cindy Burns, Lakeland, Linda Glover, Chiefland; brother, S.D. Kelly Jr., Thonotosassa; sisters, Mildred Smith, Valrico, Marian Garcia, Plant City, Louise Kite, Inverness; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 E. Main St., Bartow. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow.
Marian Miller, 55, Polk General Hospital
BARTOW -- After traveling extensively with her husband while he was in the Army, Mrs. Marian E. Miller returned to her native Polk County.
Mrs. Miller, a housekeeper who loved to sew and make her own clothes, died of congestive heart failure Monday (Aug. 23, 2004) at Tandem Health Care in Lakeland. She was 55.
Born on July 21, 1949, she spent much of her childhood in the Fort Meade area. She and her husband lived in a number of places while he was in the Army.
"They were in Denver, Colorado, Tallahassee, and I think they stayed in Texas, " said her son, Glenn Miller II.
Mrs. Miller worked as a housekeeper for Polk General Hospital for many years.
"She loved to sew and make her own clothes. She went to school for sewing, " Glenn Miller II said. "She did it for personal gratification. She made clothes, costumes, you name it."
She was a member of Mount Gilboa Missionary Baptist Church in Bartow and attended St. Paul Baptist Church in Fort Meade.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, Glen Miller Sr.; daughter, Tammy Miller, Fort Myers; son, Errol Miller, Bartow; sisters, Mattie Fulse, New York, Donzella Carlton, Fort Meade, Katie, New York; brother, Larry Carlton, Waverly; five grandchildren; and two great grandchild.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home, Bartow. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul AME Church in Fort Meade.
HOWARD TALMADGE, 87

WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Howard Alonzo Talmadge of Winter Haven died of heart failure Tuesday (Aug. 24, 2004) in Winter Haven. He was 87.
Born in New Haven, Conn., on July 23, 1917, he came to Winter Haven from there 21 years ago. He was a naval architect in the marine industry.
Mr. Talmadge was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Martin Talmadge. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara T. Witham, W. Yarmouth, Mass.

WINSTON MILLER, 85

LAKELAND -- Mr. Winston Everett Miller of Lakeland died of congestive heart failure Monday (Aug. 23, 2004). He was 85.
Born in Fruitland, Idaho, on Oct. 10, 1918, he came to Lakeland from Akron, Ohio, 20 years ago. He worked in insurance. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Moose Lodge No. 945. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Presbyterian.
Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Miller. He is survived by his son, Winston Miller Jr., Lakeland; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 this evening at Lakeland Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.
MICHAEL KARLAK, 87

INDIAN LAKE ESTATES -- Mr. Michael John Karlak Jr. of Indian Lake Estates died of complications of Parkinson's disease Wednesday (Aug. 25, 2004) at Brandywyne Lakeside Center in Winter Haven. He was 87.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 5, 1917, she came to Indian Lake Estates from there 25 years ago. He was a retired police officer for the city of Cleveland. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Corps of Engineers in North Africa and Italy. He was a Catholic.
Mr. Karlak is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Karlak; sons, Ron Roharik, Brecksville, Ohio, Gerald Karlak, Westlake Village, Calif.; five grandchildren.
Services will be held in Garfield Heights, Ohio, under the direction of Golubski Deliberator Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

NAPLES -- Mr. James A. Kinsey of Naples, who has family in Lakeland, died Saturday (Aug. 21, 2004) at home. He was 41.
Born in Wilmington, Del., on Nov. 6, 1962, he moved to Naples from Miami four years ago. He was a chef.
Mr. Kinsey is survived by his parents, Gordon D. Kinsey Sr. and Evelyn K. Kinsey, Lakeland; brothers, Gordon D. Kinsey Jr., Swarthmore, Pa., Stephen P. Kinsey, Alexandria, Va., Kevin J. OHAMA, Neb. -- Mr. James Jimmy Crudup of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Winter Haven, died of cancer Saturday (Aug. 21, 2004) in Omaha. He was 51.
Born in Winter Haven on Oct. 8, 1952, he lived in Winter Haven before moving to Omaha, Neb., 30 years ago. He was a maintenance worker. He was an Army veteran. He was a member of Triumph Holiness Church in Omaha.
Mr. Crudup is survived by his wife, Sarah Crudup; sons, Eric and Karibu Crudup, both of Omaha; daughters, Jenny and Jane Crudup, both of Omaha; brothers, Joseph Charles, Joseph Jr., David, and Ellis Crudup, all of New Haven, Conn.; sisters, Marilyn Smothers, Winter Haven, Gloria Hubbard, Loria Brown, Joanna Crudup, and Petrenia Crudup, all of New Haven; six grandchildren.

MONTROSE, Colo. -- Mrs. Frances Horn of Montrose, Colo., formerly of Lakeland, died of cancer Sunday (Aug. 22, 2004) at the Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose. She was 85.
Born in Harrisville, Pa., on Jan. 22, 1919, she lived in Lakeland for more than 30 years before moving to Montrose three years ago. She worked in the credit departments at Sears and Zayres department stores. She was a member of Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. Horn was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald L. Campbell, Harry W. Bauer, and Thurston "Red" Horn. She is survived by her daughter, Carole Lee O'Donnell, Montrose, Colo.; sister, Nancy Bergman, Concord, Calif.; four grandsons; three great grandchildren.
