Jeremy John Newell, 28, of Englewood, Fla., died Sept. 6, 2001.
He was born June 10, 1973, in Port Charlotte, Fla., and was a native of Englewood. He was a graduate of Lemon Bay High School, class of 1991, and had a engineering degree from University Central Florida. He was employed with Hole & Montes as an structural engineer working on the Placida Road Project.
He is survived by his mother, Toni Copeman of Englewood; father, Richard of Englewood; two brothers, Trevor Copeman and Joshua Newell, both of Englewood; maternal grandmother, Jenna McAlpin of Venice, Fla.; paternal grandmother, Jane Zuka of Englewood; three uncles, Mark Reed, Matthew Lock and Darryl (Sandra) Newell, all of Englewood; two aunts, Sherry Sattel of Las Vegas, Nev., and Lori Day of Seattle, Wash.; and several cousins, Kendra Porter, Elijah Porter, Kayla and Jada Newell, all of Englewood.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 10, at Englewood United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert Gibbs from the church. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Lemon Bay Funeral Homes, Englewood Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Lela F. Collins
Lela Frances Collins, 83, of Virginia Beach, Va., and formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Raleigh, N.C.
She moved to Port Charlotte in 1962, before moving to Virginia in 2002. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Collins was an active member of First Baptist Church of Port Charlotte, where she enjoyed Prime-Timers, the W. M. U., and Sunday School. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Mrs. Collins is survived by her daughter, Annette (Nathan) Collins Dressler of Virginia Beach; brothers, James A. Bruce of Robbins, N.C., and Arthur W. Bruce of Norfolk, Va.; and nephew, Jim (Joyce) Bruce of Oak Island, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olen C. Collins.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Port Charlotte, 20035 Quesada Ave., Port Charlotte, with burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte. The Rev. James Kibelbek will officiate.

Mabel P. Douglas
Mabel P. Douglas, 91, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, in Port Charlotte.
She was born June 11, 1913, in Fountain, Fla.
Mrs. Douglas relocated to Port Charlotte in 1972 from Davie, Fla. She had been a real estate agent for Waldrop Realty and more recently Coldwell-Banker Sunstar Realty, retiring in 1995.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Pilcher of Port Charlotte; a son, John C. Douglas of Castle Rock, Colo.; a brother, Charles (Blanche) Porter of Titusville, Fla.; a sister, Lillian Dull of Auburndale, Fla.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin T. Douglas, in 1990.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at the Port Charlotte chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte.

Malcolm M. Simons Jr.
Malcolm M. Simons Jr., 88, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004.
He was the son of Malcolm and Ida (Meyer) Simons Sr., born July 9, 1916 in Mercer, Pa.
Malcolm graduated from Camp Hill High and Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, where he also attended graduate school at Sweetbriar College, Cornell University and Dickinson School of Law of Penn State University. He served in the Naval Aviation during World War II. Malcolm was the president and CEO of Malcolm M. Simons and Son, Inc., an independent insurance agency and brokerage firm before retiring. He and his wife Ruth moved to Port Charlotte in 1975 from Carlisle, Pa. Malcolm was a lifelong Methodist and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. For 11 years he taught a bird study course at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County and directed bird surveys for Atlantic and Gulf Coast Beached. He was also a member of the Peace River Audubon Society, Venice Area Audubon Society and Florida Ornithological Society where he led field trips and gave lectures.
Malcolm will be greatly missed by his wife Ruth; two sons; three daughters; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Helen Gould
Helen "Sally" Gould, 73, of Rotonda West, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004.
She was born April 28, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Clarence and Helen (Altmeyer) Zeise.
She was a loving wife, mother and caretaker for her family. She moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., in 1996, from Miami, Fla., and then to Rotonda West in 1998. A dedicated communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Mrs. Gould demonstrated her faith in her generosity, humility and charity. As the treasurer of the St. Francis Outreach Ministry, she always strived to keep the food pantry stocked and was a brilliant ombudsman for the individuals and families she served.
She is survived by her three daughters, Laura A. Gould-Fantato of Italy, Teresa A. "Terri" Gould of North Port, Fla., and Rita A. Gould of Englewood, Fla.; one sister, Margaret "Peggy" Prostko of Austin, Texas; one brother, Clarence "Chuck" Zeise of Deltona, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Marco and Melissa.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Ira Gould in 1998.
Funeral Liturgy will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, with the Rev. Marcel Dube officiating. Inurnment will be at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery in Miami, Fla.

Kimberly Kay Bonham, 38, of North Port, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at her home. Arrangements are by James A. McKee Funeral Homes, North Port.
Robert D. Woodmansee
Robert D. Woodmansee, 60, of North Port, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at his home.
He was born Nov. 20, 1943, in Springfield, Mass., to Harold and Martha (Marshall) Woodmansee.
He served in the U.S. Air Force. He moved to the North Port area 16 years ago from Massachusetts. He retired from the Department of Corrections, Charlotte Corrections Institute.
Mr. Woodmansee is survived by sons, Robert Woodmansee Jr. of North Port and Ryan Woodmansee of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a daughter, Shawn Woodmansee of Port Charlotte; sisters, Anne Woodmansee of Manhattan, Kan., Lynne Wimberly of Germany, Jane Woodmansee of Clinton, Conn., and Karen Swenson of Springfield; and two grandchildren.
A service will be private for the family.

Sam Brett
Sam Brett, 81, passed away Sept. 3, 2003, in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Known as "The Candy Man of Port Charlotte," he was born June 3, 1922, in Bronx, N.Y. He was a sergeant in World War II, serving most of his time in the Pacific Islands. He held a master's degree in engineering from New York University, and had been a civil engineer for the city of New York prior to retirement. Special thanks and gratitude to Reggie Irish, his caretaker and dear friend for the past months, and the Disabled Veterans of Port Charlotte.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Theresa Brett; children, Angela M. Brett and David Brett, both of New York; brothers, Nick of California and Sid of Port Charlotte; four grandchildren in New York; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a service at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home in Port Charlotte. A graveside service with military honors will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.
Dean L. Weaver
Dean L. Weaver, 81, of Port Charlotte, Florida died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at his residence.
He was born July 23, 1922, in Johnstown, Pa., and moved to Port Charlotte in 1958 from Roaring Spring, Pa. He retired as manager of the Punta Auto Supply Store after 36 years of service. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte. A former member of the Sons of the American Revolution, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 24th Tank Battalion, 13th Armored Division, under the command of Gen. George Patton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Olive B. Weaver of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Wunda (Anthony) Shuga of Austin, Texas, and Marsha (Carmelo) Cusacut of Kissimmee, Fla.; two sons, Dean L. (Debra) Weaver II of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Stephen (Carol) Weaver of Spring Hill, Tenn.; a sister, Dorris (Ross) Wright of Hopewell, Va.; two brothers, Donald (Ethel Mae) Weaver of Salix, Texas, and Merle (Dixie) Weaver of St. Michael, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Georgetta Weaver of Naples, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; Mr. Weaver was preceded in death by two brothers, Faustin Weaver and Lee Weaver; and a granddaughter, Johanna Lee Weaver.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte chapel. Lay minister Clifford (Al) Evans will officiate. Interment with military honors by the U.S. Army will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Robert C. Hart
Robert C. Hart, 72, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2003.
He was born Feb. 17, 1931, in Ozone Park, N.Y., and moved to Englewood in 1986 from West Babylon, N.Y. Mr. Hart retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Babylon, N.Y. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 113 in Rotonda West, Fla.; a member of the Edgewater Club in Englewood; and a member of the United Methodist church in Englewood. He served in the U.S. Army and National Guard and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his beloved wife Ruth; children, Robert (Jan) Hart of Scottsdale, Ariz., Bruce (Caron) Hart of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Cindy Hart of Islip, N.Y.; grandchildren, Gary Hart of Lake Worth, Fla., Michael James of Cape Coral, Fla., Robert Hart of Scottsdale, Thomas Hart of Scottsdale, Samantha Hart of West Babylon, N.Y.; Tracy Hart of Ohio, Joseph Vasquez of Islip, and Patrick Hart of Scottsdale; and four great-grandchildren.

George L. Reis
George L. Reis, 74, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Punta Gorda.
He was born Sept. 8, 1926 in Detroit, Mich. Mr. Reis loved the beauty and solitude of Punta Gorda so much, he decided to relocate here 16 years ago from Detroit. Mr. Reis worked for the Detroit News for nearly 38 years in several advertising departments, of which he spent 25 years with the News' national advertising department. He served in the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian J. Reis of Punta Gorda; and three sons.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Faith Lutheran Church, 4005 Palm Drive, Punta Gorda, with Pastor Barr Chittick officiating.

Merwin K. Fenton
Merwin K. "Bud" Fenton, 85, of Englewood, Fla., formerly of Portville, N.Y. and Chautauqua Lake, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001.
Born May 31, 1916 in Conneaut, Ohio, he was a son of the late Porter L. and Carrie Wildman Fenton. On Feb. 14, 1942, in Pittsford, N.Y., he married the former Marjorie Gage, who died July 19, 1999. Mr. Fenton was a graduate of Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y. and St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y.
Known to his peers, former students and friends as Coach Bud Fenton, he devoted his life to sports and the education of youth in the Western New York area. After graduating from Ithaca College in 1941, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a native of Chautauqua County in New York. He returned to Western New York in 1946 to be the physical education teacher, football coach and athletic director at Brocton Central School. From 1948 until his retirement in 1971, Mr. Fenton taught boys physical education and coached varsity baseball at Portville Central School. He also served as the school's athletic director for a time. On Sept. 26, 1998, at homecoming weekend at Ithaca College, he was inducted into the Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame.
Mr. Fenton was a member of the Portville Masonic Lodge 579 F&AM, the Odd Fellows and the Portville American Legion Post 814. He was the secretary/treasurer of the Border Football League for 20 years. He was a member of the Cattaraugus County Baseball Umpires Association for 15 years and its president for two years. He was a member of the Allegany County Baseball Umpires for eight years and a member of the Chautauqua County Football Officials Association for 20 years. He was a member and past secretary of the Portville Rod & Gun Club and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Football Association, Bradford, Pa. chapter, for 15 years. He was a member of the Cattaraugus County Athletic Association for 24 years and served as president three times. He was a member and past president of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus County Physical Education Association.
Surviving are a daughter, Martha Jane (John) O'Brian of Jamestown, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Shannon McMahon of Amherst, N.Y. and Christiaan Parks of Olympia, Wash. In addition to his wife, Mr. Fenton was predeceased by a brother, Harry Fenton, and a sister, Marjorie Huff, in 1998.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 51 S. Main St., Portville. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in the funeral home. The Rev. Carol Thayer, pastor of Portville United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial be will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Portville.

Frances C. Mansfield
Frances C. Mansfield, 92, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004.
She was born March 3, 1912, in New Haven, Conn., to Charles and Frances Parritt.
Frances retired from a catering business as a banquet waitress. She moved to Port Charlotte in 1975, from New Haven.
She is survived by her two sons, Bob (Sue) Mansfield of Port Charlotte, and Arthur (Deloris) Benz of Port Charlotte; two grandchildren, William Mansfield of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Robyn Mansfield of New Castle, Colo.; a great-grandson, Anthony Mansfield of West Haven; and two nephews, Eugene Bertolini of West Haven and Leslie Bertolini of Seymour, Conn.
The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home in Port Charlotte followed by a funeral service at noon. Interment will be at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens at a later date.
