POLK CITY -- Mrs. Earlene P. Nuss of Polk City died of complications from Alzheimer's disease on Saturday (Dec. 18, 2004) at Good Shepherd Hospice Care Center. She was 75.
Born March 15, 1929, in Blount County, Ala., Mrs. Nuss came to Polk County from Arab, Ala., in 1955. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the North Florida Heights Baptist Church, Lakeland.
Mrs. Nuss is survived by her husband, Robert Nuss; daughters, Paulette Fennell, Polk City, Sally Chandler, Smyrna, Tenn.; sisters, Ruby Layton and Shirley Milligan, both of Lakeland, Linda Bolton and Nell Hughes, both of Auburndale; brothers, Alfred McLain and Ricky McLain, both of Lakeland, Micky McLain, Georgia; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home, Auburndale. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
EDGAR SHOLAR, 77

AUBURNDALE -- Mr. Edgar Sholar of Auburndale died of respiratory failure Sunday (Dec. 19, 2004) at Winter Haven Hospital. He was 77.
Born Dec. 28, 1926, in Duplin County, N.C., Mr. Sholar was a winter resident of this area for five years, coming from Indianapolis, Ind. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He was a dock supervisor. He was a member of Eagledale Baptist Church, Indianapolis.
Mr. Sholar is survived by his wife, Virginia D. Sholar; son, Ed Sholar, Indianapolis; daughters, Gloria Saligoe, Suwanee, Ga., Terri Chandler, Buford, Ga., Theresa Marsh, Westfield, Ind.; brothers, Alvin Sholar, Winston-Salem, N.C., Billy Ray Sholar, Rose Hill, N.C.; sisters, Lula Bonum, Rose Hill, N.C., Jenny Gore and Peggy Miller, both of Raleigh, N.C.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

BARTOW -- Mr. Gary E. Leach of Bartow died of respiratory disease Friday (Dec. 17, 2004) at Winter Haven Hospital. He was 66.
Born Jan. 1, 1938, in Mason City, Iowa, Mr. Leach came here from Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1956. He was a truck driver and part-time supervisor for IMC's Norlyn Mine, Bartow. He was Lutheran.
Mr. Leach is survived by his wife, Jean Leach; son, Gary L. Leach, Bartow; stepson, Dennis Parker, Eagle Lake; daughter, Debra Johns, Bartow; sister, Janice Molinsky, Clear Lake; six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday with a gathering from 1 to 2 p.m. at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home Chapel, Winter Haven.
Donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
GLADYS HELPHENSTINE, 67

MULBERRY -- Mrs. Gladys Allender Helphenstine of Mulberry died of cancer Wednesday (Dec. 15, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 67.
Born in Concord, Ark., on Oct. 17, 1937, Mrs. Helphenstine came to Polk County 35 years ago. She was a sectionizer for Donald Duck Citrus in Lake Wales. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. Helphenstine is survived by her husband, Bill Helphenstine; sons, Mike Wilson, Indianapolis, David Wilson, Winter Haven, Greg Wilson, Wildwood, Randy Wilson, Mulberry; stepdaughter, Rhonda Calhoun, Florida; stepsons, Billy Helphenstine, Kentucky, Donnie Helphenstine, Bristol; brothers, Glen Allender, Buchanan, Mich., Cecil Allender, Gerald Allender, both of Concord, Ark.; sisters, Elsie West, Sawyer, Mich., Ava Reynolds, Bartow, Linda Coulpit, Stevensville, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

MULBERRY -- Mrs. Gladys Allender Helphenstine of Mulberry died of cancer Wednesday (Dec. 15, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 67.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Gertrude Dayton, 88, Secretary
WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Gertrude Lasseigne Dayton of Winter Haven earned a degree from Polk Community College at the age of 50.
Mrs. Dayton died of heart failure Saturday (Dec. 18, 2004) at her home. She was 88.
Born April 29, 1916, in New Orleans, Mrs. Dayton moved to this area in 1950 after her husband was stationed at the Bartow Air Base during World War II.
Shortly after moving to the area, Mrs. Dayton became a secretary for the Florida Department of Agriculture, her son, Ted Lasseigne of Auburndale, said.
During that time she also worked on her associate of arts degree at Polk Community College, completing it at age 50.
"She had never had a degree, and she enjoyed the challenge, " her son said. "She was very proud."
After retiring at 62, Lasseigne said his mother enjoyed knitting, golfing and jokes.
"She always had a joke and enjoyed hearing them, " he said.
Mrs. Dayton also spent time with her grandchildren, shopping and having lunch.
"She was extremely pleased with her grandchildren, " Lasseigne said.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Dayton was preceded in death by her husbands, Howard Lasseigne and Delbert Dayton. In addition to her son, she is survived by her sister, Mildred Blazek, New Orleans; two granddaughters.
Visitation will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church, Winter Haven. Services will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church.

DUNDEE -- Mrs. Pamela Arlene Overstreet Miller of Dundee died of multiple organ failure Saturday (Dec. 18, 2004) at Lake Wales Medical Center. She was 40.
Born Nov. 13, 1964, in Winter Haven, she moved to Dundee from Winter Haven ten years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Rainbow Girls, Auburndale Assembly.
Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, Dennis Miller; mother, Mary Alice Overstreet, Auburndale; sister, Angela Sullivan, Fort Myers.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Marion Nelson Funeral Home, Lake Wales. Services will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
