William E. Shenko

William E. Shenko, 72, of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., died Oct. 1, 2000 from complications from Alzheimer's disease (the long good-bye).

He was born Dec. 23, 1927, in Beach, N.D. Bill attained a B.A. from North Dakota State, and a juris doctorate from George Washington University. Bill worked for the VA and the General Services Office of the U.S. government. He also served in the U.S. Navy and as an officer in the JAG Corps of the United States Air Force. He had been a resident of Lee County since 1956. He was president and founder of Sun Coast Adjustment Co., was a retired member of the Florida Bar, an American arbitration associate, certified arbitrator, a circuit court mediator and an all lines insurance adjuster.

When he was active, Bill was a member of the Royal Palm Yacht Club, a charter member and second commodore of CMCS, and member of the Downtown Fort Myers Rotary, Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce, the Southwest Florida Claims Association, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the Church of the Ascension. Bill was also the owner of Rankin's Anchorage Marina at Fort Myers Beach. Bill, his wife, Jeanette, and family won many sailing events aboard one of their several boats named "Elysium," including the Mount Gay Rum Fort Lauderdale to Key West race, the Green Turtle Key Abaco Race, the Baumgartner Trophy, the Messmer Cup, the Miller Cup, the Michelob Cup, Punta Gorda Isles, Boca Grande, Edison Pageant, and multiple winner of the Summerset. They also sailed to Mexico, Cuba and the Bahamas, all while pushing all the kids through college.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Jeanette in 1992; and by his granddaughter, Katie in 1993.

Survivors include all of his children, Bill (wife, Linda) Shenko Jr. of Fort Myers Beach, Joan (husband, Wally) von Arx of Fort Myers, Jim (wife, Nancy) Shenko of Fort Myers Beach and Ann Marie (husband, Will) Mims of Spartanburg, S.C.; and grandchildren, Jessica, Erika, Matthew, Ana, Jim Jr., Will, Sawyer and Jeanette's sister, Mavis, whose love and support cannot be measured.

The family wishes to especially thank the loving and caring staff of Canterbury House at the Vineyards. As with Jeanette, at Bill's request, services will be private. Bill and Jeanette just ask that you toast the sunset and look for the green flash, as they have found their "Elysium." Contributions, if desired, may be made to the Edison Community College Foundation, Post Office Box 69210, Fort Myers, FL 33906. Arrangements are by Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Fort Myers.

Herman K. Peters

Herman K. Peters, 73, of North Port, Fla., died Sept. 30, 2000.

He was born July 25, 1927, in Richmond, Ky. Mr. Peters came to this area in 1950 from Lexington, Ky. He was the owner of Peter's Claim Service in Sarasota. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his two daughters, Sandra Carmouche of Dunnellon, Fla., and Tamara Nizam of Ormond, Fla.; three grandchildren and a friend, Darlene Menzer of North Port.

There will be no services at this time. Arrangements are by Farley Funeral Home, North Port.

Stephen Potasky

Stephen Potasky, 80, of North Port, Fla., died Sept. 20, 2000.

Born June 22, 1920, in Elizabeth, N.J., he moved to this area in 1990 from Cranford, N.J. He was a senior illustrator for ITT Defense Communications in Nutley, N.J., for more than 25 years, working as a watercolor and pen-and-ink artist. He was a former member of New Jersey Watercolor Society and several New Jersey art groups. Mr. Potasky was a graduate of Art Academy in New York City. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in New Guinea, the southern Philippines and western Pacific for three years. He attended Unity Church.

Survivors include his daughters, Phyllis Becker of Hillsborough, N.J., and Patrice Patterson of Cranford, N.J.; sisters, Mary LaRocco of Cranford and Rose Mikyska of Anaheim, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held privately in New Jersey. Arrangements are by Ewing Funeral Home, Venice, Fla.

Marvin Paul Gabrielson

Marvin Paul Gabrielson, 76, of Englewood, Fla., died Oct. 1, 2000, at Englewood Community Hospital, Englewood.

He was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Milwaukee, Wisc., to George and Nora (Bakken) Gabrielson. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and a 35-year employee of Time Insurance Company of Wisconsin. While in Milwaukee he was a member and past president of the Disabled American veterans and after moving to Englewood eight years ago he had become a member of the American Legion Post No. 113 of Rotonda West, Fla.

Survivors include his sister, Delores Gutzmann of Englewood, niece, Gail Gutzmann of Englewood and nephew, James Gutzmann of Waukesha, Wisc.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at the American Legion Post No. 113 of Rotonda West. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Legion Post No. 113 War Memorial Wall, 3436 Indiana Road, Rotonda West, FL 33947. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood.

Veronica Flaherty Hibbard

Veronica Flaherty Hibbard, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Oct. 1, 2000, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

She was born May 10, 1928, in Boston, Mass. She was the beloved daughter of the late Julia and David Driscoll. She moved to Port Charlotte in 1989 from Haywood, Calif. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. She retired as a registered nurse and worked most of her years in intensive care nurseries. She served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corp. as a lieutenant from 1958 to 1960 and was stationed at Bremerton, Wash., and Chelsea Naval Hospital in Massachusetts. She was a graduate of Saugus High School, St. Margaret's Hospital School in Boston, Mass.

Survivors include her two stepdaughters, Gloria Lawler of Beverly, Mass., Irene Hall of Plaistow, N.H.; five step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; niece, Barbara Groom of Massachusetts; great-niece, Paula Morris of New Hampshire; grandnephew, Frank Groom III of Massachusetts. She also leaves her beloved cocker spaniel, Taffy Marie, which she loved very much. She was preceded in death by her husband, Foster F. Hibbard and her foster mother, Eleanor H. Talbot.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte chapel. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church will officiate the services. Entombment to follow services at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Julion H. Horner

Julion H. Horner, 64, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Oct. 1, 2000, at his residence in Port Charlotte.

Born Jan. 25, 1936, in Ebb, Fla., Mr. Horner came to Port Charlotte 43 years ago from Monticello, Fla. He was a land surveyor for a construction company. Mr. Horner was a past member of the VFW in Brooksfield, Fla. He served as a auxiliary deputy with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office in the early 1970s, was a member of the Society of Professional Land Surveyors and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He attended First Baptist Church of Port Charlotte in Port Charlotte.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Taylor Horner; sons, Randall Lynn Horner and David Thomas Horner, both of North Port; daughter, Robin Elaine Bergstrom of Big Cabin, Okla.; brothers, Leonard E. Horner and David G. Horner, both of Perry, Fla., and Joseph J. Horner of Punta Gorda, Fla.; sister, Susie R. Jones of Monticello, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Julion Kevin Horner; daughter, Pamela Lynn Horner and brother, Leroy Horner.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at Paul Schelm Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 6 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda.

Robert Leenhouts

Robert Leenhouts, 83, of Ocala, Fla., died Sept. 28, 2000, at Harborside Healthcare.

Born in Williamson, N.Y., he moved to Florida in 1980 from Webster, N.Y. He was a stationary engineer with Kodak. Mr. Leenhouts was a Methodist, a Mason and an East Shriner.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Leenhouts of Ocala; son, Robert Leenhouts of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister, Linda Ohtiveros of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

There will be no services. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Fruitland Park, Fla.

Louise E. Murphy

Louise E. Murphy, 77, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Sept. 29, 2000.

Born Nov. 24, 1922, in Springfield, Mo., she moved to this area in 1974 from Marietta, Ga. She was a retired registered nurse. She was a member of the BPO Elks in Punta Gorda and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas J.; aunt, Mary Newton; and grandson, Ron Crowe.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Barbara Y. Koenig

Barbara Y. Koenig, 81, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte.

She was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Long Beach, Calif., to Francis and Wilma Kidd Howell.

Barbara married Clarence Koenig and they lived in Schiller Park, Ill. Being a Californian at heart, she and her husband moved to Port Charlotte in 1976, considering it to be the "other West Coast."

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Clarence Koenig of Port Charlotte; four sons, Michael Koenig of North Port, Fla., Gerald (Debbie) Koenig of River Grove, Ill., Kenneth (Karen) Koenig of Columbia, Ky., and Donald (Violet) Koenig of Des Plaines, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Brian (Shea) Koenig of Columbia, Laura Koenig of Des Plaines, Cathy Piedlow of Port Charlotte, Dianne Caponera of Fort Myers, Fla., Marc Piedlow of Chicago, Ill., David Carter of North Port and Lydia of Chicago; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Miles, Dana, Jonathan, Michael, Linda, Michael Trent, Nicholas, Jacob, Farrah and Vivien; and her niece, Lois Nickols of Redding, Calif. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Piedlow.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, at Cuneo-Columbian Funeral Home, 10300 W. Grand Ave., Franklin Park, Ill. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Glen Oak Cemetery in Westchester, Ill.

Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Cremation Services and Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Punta Gorda.

Noella Dubois

Noella Dubois, 83, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, Fla. Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Cremation Services and Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Punta Gorda.

Rocco R. Patrone Sr.

Rocco R. Patrone Sr., 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005.

He was born Aug. 16, 1915, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Peter and Concetta Patrone.

Mr. Patrone served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube for 35 years, operated Patrones Turkey Farm from 1958 until 1968, and was the owner and operator of Patrones Market in East Fairfield, Ohio, with his wife, Dorothy, until 1980, when he fully retired. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and was of the Episcopal faith.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy (Hake) Patrone; daughters, Sandra (Charles) Holsinger and Diane Kannal, both of Port Charlotte and Gina (Daniel) Brown of New Waterford; sons, Rocco (Mona) Jr. of Monroe City, Ind., and Ralph (Paula) of New Waterford, Ohio; his caretaker, Maryann Leddy; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Mr. Patrone's life will be at noon Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at his daughter, Sandra Holsinger's residence.

The family suggests memorial donations to Mr. Patrone's charity of choice, The Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, Tampa Bay Chapter, 5959 Central Ave. #202, St. Petersburg, FL 33710.

Jeannette Field-Streeter

Jeannette (Bettcher) Field-Streeter, 89, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, in Punta Gorda.

She was born Aug. 24, 1916.

She was a graduate of Arms Academy and North Adams Teachers' College. She taught in the Greenfield school system and other area districts. As the wife of Frederick D. Field, she was a resident of Shelburne Falls, Mass. After his death, she married Wendell E. Streeter and lived in Bernardston, Mass., during the summers, and in Punta Gorda the rest of the year. She was a seasonal resident of Florida since 1982. She was an active and well-respected member of each community she lived in. She especially enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by a sister, Marie E. Bettcher Waste of Keene, N.H.; three children, Frederick Donald Field of Littleton, Mass., Caroline Field Roosa of Punta Gorda and Alton, N.H., and Diane Field Scott of Easton, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be graveside services at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at the Arms Cemetery in Shelburne Falls, with the Rev. David Neil officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the donor's charity of choice.

Johnson Funeral Home, Shelburne Falls, is in charge of arrangements.

David C. West

David C. West, 76, of Englewood, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, in Englewood.

He was born March 11, 1929, in Ann Arbor, Mich., to Clifford and Edith (Grant) West.

He served in the U.S. Army. He moved to the Englewood area in 1998 from Elkhart, Ind. He was a professional registered forester, a graduate of the University of Michigan and a member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte J. West of Englewood; and a daughter, Mary West of Brooklyn Center, Minn. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elinor Forsythe.

Memorial services will be held in Michigan at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan, 430 E. University, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1115.

Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel, has been selected to handle the arrangements.

JoAnn Bentley

JoAnn Bentley, 67, of Cape Coral, Fla., and formerly of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, in Cape Coral.

She was born April 18, 1938, in Clovis, N.M.

JoAnn was a homemaker and mother of three. She moved from Oklahoma to Punta Gorda in 1995, and recently moved from Punta Gorda to Cape Coral.

She is survived by her children; daughter, Della Booth of Cape Coral; and sons, Richard Bentley Jr. of Fort Gibson, Okla., and Paul Bentley of Roxboro, N.C.; three brothers, Jay and Bobby Ham, both of Artesia, N.M., and Frank Ham of Lubbock, Texas; and two granddaughters, Ashley Cook and Elizabeth Ann Bentley.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Arkansas.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Stephanie Heron

Stephanie Heron, 79, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Peace River Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Port Charlotte.

She was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Jamaica, West Indies.

Stephanie moved from Jamaica to Port Charlotte in 1994. She was a homemaker.

Stephanie is survived by her sister, Dorothy Parris of Port Charlotte; and brother, Ewun Heron of Leesburg, Fla.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte.

Interment is private.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Port Charlotte Chapel.
