David L. Fuller Jr.

David Lee Fuller Jr., 22, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at his residence.

He was born May 31, 1979, in Port Charlotte and was a lifelong resident. He was an apprentice electrician and a graduate of the New Challenge School of Port Charlotte. He was a member of Cayo Costa Island Partnership. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and racing at the Charlotte BMX track.

He is survived by his mother, Jean S. Pearson of North Port, Fla.; his father, David L. Fuller Sr. of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two sisters, Kelly Vowell of Port Charlotte and Amy Fuller of Punta Gorda; a brother, Daniel Fuller of Port Charlotte; paternal grandmother, Virginia Williams of Englewood, Fla.; paternal grandfather, Carl Fuller of Honduras; and his maternal grandmother, Gwen Bregel of Winston Salem, N.C.

There are no planned services at this time. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Virginia Martin

Virginia Martin, 82, of Charlotte, N.C., died July 16, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Martin was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Ames, Iowa, a daughter of the late Henry Frank McLaughlin and Mae McLaughlin and had retired from NationsBank, after 30 years of service. She was a beloved mother and grandmother who added joy to every life she touched and those who knew her were thankful for the opportunity to be her friend.

Surviving are her children, Sally M. Lewis, William H. Martin Jr., Stephen D. Martin, Mary M. Walters and Charles H. Martin; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia Huntley of Des Moines, Iowa; and a brother, Robert Douglas McLaughlin of Porterville, Calif.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. July 19 at Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. July 18, at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel. Entombment will be in Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends are invited to the home of a granddaughter, Karen Aumiller, Mint Hill, following the services July 19.

Joseph F. Smith

Joseph F. Smith, 76, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died on July 16, 2001, at his residence.

Born March 11, 1925, in Lebanon, N.H., he moved to Port Charlotte 15 years ago from Milford, Conn. He was a truck driver with United Parcel Service for many years before retiring. He was a member of the American Cribbage Congress, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8203 of North Port, Deep Creek Elks Lodge 2763 of Port Charlotte and the American Legion Post 110 of Port Charlotte. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Eleanore L. Smith of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Sharon Plante of Huntington, Conn., and Debbie Wells of West Haven, Conn.; a son, David K. Hartford of Milford, Conn.; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. The Rev. J. Ralph Burton, Jr. will officiate. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3659 Maguire Blvd., Orlando, FL 32803. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte.

Robert Alton Chamberlain

Robert Alton "Skeet" Chamberlain, 54, of Buckhead, Ga., died June 30, 2001, at his residence.

He was born May 1, 1947, in Brattleboro, Vt. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Chamberlain lived in Florida for 26 years before moving to Buckhead in 1996. He owned and operated the family marina in Florida and worked for a local marina for four years. He was a member of the American Motorcycle Association for the past 21 years and a life member of the North American Hunting Club.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Judi Lynn Chamberlain of Buckhead; a son, Johnny Alton Chamberlain and fiancee, Trisha Post of Englewood, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Christy Lynn and Jeff Hurley of Jacksonville, Fla.; granddaughters, Bailey Ann Chamberlain of Englewood and Cassandra Pearl Hurley of Jacksonville; grandson, Justin Tyler Chamberlain of Englewood; mother and father, Pearl Chamberlain and Philip L. Chamberlain of Englewood; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Donald Astely of Putney, Vt.; a brother-in-law, Phil LaFlam of Midway, Ga.; step-grandchildren, Breanna Clements and Timothy Clements Jr. of Englewood.

Graveside services for Mr. Chamberlain were conducted July 5, at the Swords Cemetery in Morgan County, Ga. with John Winterhawk officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Vista Care Hospice or to the American Cancer Society. Ivy Hill Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jean W. Lanning

Jean W. Lanning, 81, of Englewood, Fla., passed away July 14, 2001, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Englewood.

Mrs. Lanning was born Dec. 10, 1919, in Detroit, Mich. to Donald G. and Edith Louise (Woodward) Leith. She was a graduate of Brighton High School, class of 1937 and a life member (over 60 years) and Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Stars, Brighton Chapter No. 372. Following retirement, Jean and her husband, Ray came to Englewood in 1979 from Brighton, Mich. In addition to being a loving wife and mother to her family, she was a member of Community Presbyterian Church and a volunteer cook with Englewood Meals On Wheels for more than seven years. Mrs. Lanning was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are sons, David A. (Diantha) Lanning of Englewood, Dean A. (Cindi) Lanning of Waynesboro, N.C.; daughter, Patricia R. "Patti" Middleton of Port Charlotte, Fla.; brothers, Dr. Robert (Jean) Leith of Denton, Texas, Thomas (Audrey) and Donald (Geraldine) Leith, both of Brighton, David (Patricia) Leith of Englewood; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a host of friends, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond W. Lanning in 1996 and sons, Donnie in 1938, and Douglas in 1999.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. July 18, and 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. July 19, at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel. The funeral service will be at the funeral home following the visitation at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jennifer L. Turick, pastor of Community Presbyterian Church, officiating. Private inurnment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jean's memory to Englewood Meals On Wheels, P.O. Box 782, Englewood, FL 34295.

Josephine T. Cutler (Marconi)

Josephine T. Cutler (Marconi), 75, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Mantua, N.J., died Friday, July 13, 2001, in Port Charlotte after a long illness.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and was a graduate of Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. Mrs. Cutler was an employee of Columbia Records, Woodbury-Glassboro Rd., Pitman, N.J., for over 22 years. She was a volunteer for Deborah Heart & Lung Foundation in Port Charlotte.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Cutler of Port Charlotte; son, Richard Marconi of Franklinville, N.J.; daughters, Jacqueline McDonald of Mantua, N.J., and Bobbi Groves of Mullica Hill, N.J.; three sisters, Gloria Hahn of Wayne, Pa., Florence Lanni of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Diane Evans of Rockledge, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A viewing will be held Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Dubois Funeral Home in Audobon N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Mt. Ephraim, N.J. Internment will be at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden N.J.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Deborah Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 820, Browns Mills, N.J. 08015.

William H. Strodtman

William H. Strodtman, 87, of North Port, Fla., passed away Saturday, July 14, 2001.

He was born July 16, 1913, in Indianapolis, Ind., and had lived in North Port since 1978. He was a member of the North Port Community United Church of Christ and a member of the Jockey Club.

Mr. Strodtman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Strodtman; three daughters, Marilyn VanSlyke of North Port, Judith (David) Limbach of Mooresville, Ind., and Billie Jane Steenvergen of Indianapolis; a son, Timothy (Phyllis) Strodtman of Indianapolis; two sisters-in-law, Irma Shipley and Lucy Rollings, and a brother-in-law, Danny Uberto, all of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Stirling-Gerber Funeral Home in Indianapolis and burial will take place in Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the North Port Community United Church of Christ, 3450 South Biscayne Drive, North Port. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church.

The family is being served locally by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Punta Gorda, Fla.

W.W. Baer Jr.

W.W. "Bugs" Baer Jr., 78, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Three Lakes, Wis., died July 10, 2001, at his home in Three Lakes.

Bugs was born July 6, 1923 in Geneva, N.Y. to Helen Millerd Baer and William Whitaker Baer. He married Anne Fraser Dec. 3, 1949, in Quincy, Mass. Bugs grew up in Winnetka, Ill., where he graduated from New Trier High School in 1941. He attended Amherst College, Amherst, Mass., where he participated on the swimming and track teams. In 1942, Bugs volunteered for the American Field Service (AFS) where he was assigned to the British 8th Army and served during the North African and Italian campaigns as an ambulance driver during World War II. He was twice awarded a "Mention in Dispatches" commendation by the British Army. Bugs joined Caltex Oil Corp. and had a 23-year career as a sales and marketing executive -- including postings in the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Tanzania -- before retiring in 1984. He was a Punta Gorda resident for 17 years, and his family has been Three Lakes summer residents for more than 60 years. He enjoyed traveling, tennis, fishing and bird-watching.

Survivors include his wife, Anne; a son, Scott (Colleen) of Palatine, Ill.; a daughter, Linda (Dave Kjelstrom) of Wausau, Wis.; and grandsons, Scott Baer Jr. and Sean Baer, also of Palatine.

Memorial services will be conducted July 14 at St. Mary's of the Snow Episcopal Church, Eagle River, Wis. Interment will be at Three Lakes Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Peace River Wildlife Center, Punta Gorda. Arrangements are by Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home, Eagle River.

Michael A. Broadwater

Michael A. Broadwater, 45, died July 10, 2001.

He served two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Stewart, Ga. He moved to Florida in 1967 from his hometown of Coshocton, Ohio. He was an avid fan of the Budweiser Car No. 8, Dale Earnartdt Jr. and a big Buccaneer Fan. He was a roofer for 25 years.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael T. Broadwater.

He is survived by his loving wife, Tammy B.; a son, Michael F. Broadwater; three step-sons, Joshua and Justin Smich and Ronald Lorenz; his loving parents, Bill and Helen Broadwater of Port Charlotte; three sisters, D. Ball of Chandler Ariz., Diana Wood of Tustin Mich., and Diedra Vanskiver of Port Charlotte; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews of Michigan, Tennessee and Florida; and many caring and loving friends.

He will be sadly and deeply missed. A memorial gathering will be at the family home on Sunday. Friends are invited to arrive any time after 2 p.m. with the celebration of Life at 5 p.m.

Michael A. Broadwater

In loving memory of Michael A. Broadwater, who died on July 10, 2001.

He was 45 years of age. He served in the U.S. Army for two years at Fort Stewart, Ga. He moved to Florida in 1967 from his hometown of Coshocton, Ohio. He was an avid fan of the Budweiser Car No. 8, Dale Earnhart Jr. and a big Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan. He was a roofer for 25 years.

He also leaves behind his loving parents, Bill and Helen Broadwater of Port Charlotte, Fla.; three sisters, Diana Ball of Chandler, Ariz., Debra Wood of Tustin, Mich.; and Diedra Vanskiver of Port Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews of Michigan, Tennessee and Florida. He also leaves many caring and loving friends. He will be sadly and deeply missed.

A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, July 15, at Mike and Tammy's home. Friends are invited to arrive anytime after 2 p.m. A celebration of life will be at 5 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established for the family at Charlotte State Bank, (941) 255-9400. Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel is handling all arrangements.

Elizabeth T. Wavrinevich

Elizabeth Theresa Wavrinevich was called to eternal life with the Lord on July 12, 2001, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born to Vincenzo and Louise Grieco in Wilmington, Del., where she lived until 1985. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper in Wilmington and was involved in management of several small businesses.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Nicholas T. Wavrinevich, who died in 1998; a brother, Mauro Grieco, and three sisters, Josephine Hess, Rose Silfies and Florence Grieco. Survivors include brothers, James (Alby) Grieco of Wilmington and Eugene (Edith) Grieco of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, Virginia (John) Macko of Wilmington; nephews, Joseph (JerriLynn) Silfies Jr. and Michael Grieco of Wilmington; nieces, Jeanne Hess and Jane (Richard) Hermann of Wilmington, and Louisa (Hal) Donovan of St. Louis; and many grandnephews and grandnieces.

Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today, July 14, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2500 Easy St., Port Charlotte, with the Rev. Tom Wentland officiating. Burial will be in Charlotte Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Mrs. Wavrinevich requested memorial donations go to the American Heart Association, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte, or to San Antonio Catholic Church in Port Charlotte. Funeral arrangements by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda.

Clara Mae Venherm

Clara Mae Venherm, 69, of Acworth, Ga., died July 12, 2001.

Mrs. Venherm was an active member of the senior citizens of Woodstock, Ga. She lived in Englewood, Fla. for 17 years. From there she moved to Dothan, Ala. for 22 years, and has resided in Acworth for the last two and a half years.

She is survived by a son, Robert Venherm Sr. and his wife, Carol, of Englewood; daughters, Marjorie McIntire and her husband, Gordon, of Acworth, Deborah Bass, and Jacqueline Davids and husband, Ronnie, all of Englewood, Nancy Rosales and her husband, Joseph, of Dothan, Barbara Brown and husband, Michael, of Englewood; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted July 16 at Englewood Church of the Nazarene, 404 Green St., Englewood.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the hospice organization of your choice. Arrangements are by Cremation Society of Georgia.

Wanda J. Johnson

Wanda J. Johnson, 64, of Arcadia, Fla., and formerly of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away unexpectedly July 11.

She was born at Fort Myers Beach, Fla., and was a secretary with the DeSoto County School Board for many years.

Wanda is survived by her loving family, her husband, Richard; mother, Bonnie Knapp of North. Fort Myers; four daughters, Melody (Mark) Wood of North Fort Myers, Tamala (Craig) Helmer of Cape Coral, Shelly Blakeman of Sarasota, and Penny Decker of Tampa; a brother, R. Wayne (Dorothy) Boyette of Cape Coral; a sister, Bette (John) Vice of Oneonta, Ala.; five grandchildren, Corey Wood, Courtney, Casey, Abbey Decker and Bryce Helmer.

Private funeral services will be conducted with cremation to follow. North Fort Myers Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, Tampa, Fla.

William D. Griffin

William D. Griffin, 74, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 8, 2001. He was born April 5, 1927, in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., and moved to this area in January of 1990 from Dumont, N.J.

Mr. Griffin was a retired Senior Corp. Tax Manager for American Cynamid in Wayne, N.J. He was a member of the Elks, Eagles, American Legion and the Sons of American Legions all in Port Charlotte. He served in the Army Intelligence Division during World War II.

Survivors include one daughter, Michelle Spencer of Des Moines, Iowa; one son, David Griffin of Port Charlotte; and five grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of S.W. Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arrangements are by the National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.
