Harold R. Livingston

Harold R. Livingston, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte.

He was born April 28, 1917, in Rockford, Ill., and moved to Port Charlotte from Peoria, Ill. 18 years ago. He was a retired accountant for Hiram-Walker Distillery of Peoria.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis E. Livingston of Port Charlotte; two sons, Gary L. Livingston of Peoria and Wayne D. (Connie) Livingston of Longwood, Fla.; a brother, Jack Livingston of Rockford; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Restlawn Chapel. The Rev. James R. Kuse of Port Charlotte United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation Inc., 1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-1494. Arrangements by Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel.

Cody Ryan Pyburn

Cody Ryan Pyburn, infant son of Kathryn L. Spencer and Thomas Pyburn, both of Port Charlotte, Fla., died on Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Bon Secour-St. Joseph Hospital.

He is also survived by his grandparents, Carl and Bobbie Kinney of Port Charlotte; grandmother, Diane Spencer of Port Charlotte; great-grandmother, Nellie Hawkins of Satsuma, Fla.; and his great-grandfather, Calvin Hawkins of Lupton, Mich.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda, Fla., with the Rev. Adam B. Rackliffe officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Gregory Allen Welker

Gregory Allen Welker, 48, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Arcadia, Fla., died July 4, 2001, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was born July 13, 1952 in Huntington, W.Va. He moved to Port Charlotte five years ago from Hollywood, Fla. Mr. Welker was a retail merchandiser, setting up displays for Advance Retail Merchandising.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Welker, Port Charlotte; two sons, Jeremiah Welker and Joshua Welker, both of Pompano Beach, Fla.; one brother, Gary (Sharon) Welker of Arcadia; one sister, Linda Morrow, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; his father and mother, Linville and Carolyn Welker of Miramar, Fla.; and a host of family and friends.

A memorial service will be offered at 11 a.m. July 7, at the Robarts Funeral Home Chapel, 163 N. Brevard Ave., Arcadia, with Chaplain Larry Pope officiating.

The family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association, 703 W. Gibson St., Arcadia, FL 34266.

Merle L. Drawantz

Merle Louise Drawantz, 97, of Rotonda West, Fla., and formerly of Englewood, Fla., passed away July 9, 2001, at her residence in Sterling House, Rotonda West.

Mrs. Drawantz was born on April 6, 1904, in Fon du Lac County, Wis., to Everett and Mary Ann (Irwin) Loop. She was employed with Hamilton Beach Corp. in Racine, Wis. for more than 30 years, retiring as an inspector. She and her husband, Ervin, moved from Racine in 1964 to Englewood. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Lemon Bay Woman's Club, OES Englewood Chapter No. 300, BPO DOES Drove No. 203 and a founding member of the Englewood Helping Hands.

Surviving is her daughter, Marlene Derrah and her husband, Lawrence, of Englewood; grandchildren, Jill (Brent) Goodermont of Minneapolis, Minn., Lawrence J. Derrah III of Racine and great-grandson, Lawrence J. Derrah IV. Mrs. Drawantz was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin, in 1994.

There will be no local services. Graveside services will be conducted at Ladoga Cemetery, Ladoga, Wis., at a later date.

Memorials may be made in Merle's memory to Faith Lutheran Church, 551 Rotonda Blvd. W., Rotonda West, FL 33947; or to a charity of your choice. Lemon Bay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Catherine Butkis

Catherine Butkis, 94, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, July 6, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 23, 1906 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and moved to Port Charlotte in 1975 from New York City. Daughter of Peter and Nallie Berkey, she was the last surviving member of the Berkey family. Two loving husbands who were both New York City police officers preceded her in death. John Erickson died in 1966 and Theodore Butkis died in 1978. Catherine lived on Easy Street in Port Charlotte until 1997. The last few years she has lived at Ann and Chuck Roney's ALF. There she was given the very best of care. She enjoyed living in a home with a family atmosphere that she happily shared with other residents and a loving staff. She was of the Lutheran faith. Catherine was a very special lady who touched the hearts and lives of every person she ever met. She will always be remembered for her wit, charm and grace. All who knew her loved her.

She is survived by loving friends, Joyce Potnick of Punta Gorda, Ann and Chuck Roney, Kathy Knatz, Mimi Powell, Annie Spencer and Dorothy Lyle, all of Port Charlotte, and all the residents at the Roney ALF who loved her.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. The Rev. J. Ralph Burton Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Marjorie M. Horsman

Marjorie M. Horsman passed away suddenly at home on July 1, 2001.

Marge was born in 1916 in New York City and later moved to Salisbury, Md., where she began her long professional career. Starting as a telephone operator, she rose through the ranks at AT&T and, after 42 years of dedicated service, retired to Punta Gorda. During her golden years, Marge served many hours as a volunteer at the Charlotte Regional Medical Center. Her strong family commitment, love of travel, caring generosity and "can-do" attitude will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Marge will be greatly missed by her beloved husband of 52 years, Walter; her daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Robert Sanborn of Canada; granddaughter, Marianne McDaniel; and great-granddaughter, Casey McDaniel of Maryland.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 9, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Charlotte Regional Medical Center Volunteers in Marge's name would be deeply appreciated.

Interment will take place in Salisbury at a later date, following a memorial gathering of family and lifelong friends.

William Mackie

William Mackie, 98, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at I.H.S. of Port Charlotte.

He was born Aug. 11, 1902 in Eureka, S.C. and moved to Port Charlotte in 1991 from Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y. He was retired from the toy manufacturing business. Mr. Mackie was a Baptist.

He is survived by two sons, George Mackey and Herbert Mackey, both of Port Charlotte; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time on Tuesday, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. Pastor Craig Canfield of the Community Life Center of Port Charlotte will officiate. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Dorothy Shine

Dorothy Shine, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 6, 2001.

She was born Feb. 5, 1917 in Fostoria, Ohio to Richard and Nellie Adams. She moved to Port Charlotte in 1981 from Fostoria. Mrs. Shine was an educator and counselor, retiring from the Fostoria school system after 39 years of service. She was a past member of Alpha Delta Kappa and the Altrusa Club in Fostoria. Mrs. Shine was a member of First Christian Church in Fostoria. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women, the Women's Club in Port Charlotte, and a former member of the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club and the Port Charlotte Yacht Club. She graduated from Fostoria High School in 1935 and received a master's degree in English from Bowling Green State University. She married Howard Shine on June 4, 1942 and he predeceased her in 1977. She then married Meredith (Les) Cramer in 1981 and he died in 1991.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharla Shine of Fostoria; and a companion, David Stein of Port Charlotte and Celina, Ohio.

Memorial services will be conducted at a later date in Fostoria.

Frances E. Snyder

Frances E. Snyder, 96, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 6, 2001, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Care Center in Port Charlotte.

She was born Dec. 28, 1904 in Washington, Ind. and came to this area 24 years ago from Toledo, Ohio. She was a homemaker and attended First Alliance Church in Port Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva F. Snyder, in 1987.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley R. Stewart (Richard); grandson, James Stewart (Judy); and great-grandsons, Rick and Randy Stewart, all of Oregon, Ohio.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 9, at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Henry D. Pietrasiak

Henry Dominick Pietrasiak, 77, of Englewood (Sarasota County), Fla., died July 5, 2001, in Englewood.

He was born Jan. 26, 1924 in Cambridge, Mass. to Dominick and Josephine (Suskie) Pietrasiak. He moved to the Englewood area in 1982, coming from Southboro, Mass. He was a retired sergeant with the Southboro Police Department after serving there 30 years. He was a member of VFW Post 10178, Council of the Blind and St. Raphael's Catholic Church, all in Englewood. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes; three daughters, Jeane Bruen of Gross Pointe, Mich., Rose Pietrasiak of Southboro, and Ann Satir of Amesbury, Mass.; one son, Henry Jr. of Shrewsbury, Mass.; one sister, Joanne Cunningham of Marlboro, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, July 9, at the Englewood Chapel of Lemon Bay Funeral Homes. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Englewood. Burial will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood. Lemon Bay Funeral Homes, Englewood Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Anna Hammons

Lois Anna Hammons, 82, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away July 6, 2001 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born Dec. 3, 1918 in Jacksonville, Fla. and had lived in Arcadia for the past 70 years. Lois was a homemaker and a member of Arcadia First Baptist Church. Lois was a good Christian mother. She loved everyone and was loved by everyone in return.

Lois was predeceased by her husband, Charles Franklin Hammons on Dec. 17, 1980.

Survivors are her daughter, Hazel M. (Bill) Bowden of Arcadia; three grandchildren, Lance Bliss and Lorena R. Mills, both of Arcadia, and Charles H. Bowling of Moorehaven, Fla.; four great grandchildren, Melissa Bliss, Racheal Mills and David Mills, all of Arcadia, and Desiree Bowling of Moorehaven.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 9, at the Ponger-Kays-Grady Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Arcadia First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bert Galloway officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Arcadia. Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Plank

Robert Plank, 81, of Englewood, Fla., died July 1, 2001.

He was born March 7, 1920 in Grand Rapids, Mich. to William and Victoria (Weber) Plank. He came to this area in August 2000 from Grand Rapids. Robert worked as a welder.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Susan Ten Elshof of Englewood; and many stepchildren and grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

James Murray McCoy

James Murray McCoy, 74, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Wednesday, July 4, in Punta Gorda.

Mr. McCoy was born in Madison, Wis. on Aug. 6, 1926. He had resided in Punta Gorda for the past five and a half years, moving here from Madison. Mr. McCoy had been a book buyer for University Book Stores in Madison for 45 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of VFW Post No. 110, Port Charlotte, Fla., and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving on the USS Katima in the South Pacific.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Therese M. McCoy of Punta Gorda; two daughters, Mary (William) McCoy-Wall, Beaver Creek, Ohio and Colleen (Rick) DeRosa of Madison; three sons, Michael (Kathy) McCoy of Winneconne, Wis., Andrew D. (Karen) McCoy and Thomas G. (Maryanne) McCoy, both of Madison; three sisters, Agnes Post of Madison, Kathleen (Howie) Holmes of Milwaukee, Wis., and Betty O'Brien of Indianapolis, Ind.; and six grandchildren.

Local memorial services will be held at a later date in the fall.

Capt. Charles O. Borgstrom Jr.

Capt. Charles O. "Charlie" Borgstrom Jr., 72, USN (retired), of Punta Gorda, Fla., died July 2, 2001, at his home.

He was born June 23, 1929, in Boston, Mass., to Charles O. Sr. and Theresa O'Brien Borgstrom. He came to this area in 1977 from Ballston Lake, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years, having served in numerous air squadrons and on board many ships, acquiring more than 6,000 hours of flight time in all types of aircraft, airships and helicopters while serving in almost every area of the world. He served from 1958-1960 as the HS-6, ASW and Aviation Safety Officer, including a WESTPAC CRUISE, on board the USS Kearsarge. He served with the Air Development Squadron Six from 1965-1966 in Antarctica, where Mount Borgstrom was named for him. He was a graduate from both the Naval War College and the Naval Postgraduate School, holding a degree in political science and international affairs. He attended graduate school at George Washington University in 1970-71, while attending the senior course at the Naval War College. During 1972-74, he served as director of the Naval Command College, a Senior Service College for Senior Foreign Officers from around the world. He then served as Commander of Navy Recruiting for Area One from 1974-76, supervising efforts of more than 1,000 navy recruiting personnel in the Northeast United States, plus overseas operations in Europe and Africa. He had received many awards and decorations.

He was the founder and president emeritus of Isles Realty of Punta Gorda; founder of the Suncoast Navy League; a founding organizer and trustee of the Punta Gorda Elks Lodge No. 2606; member of the Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte/North Port Association of Realtors; founding member of the PGI Civic Association; founding member of the Charlotte Harbor Chapter of the Retired Officers Association; and numerous other professional, fraternal and volunteer service associations. He was designated "Realtor of the Year" in 1982, and was selected by the local chamber of commerce as "Businessman of the Month" on several occasions. He was also awarded the prestigious "Franz Ross County Man of the Year" for Charlotte County.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth G. (Locke) Borgstrom of Punta Gorda; daughters, Karen Conti of Arlington, Va., Kathy Hinga of Punta Gorda, Carol DeStefano of Punta Gorda, and Christine Robison of Winter Park, Fla.; a sister, Alyce Downing of Sandwich, Mass.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 6, at Kays-Ponger Royal Palms Funeral Home, 635 Marion Ave., Punta Gorda. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, at Sacred Heart Church, 211 W. Charlotte Ave., Punta Gorda. Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238, will be appreciated.
