LAKELAND -- Mr. Howard L. Gumerson of Lakeland died of complications of lung cancer Saturday (Dec. 18, 2004) at the Forsythe Center in Auburndale. He was 71.
Born in Indianapolis on Nov. 7, 1933, he came to Lakeland from there 30 years ago. He was director of litigation at Summit Consulting Inc., where he was employed for 19 years. He was also an insurance auditor for Met Life. He graduated from Michigan State University. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Gumerson is survived by his wife, Patti Gumerson; son, Scott Gumerson, Atlanta; daughters, Linda Bravard, Jacksonville, Elaine Fielding, Katy, Texas, Lori Carter, Monticello, Miss., Erika Koberlein, Naples, Angela Gray, Coral Springs; sister, Mary Ellen Grahn, Indianapolis; six grandsons.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Carylon "Catherine " Reed Green of Lakeland died of a heart attack Saturday (Dec. 17, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 68.
Born in Pavo, Ga., on Jan. 27, 1936, she came to Lakeland from Coolidge, Ga., more than 40 years ago. She was a retired educator and social worker. She was a member of Greater Refuge Church of Our Lord, and had been a Sunday school secretary, a diocese Sunday school secretary, a member of the Mother's Board and Choir No. 2, and the church bookstore manager.
Mrs. Green is survived by her daughters, Gloria Butler, Auburndale, Lillian Green, Lakeland; son, Robert Stanley, St. Petersburg; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Coney Funeral Parlor. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater Refuge Church of Our Lord.
NELL DAVIS, 89

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Mrs. Nell Barbara Wardlaw Davis of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Lake Wales, died of lung failure Saturday (Dec. 18, 2004) at Brookridge Baptist Retirement Community. She was 89.
Born in Oglethorpe, Ga., on July 18, 1915, she lived in Lake Wales for 50 years before moving to Winston-Salem. She worked in the claims department at Doug Bullard Insurance and in the billing department at Citrus World. She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Lake Wales and she was a member of Calvary Baptist in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Lee Davis Sr. She is survived by her daughter, B.J. Sauls, Winston-Salem; one grandson and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 this morning at Marion Nelson Funeral Home of Lake Wales. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Lake Wales Cemetery.

DAVENPORT -- Mr. Woodrow G. Beasley of Davenport died of kidney failure Sunday (Dec. 19, 2004) in Davenport. He was 72.
Born in Crensaw, Ala., on Aug. 1, 1932, he came to Davenport from there 55 years ago. He was a machine operator for OrangeCo. in Lake Hamilton for 37 years.
Mr. Beasley is survived by his wife, Wanda Beasley; sons, Gary Beasley, Union, Mich., Ronald A. Beasley, Haines City, Randall A. Beasley, Davenport; daughter, Cathy Beasley, Haines City; brothers, Joel Beasley, Hamilton, Ala., Charles Beasley, Brantley, Ala., Mark Beasley, Lake Hamilton, Royce "Pip" Beasley, Davenport; sisters, Doris Boggs, Cussete, Ga., Inez Compton, Brantley, Bessie Hall, Haines City, Shirley Enfinger, Arriton, Ala.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, 1001 Grace Ave., Haines City. Services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Davenport.
OLLIE BYRD, 80

LAKELAND -- Mr. Ollie Jackson Byrd of Lakeland died of heart failure Tuesday (Dec. 21, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 80.
Born Sept. 4, 1924, in Coffee County, Ala., he came here from Frostproof 45 years ago. He was a truck driver for Juice Bowl in Lakeland.
Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife, Avalon H. Byrd; sons, Michael Byrd, Sebring, Ronnie Byrd, Fort Myers, Perry Byrd, Lakeland; stepson, Michael Boyer, Lakeland; daughters, Marietta Mudgett, Fort Myers, Bobbie June Henderson, Sebring; stepdaughter, Sandra Smith, Milner, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Christian Center.

Katie Fuller, 76, Educator
LAKELAND -- Mrs. Katie Mae Roberts Fuller of Lakeland, who died of cancer Monday (Dec. 20, 2004) at her home, taught elementary school in Polk County and had a love of music. She was 76.
Born Sept. 29, 1928, in Savannah, Ga., she came here from Savannah 71 years ago.
Her son, Ronald K. Roberts of Lakeland, described Mrs. Fuller as very fair and honest.
"She was very religious, " he said, adding that she taught her children about religion at a very early age.
Mrs. Fuller played piano in church as a teenager.
After graduating from Bethune-Cookman College in 1950, she went on to teach second grade. She retired from the Polk County school system in 1982, and later gave piano lessons to numerous children at the Coleman Bush Center in Lakeland.
Mrs. Fuller, who was profiled in The Ledger in October 2003, was a strict teacher but her students and colleagues said she was also fair and loving.
She tutored students on a variety of subjects, her son said.
"She was brought up in a time when teachers taught all subjects, " Roberts said. "Whatever the problem was, she could help you."
She was a member and musician at St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Fuller is survived by her sons, Ronald K. Roberts and Rodney Roberts, both of Lakeland; daughter, Pamela Roberts, Lakeland; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at St. Marks United Methodist Church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

LAKELAND -- Master Corey Zachery Martin, the son of Donald Martin and Kongchay Sisanh of Lakeland, died Sunday (Sept. 12, 2004) at home. He was 2.
He was born in Lakeland on Dec. 18, 2001.
In addition to his parents, Master Martin is survived by his sister, Tayler Martin, Lakeland, and maternal grandparents, Bouasy and Ha Sisanh, Lakeland.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lakeland Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel.
