WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Raymond Hermal Jessee of Winter Haven died of heart failure Monday (March 28, 2005) at Winter Haven Hospital. He was 60.
Born in Olive Hill, Ky., on Aug. 5, 1944, Mr. Jessee came to Polk City from Cincinnati 30 years ago. He was a construction worker.
Mr. Jessee is survived by his daughter, Rae J. "Toogie" Grande, Lakeland; sons, Jeffrey Raymond Jessee, Cincinnati, Scotty Ray Jessee, California; sisters, Melba Jessee, Linda Marshall, Diana Burgess, all of Winter Haven, Janet Huber, Cincinnati; brothers, Reece Jessee, Cincinnati, Larry Jessee, Winter Haven; seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 E. Main St., Bartow. Graveside services will follow at 11 a.m. at Gandy Cemetery in Connersville.
JOSEPH McCALL, 56

LAKE WALES -- Mr. Joseph Lamar McCall of Lake Wales died of lung cancer Tuesday (March 29, 2005) at home. He was 56.
Born in Winter Haven on Dec. 13, 1948, Mr. McCall was a lifelong resident of Polk County. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a Pentecostal.
Mr. McCall is survived by his wife, Sharon McCall; daughters, Shayne Cassady and Angela Rose, both of Lake Wales, Tracie Costello, Jacksonville, Donna Bilbre, New Port Richey; sons, Kai McCall, Lake Wales, David Weeks, Lebanon, Tenn.; stepmother, Eunice Ann McCall, Winter Haven; brother, Rocky McCall, Winter Haven; sisters, Diane Forgey, Polk City, Denise Card, Winter Haven, Jimmie Faye Gaffin, Columbus, Ga.; 16 grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Marion Nelson Funeral Home of Lake Wales.
Charlotte Marks, 95, Civic Activist
LAKELAND -- Mrs. Charlotte Osman Marks, a longtime community activist, died of congestive heart failure Thursday (March 31, 2005) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 95.
"She was not only active in the Jewish Community but also in the civic community, " her daughter-in-law, Marcia Marks of Winter Park said.
Born in Stamford, Conn., on July 8, 1909, she came to Lakeland from there in 1950.
In her younger years, she served as a physical education teacher. "At one point, she was supposed to go to the Olympics. She was a very good swimmer, " Marcia Marks said, noting that Mrs. Marks was very athletic as a young lady.
She described her motherin-law as a very strong, independant lady who liked cooking, knitting, reading and staying on top of current events.
"She could talk to you about sports, politics . . . She read The Ledger and Tampa Tribune from cover to cover every day. She kept all of her own finances and investments. She depended on no one, " Marcia Marks said.
Mrs. Marks volunteered at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, the Polk Museum of Art and the Lakeland Public Library. She was a member of Hadassah and Temple Emanuel where she belonged to the Sisterhood.
Mrs. Marks was preceded in death by her husband, Sanford Marks, in the mid- to late 1970s. She is survived by her sons, Robert O. Marks, Winter Park, Paul T. Marks, Tampa; daughter, Louise Mells, Tampa; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Dukes Steen Funeral Home.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Deloris M. Barr of Lakeland died of congestive heart failure Tuesday (March 29, 2005) at home. She was 73.
Born in Indianapolis on Sept. 17, 1931, Mrs. Barr came to Lakeland from there 11 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a Christian.
Mrs. Barr is survived by her husband, Rolley Barr; daughters, Michele Bricker, Avon, Ind., Brigette Barr, Lakeland; son, Randy Barr, Lakeland; brother, Jack Edwards, Indianapolis; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Countryside Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

MULBERRY -- Mrs. Martha "Mott" Ann Matheny of Mulberry died of heart failure Saturday (March 26, 2005) at Brandon Regional Medical Center. She was 53.
Born in Ozark, Ala., on Oct. 23, 1951, Mrs. Matheny came to Mulberry from North Carolina five years ago. She was a self-employed residential and commercial painter. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. Matheny is survived by her husband, Charles R. Matheny; daughters, Sheena Wiseman, Bartow, Lanean Wiseman, Bradenton, Alicia Wiseman-King, Bradenton; sons, Jimmy Wiseman, Sarasota, Dion Wiseman, Christopher Wiseman, both of Bradenton; brothers, Wayne Smith, Babson Park, Rusty Smith, Westminster, Mass., Jim Watson, Mulberry; sister, Carolyn Annette Michel, Prairieville, La.; 13 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at First Baptist Church of Highland City, 5410 Yarborough Lane. Services will follow at noon at the church.

WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. John C. Rogers of Winter Haven died of lung cancer Sunday (March 27, 2005) at Life Care Center. He was 81.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, on July 2, 1923, Mr. Rogers came to Winter Haven from there in the 1970s. He was a purchasing agent for the National Cash Register Co. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Rogers is survived by his son, Gary Rogers, Dayton; daughter, Barbara Enriquez, Genoa, Ohio; two sisters, Ohio; two grandchildren.
Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery.

LAKELAND -- Mr. Curly Johnson of Lakeland died of cancer March 22, 2005, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 68.
Born in Barton, Ark., on Sept. 21, 1936, Mr. Johnson came to Lakeland from Arkansas in 1985. He was a carpenter.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his daughter, Carley Jean Pate, West Helena, Ark.; sisters, Carly Gill, Fayetteville, N.C., Geneva Kirkwood, Kentwood, Mich.; brothers, Curtis Harrell, Syracuse, N.Y., Eugene Johnson, Arkansas; five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. today at David Russell Funeral Home, Lakeland. Services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
