LAKELAND -- Mr. John Curtis Calberg of Lakeland died of respiratory failure Thursday (March 31, 2005) at Wedgewood Health Care Center, Lakeland. He was 83.
Born May 19, 1921, in Newton, Mass., he came here from West Palm Beach in 1992. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He was an artist and sign painter. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lakeland.
Mr. Calberg is survived by his daughter, Sheryl Mooney, Lakeland.

George Carlton Dorr, 78, Developer
WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. George Carlton Dorr, a retired business owner, Realtor and developer, died Sunday (April 3, 2005) at Good Shepherd Hospice Residents Center in Auburndale of complications following a stroke. He was 78.
"He always had an interest in preserving and utilizing the land, " said Nan Dorr, his wife of 48 years. "He had a marvelous imagination and had wonderful ideas of what could be done to preserve the land."
Born in Richmond, Va., on Jan. 13, 1927, Mr. Dorr came to Eagle Lake from there at the age of 2. He attended Inwood Elementary School and Winter Haven High School before attending Sewanee Military Academy. He continued his education at the United States Coast Guard Academy, and graduated from Florida Southern College with a degree in chemistry in 1952.
Mr. Dorr served in the Merchant Marine during the end of World War II and enlisted in the Marine Corps during the Korean War era and was discharged as a captain.
As a real estate broker, he opened Terra Firma Real Estate in downtown Winter Haven in 1955. The business is still in operation.
"He had a little tin building downtown and that is what he opened it in, " Nan Dorr said.
"He developed one of the first mobile home parks in Winter Haven when our children were really little -- Lucerne Park Mobile Court, and it is still there, " she said.
Mr. Dorr opened Central Travel in 1977, but continued to focus on developing and real estate.
"Work was what he loved to do to take care of his family. He was very proud of his three children, " Nan Dorr said.
He was president of the Winter Haven Board of Realtors. He served on the board of directors for Barnett Bank, and was past president of the board of directors for Waverly Co-op. He was a member of the Florida Club. He was a founding member of the Lake Region Yacht and Country Club.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Winter Haven and a vestry member.
In addition to his wife, Nan Dorr, Mr. Dorr is survived by his daughter, Sally Botkin, Fort Lauderdale; sons, George C. Dorr Jr., Winter Haven, and Charlie Dorr, Windemere; sister, Shirley Brandon, Savannah, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winter Haven.

LAKE WALES -- Mrs. Naomi S. Davis of Lake Wales died of complications of Parkinson's disease Sunday (April 3, 2005) in Lake Wales. She was 83.
Born in Tift County, Ga., on Oct. 24, 1921, she came to Lakeland from there in 1927. She owned and bred greyhounds.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Davis. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Parks, Lake Wales; sister, Opal Harper, Lakeland; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at Lakeland Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel.

LAKELAND -- Ms. Catherine M. Daly of Lakeland died of heart failure Saturday (April 2, 2005). She was 83.
Born July 17, 1921, in Glasgow, Scotland, she came here in 1957. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lakeland.
Ms. Daly was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Daly. She is survived by her son, Jim Daly, Lakeland; daughter, Linda Lanier, Lakeland; sister, Morag Pridgen, Lakeland; brother, David Gardner, Lakeland; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Lakeland.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Phyllis "Jeannie" Roberts of Lakeland died of heart failure Saturday (April 2, 2005) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 69.
Born in Rockford, Ill., on Aug. 25, 1935, she became a winter resident of Lakeland one year ago, coming from Waterman, Ill. She was a homemaker and a member of the Red Hat Society. She was active in the Citrus Woods Senior Community and a member of the Glassaholic Club.
Mrs. Roberts is survived by her husband, Bob Roberts; daughters, Joni Beierlotzer, DeKalb, Ill., Kim Schrader, Hinckley, Ill.; son, Jack L. Roberts, San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Betty Foose, Beverly Ray, both of Lakeland, Darlene Hime, Onawa, Iowa, Barbara Schubert, Encinidas, Calif., Audrey Berger, Sandy Oesterreich, both of DeKalb; brother, Wes Ray, Upland, Calif.; four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held later at Citrus Wood Senior Community.

JACKSONVILLE -- Mrs. Brenda Lee Manasco of Jacksonville, who has family in Lakeland, died Friday (April 1, 2005) in Jacksonville. The cause of death is pending autopsy results. She was 45.
She was born in Jacksonville on June 26, 1959. She was a compliance review officer for Prudential. She was a member of Gold's Gym.
Mrs. Manasco is survived by her father and stepmother, Charles and Elizabeth Herbert, Lakeland; mother, Margaret Landon, Jacksonville; sons, Shawn Fowler, Tampa, William Harper, Lakeland; daughters, Samantha Fowler, Jacksonville, Lisa Garcia, and Cindy Blaeuer, both of Lakeland; brothers, Roy and Mark Herbert; sisters, Linda VanGundy, and Patty Slappey, both of Jacksonville; two grandchildren.
