Ruth M. Evans

Ruth M. Evans, 81. of Arcadia, Fla., died Aug. 21, 1999.

She was born Jan. 10, 1918, in Walton County, Fla. She was a resident of the Arcadia area for 42 years, coming from Holt, Fla. She was a homemaker and a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church in the Bunker Community.

Survivors include her husband, William Laney Evans Sr. of Arcadia; daughters, Betty Gross of Alabama, and Ruby Stone and Gloria Brantley, both of Arcadia; two sons, William Laney Evans Jr. of Lake Charles, La., and John B. Evans of Gainesville, Fla.; three sisters, Merle Sullivan of Gainesville, Lyda Mae Riley of Holt, and Johnnie Ownbey of Land O Lakes, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Aug. 23 at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 24 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Charles J. Stanka

Charles J. Stanka, 72, of Arcadia, Fla., died Aug. 20, 1999.

Born Aug. 25, 1926, in Winfield, N.Y., he moved to this area 23 years ago from Centerport, N.Y. He was a licensed practical nurse, retired from DeSoto Correctional Institution. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Stanka attended Nocatee First Baptist Church, Nocatee, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Stanka of Arcadia; daughters, Kathy Weigman of Fairview, Utah, Elaine Hall of North Port, Fla., Nancy Young of Nocatee, Fla., Janet Hysell of Punta Gorda, Fla.; son, Gary Charles Stanka of Arcadia; sister, Catherine Johnson of Port Charlotte; and 15 grandchildren.

Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Nocatee First Baptist Church, Nocatee. Memorial donations may be made to DeSoto County 4-H Club, P.O. Box 310, Arcadia, FL 34265. Cremation arrangements are by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Rita O. Powell

Rita O. Powell, 79, of North Port, Fla., died Aug. 20, 1999.

She was born Jan. 13, 1920, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Survivors include her husband, Donald; daughters, Beverly Templin of Pittsburgh and Gay Strelick of Rochester, N.Y.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 220 Wexford Blvd., Venice, FL 34293. Arrangements are by At Peace Cremation Services Inc., Sarasota, Fla.

Virginia I. Cooper

Virginia I. Cooper, 77, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Oct. 11, 2001, at her home.

Born Sept. 11, 1924, in Bethlehem, Pa., she moved to our area in 1992. She was a homemaker, a member of the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte, a member of the Women of the Moose in Port Charlotte and a volunteer for the VIP Center of Charlotte County.

She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Gilmore of Port Charlotte and Patsy Ann Fidler of Whitehall, Pa.; a sister, Marie Ertle of Bethlehem; a brother, Earl George of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a granddaughter, Tammy Creveling. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Cooper, in 1999.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Visually Impaired Persons of Charlotte County, 23312 Harper Ave., Charlotte Harbor, FL 33980. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Earl D. Chaplin Jr.

Earl D. "Nick" Chaplin Jr., 66, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Oct. 9, 2001, at Englewood Community Hospital.

Mr. Chaplin was born June 21, 1935, in Mattoon, Ill., to Earl D. and Mary (Love) Chaplin Sr. Nick was the owner/operator of Nick's Marine in Mattoon for more than 15 years, and moved to Englewood from there in 1981. He was a Master Marine Mechanic, both in Illinois and Florida and, along with water sports like fishing and water skiing, he was an avid pool player. Nick has played in numerous leagues and won many tournaments both in Illinois and Florida.

He is survived by his son, Anthony "Tony" Chaplin of Greenwood, Ind.; a daughter, Tammy Chaplin-Batha of St. Louis, Mo., brothers, Charlie of Mattoon, and Larry of Chicago, Ill.; a 1-year-old grandson, Max Anthony Chaplin of Greenwood; and his special companion, Teddy, his 10-year-old cocker spaniel.

A memorial service was conducted Thursday evening, Oct. 11, in Englewood. A memorial service will be conducted in Charleston, Ill., at a later date. Private inurnment will be at Harmony Cemetery, Greenup, Ill. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Englewood Chapel.

Edmund F. Parent

Edmund F. Parent, 86, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Oct. 3, 2001, in Punta Gorda. Arrangements under the direction of the Punta Gorda Chapel of Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home.

Lewis DePasquale

Lewis "Count Lewis" DePasquale, 71, of Atlantic City, N.J. and Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sept. 26, 2001 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital after a heroic battle with cancer.

Born in Trenton, N.J., he was a graduate of Philadelphia's Bartrum High School. A Korean War veteran, he served as a cryptographer and as a musician in the special services. He resided in Levittown, Pa., Miami, Fla. and Port Charlotte. Count Lewis, a jazz keyboardist proficient on the Hammond B3 organ, pioneered its use with a nightclub trio featuring brother Bobby Young on drums and saxophonist George Freeman. He worked with Ella Fitzgerald, Pat Martino, Sara Vaughn and Harry Bellafonte. Traveling the country, he played with such luminaries as Charlie Ventura, Chris Columbo, John Civera, Roy Eldridge, Jay Cory, Turnip Greens, Billy Ruth, Steve Gibson and the Red Caps, Al Hibbler, Charlie Shovers, Benny Green, Arthur Prysock, Bill Haynes, Sonny Stitt, Bobby Martin and many other musicians. Count Lewis also worked with comedy geniuses Flip Wilson, Lenny Bruce, Jackie Mason, Jackie Gale and many others. He was a featured opening act at the Golden Nugget Casino Lounge and worked in numerous casino lounges, as well as major nightclubs and jazz rooms. He was in the process of writing his experiences with Lenny Bruce for Doubleday.

Mr. DePasquale is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Dolores (nee Martino); son, Lewis Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Ocean City, N.J.; daughter, Carolyn Caldwell and her husband, Tom; grandson, Tommy Caldwell of Goulds, Fla.; son, Anthony of Atlantic City; and a brother, Robert "Bobby" Young and his wife, Lorraine, of Atlantic City.

Committal services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Charlotte Memorial Gardens, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda.

Idella Klewin

Idella (Gould) Klewin, 81, of Mystic, Conn., and formerly of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Oct. 10, 2001, at the Mystic Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a patient for the past year and a half.

She was born in Proctor, Vt., on April 25, 1920, the daughter of the late R. John and Marjorie Norris Gould. She married the late Woodrow Klewin at the Cathedral of the Pines in New Hampshire in 1960. He died in 1994. Mrs. Klewin was a hairdresser and had operated Village Coiffures in Stonington Village, N.H. for many years before moving to Punta Gorda. She enjoyed ballroom dancing and travel. She had been active with the Punta Gorda Civic Association.

She is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Brown of Punta Gorda, Brenda Sylvestre of Mystic and Cindy Raffo of Pawcatuck, Conn.; stepdaughters, Florence Klewin, Joy Klewin, both of Mystic, Linda Klewin of Westerly, R.I. and Barbara Jean Dunbar of Utah; a stepson, Woodrow Klewin Jr. of Mystic; a brother, George A. Gould of Chantilly, Va.; a sister, Marie Whitford of Mystic; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and 14 step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers, John Gould, Alan Gould and Walter Gould.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Rte. 1, Mystic. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Patient Recreation Fund at the Mystic Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 475 High St., Mystic, CT 06355. Arrangements are by Mystic Funeral Home Inc.

Marie H. Malski

Marie H. Malski, 78, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died May 17, 2001. Memorial services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 16, at San Antonio Catholic Church. Arrangements by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Alice V. Rambo

Alice "Jeanne" Virginia (Tuthill) Rambo, of Lake Suzy, Fla., died Oct. 8, 2001, at her home under Hospice Care.

Alice was born Sept. 10, 1921, in South Jamesport, Long Island, N.Y. She was a loving wife and mother of nine children. Alice resided in Riverhead, N.Y. while raising her family, moving to Lake Suzy in 1988.

Survivors include her three daughters, Cynthia (Richard) English of Punta Gorda, Fla., Linda Rambo of El Granada, Calif. and Darla (Charles) Kujawski of Lake Suzy; six sons, William Rambo, Harry (Susan) Rambo, and Robert Rambo, all of Riverhead, Keith (Diane) Rambo of Naples, Fla., James (Laurence), Scott (Colette) Rambo, all of Punta Gorda; three sisters, Nan C. Nine of Punta Gorda, Marjorie Boudreau of South Jamesport, N.Y. and Audrey Dutil of Willimantic, Conn.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Harry W. Rambo Sr. Nieces and nephews and many friends in both New York and Florida also will greatly miss her.

A visitation was held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, with services following the visitation. A funeral service will be held at the McLaughlin Funeral Home with burial at Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Ave., Sarasota, FL 34238. Arrangements are by the Punta Gorda Chapel, Kays Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home.

Ernest John Fischer, 90, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Oct. 9, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services-Venice, Venice, Fla. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Cemetery, Englewood.

Julia H. Fry

Julia H. Fry, 90, of Englewood, Fla., died Oct. 10, 2001. Lemon Bay Funeral Homes, Englewood Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Grace H. Spata

Grace H. Spata, 84, of Port Charlotte, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001. Arrangements by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda.

Nicola Durso

Nicola Durso, 77, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 13, 1924 in Sicily, Italy, and lived here since moving from Connecticut in 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of San Antonio Catholic Church.

Mrs. Durso is survived by her daughter, Josephine (Paul) Campisi of Port Charlotte; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Durso Sebastiano, in 1992.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, at San Antonio Catholic Church, 24445 Rampart Blvd., Port Charlotte. Arrangements are being handled by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda, Fla. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Herbert C. Hoff

Herbert C. Hoff, 76, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in Punta Gorda.

Mr. Hoff was born June 1, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa. He has resided in this area since 1959, moving here from Miami, Fla. He was a masonry contractor in Punta Gorda for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Charlotte Harbor, Fla., participating in the church choir and the building committee. He was preceded in death by his brother, Albert L. Hoff.

Survivors include three daughters, Trudy (Bobby) Douglas of Fort Ogden, Fla., Millie Hoff of Port Charlotte, Fla. and Alice Crider of Punta Gorda; four sons, Perry (Joanie) Hoff, Jerry (Shawnna) Hoff, Terry Hoff and H Herbert C. Hoff Jr., all of Punta Gorda.; a sister, Grace (Derwin) Edgeman of Live Oak, Fla.; mother of his children, Dora Hoff of Punta Gorda; a dear friend, Doris Bertrand of Port Charlotte; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, at First Baptist Church of Charlotte Harbor. Services, with the Rev. John E. Fuoss officiating, will follow.

Walter H. Haunsz

Walter H. Haunsz, 91, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Oct. 8, 2001, at Life Care Center of Punta Gorda.

He moved to this area in 1956 from Warsaw, Ind. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Philip and Louise (Wieland) Haunsz. He was a retired railway express agent and a farmer.

Walter will be greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, Lucile (Bell) Haunsz.

Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Frances Eddy

Mildred Frances Eddy, 88, of Plymouth, Mich., formerly of Englewood, Fla., died Oct. 8, 2001, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, Mich.

She was born Nov. 12, 1912 in Southport, Ind. Mrs. Eddy came to the Plymouth community in 1997 from Englewood. Previously she lived in Ferndale, Mich. from 1934 until 1975. She was a member of Newburg United Methodist Church, Livonia, Mich., and also of Englewood United Methodist Church in Englewood. She was active with the Sunshine Senior Citizens and Lydia Circle at Newburg Church. Her hobbies consisted of sewing, quilting, needlepoint and crafts. She was a wonderful cook and especially enjoyed family gatherings.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn (Mack) Gaut of Plymouth; grandchildren, Martin (Tracy) Gaut of South Lyon, Mich., Mark Gaut of Canton, Mich. and Monica (Jeffery) Darling of Sterling Heights, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Hannah Gaut of South Lyon; brothers, Allen Wilson of Ormond Beach, Fla. and Orville Wilson of Altoona, Fla.; and sisters, Margaret Burke of Greenwood, Ind. and Marian Dillon of Terra Haute, Ind. Mrs. Eddy was preceded in death by her husbands, James Eddy and Paul Reagin; her son, Robert Reagin; her brother, Robert Wilson, and sister, Betty Van Treese.

Visitation with family begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Newburg United Methodist Church, 36500 Ann Arbor Trail, Livonia, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions made to Newburg United Methodist Church would be appreciated. Arrangements are by Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, Plymouth.

Charles W. Taylor

Charles Whitcomb Taylor, 90, of Fort Ogden, Fla., passed away on Oct. 6, 2001, at Integrated Health Services of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Charles was born Nov. 14, 1910 in West Swanzey, N.H., and moved with his family to Blue Island, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, in 1952. He came to Fort Ogden in 1979. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in Europe and was a life member of the VFW. While in Chicago, Charles worked for Westmont Engineering as a millwright and also had the privilege of working on the Sears Tower. He was a life member of the Carpenter's Union and an active member of Fort Ogden United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees during the past 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Whitcomb Taylor and Bessie Mae Patnode Taylor; three sisters, Vera Pellitere, Vena Ticha and Rachael Walters; and a brother, Carl W. Taylor. Charles was also preceded by two beloved great-grandchildren, Andrew and Abigail Waden.

Charles will be missed by his devoted wife of 59 years, Ruth Rumrill Taylor; five daughters, Joanne (Albert) Clow, Bessie (Bob) Hands, Barbara (Bob) Reich, Marsha Staley and Mary (Fred) McGunnigall; 12 grandchildren, Earl, Albert Jr., Paula, Wayne, and Charles Clow, Christine Waden, Robert and Rodger Reich, Katherine Staley, Kathleen, Kelly, and Kristine McGunnigal; and 8 great-grandchildren, Duke, Donald, Denny, and Deandra Clow, Madilene Clow, Zachary Clow, and Kamryn and Berlyn Reich.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Fort Ogden United Methodist Church. The family has asked for donations to Fort Ogden United Methodist Church or a favorite charity. Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice Edith Aupperlee of Englewood, Fla., died Oct. 6, 2001. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte, Fla.

James Heerman

James Heerman, 65, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Oct. 3, 2001. Arrangements by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Katie Hohn

Katie Hohn, 66, of Englewood, Fla., died Oct. 1, 2001. Arrangements by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Evelyn Aldridge

Evelyn Aldridge, 71, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at her residence.

Born June 7, 1930 in Chicago, Ill., Evelyn moved to this area 15 years ago from Joliet, Ill., where she resided for 55 years. She was an avid bowler and belonged to the 600 & 700 Club, the Ladies Auxiliary Moose Lodge 300 of Joliet, Ill., the Port Charlotte Women's Bowling Association, and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary of Lockport, Ill.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 45 years, Laroy Aldridge Sr.; three sons, William Joseph (Patti) Davis of Joliet, Ill., Richard Dean (Chris) Davis of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Laroy (Caryn) Aldridge Jr. of Joliet, Ill.; five daughters, Pamela Jean Frain of Phoenix, Ariz., Sandra Lynn (Harold) Coleman of Port Charlotte, Linda Fay (Bill) Aldridge-Scharringhausen of Des Plaines, Ill., Sueanna Lee (David) Smith of New Lenox, Ill., and Anna Marie (Tom) Aldridge-Rossom of Plainfield, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel, with funeral services on Wednesday at 10 a,m, in the Chapel of Roberson Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Carlson officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 21475, St. Petersburg, FL 33742.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.
