WAHNETA -- Mr. Gottlieb Otto Albrect of Wahneta died of cancer Thursday (Nov. 25, 2004) at his daughter's home in Avon Park. He was 86.
Born in St. Louis, Mr. Albrecht came to Wahneta at an early age. He was a truck driver, mechanic and welder.
Mr. Albrect is survived by his daughter, Sylvia Olgui, Avon Park; sons, George and John Wayne Albrecht, both of Wahneta, Albert Albrecht, Georgia, and Leroy Albrecht, Mulberry; siblings, Katherina Hunt, Marie Martin, Lester Albrecht and Arthur Freeman, all of Arkansas, Alfred Albrecht, Miami, Leona Duncan, Missouri, and Dewayne Freeman, Lake City; nine grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 this morning at Fountain Funeral Home, 507 U.S. 27 N., Avon Park. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel.
JOAN MANN, 61
Anchor House Ministry
HIGHLAND CITY -- Mrs. Joan A. Mann of Highland City died of complications of cancer Tuesday (Nov. 23, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 61.
Born in Tampa on Oct. 25, 1943, she came to Highland City at an early age. She was a counselor for Anchor House Ministry. She was a Christian.
Mrs. Mann is survived by her husband, Thomas Mann Sr.; sons, Thomas Mann Jr., Auburndale, Richard Mann, Georgetown; daughter, Sheila Honaker, Highland City; mother, Bessie Outlaw, Highland City; brother, Tayne Outlaw, North Carolina; sister, Alisha Pruitt, South Carolina; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Heath Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel.
Lillian Sanders, 81 Elementary Teacher
LAKELAND -- As an avid traveler, Mrs. Lillian Washington Sanders incorporated her life experiences into her first-grade classroom lessons.
The retired first-grade teacher for the Polk County School System died of respiratory failure Monday (Dec. 13, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 81.
"She tried to encourage kids to get out and see the different world. She always believed in that sort of thing, " her son, Elder Bruce Sanders of Mulberry said.
"That was one thing that she and my dad did -- always went on vacation someplace different to learn various things. She traveled in South America somewhere on her missionary trips and on her own, she traveled to Sweden, the Bahamas. She went to Spain one year, and she made two trips to Africa. She saw the world. That was her desire."
The lifelong Floridian was born in Newberry and grew up in Clearwater where she graduated from Pinellas High School in 1939. She received her bachelor's degree from Bethune Cookman College in 1951 and her master's degree from Florida A & M University in 1960.
She came to Lakeland from Clearwater 55 years ago, and began her 35-year career with the Polk County School District, teaching at Rochelle Elementary. Mrs. Sanders retired from Oscar Pope Elementary School.
"She loved educating people and seeing people grow up, " Sanders said.
She was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa teacher sorority. She was a member of the Bethel Chapter No. 27 Order of the Eastern Star and the Heroines of Jericho. She was a member of the Daughters of the Elks. She was a member of the Coleman Bush Boosters. She was a member of the Polk County Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and the Church Women United.
Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, John L. Sanders in 1991. In addition to her son, Elder Bruce Sanders, she is survived by her sisters, Altamesa Bryant, Clearwater, Dorothy Smith, Sarasota; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mark United Methodist Church. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St. James P.B. Church in Mulberry. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Raymon McGinnis, 83, Polk Schoolteacher
LAKELAND -- After retiring from the Air Force, Mr. Raymon L. McGinnis made use of his military skills as a teacher for the Polk County School System.
"He was a very strict military man but you follow his rules and everything goes smoothly and nicely, " said his daughter, Jane Gaertig of Lakeland.
"I've met several of his students years later and they all speak highly of him. He had letters of appreciation from some of them. They ended up doing well in college because he pushed them so hard in school."
The retired military veteran and teacher died of leukemia Tuesday (Nov. 30, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 83.
Born in Makanda, Ill., on Jan. 5, 1921, he served in the Air Force for 23 years and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Following his discharge, Mr. McGinnis came to Lakeland from Carbondale, Ill., in 1961 and enrolled at Florida Southern College where he obtained a bachelor's degree. He obtained a master's degree from the University of Florida.
Mr. McGinnis' career with the Polk County School System spanned 10 years as a fulltime employee. He taught business and math at Lakeland High School, math at Crystal Lake Junior High and math at Southwest Junior High. After retiring from the school system, he worked briefly as an insurance salesman for Met Life before he returned to teaching as a substitute teacher for several years.
"All the teachers wanted him, and all the students wanted him and all the principals wanted him. He kept the bad kids in line and the good kids moving along with their studying, " Gaertig said. "When he was subbing, he may as well have been full-time because he was always booked way in advance."
Mr. McGinnis was a member of the Reserve Officers' Association.
In addition to his daughter, Jane Gaertig, Mr. McGinnis is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gloria J. McGinnis; sons, Raymon L. McGinnis Jr., Snellville, Ga., Patrick B. McGinnis, Sunrise, and Mark E. McGinnis, Jacksonville; daughters, Amy Hale and Joanne Caccamisi, both of Lakeland, and Susan Cordell, Chandler, N.C.; sister, Kathlyn Strother, Santa Cruz, Calif.; brother, Gordon McGinnis, Anaheim, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Lakeland Funeral Home. Services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, or the Parkinson's Foundation.
BRIANNA ALFORD, Infant
LAKELAND -- Miss Brianna Nichole Alford, the daughter of Beau Alford and Joann Martinez of Lakeland, died Monday (Dec. 13, 2004) at home. She was one month and 18 days old.
She was born in Haines City on Oct. 25, 2004. She was a Catholic.
In addition to her parents, Miss Alford is survived by her maternal grandparents, Virginia and Enrique Martinez, Winter Haven; paternal grandmother, Vicki Alford, Lakeland.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 this evening at Crisp-Coon Funeral Chapel, Winter Haven. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Rolling Hills Cemetery.
KENNETH LUCAS, 72
Construction Worker
LAKELAND -- Mr. Kenneth W. Lucas of Lakeland died of heart and lung failure Tuesday (Dec. 14, 2004) at home. He was 72.
Born in Oswego, N.Y., on April 11, 1932, he came to Lakeland from there in 1989. He was a construction worker for the Construction Labor Local No. 214. He was a member of the Elks Club. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lakeland.
Mr. Lucas is survived by his wife, Barbara Lucas; daughter, Denise Newton; two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lakeland. A reception will follow at Foxwood Lake Estates Club House.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale.
