Anthony R. Hren

Anthony R. Hren, 75, of Englewood, Fla., died June 19, 2001.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1925, in Steelton, Pa., and came to this area in 1994 from Harrisburg, Pa. He was a chiropractor. Mr. Hren was a life member and a past commander of the VFW Post No. 701 in Steelton and a member of the St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine; a son, Michael of Boston, Mass.; a step-son, Anthony Fischer of Camp Hill, Pa.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. June 27, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood.

Memorial donations may be made to either the American Cancer Society, South Sarasota County Unit, 2100 S. Tamiami Trail, Ste. B, Venice, FL 34293 or St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 770 Kilbourne Ave., Englewood, FL 34223. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Homes, Englewood Chapel.

John M. Michalski

John M. Michalski, 84, of Rotonda West, Florida, died June 19, 2001, at Englewood Community Hospital.

He was born June 23, 1916, in Dunellen, N.J., to Julius and Lotti (Kwiecinski) Michalski. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He worked for United Parcel Service as a millwright until retiring and he and his wife Helen came to Englewood in 1979 from Milwaukee, Wis. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 113, the Rotonda West Golf & Country Club and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; five nieces and three nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Peace of Gulf Pines Memorial Park Cemetery at 11 a.m. June 29, and inurnment will follow. Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel is in charge of cremation arrangements.

Thomas Schiro

Thomas Schiro, 81, of Englewood, Fla., died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the Hospice House in Venice, Fla.

Born on Feb. 4, 1920, in Manhattan, N.Y., to Nicholas and Conchetta (Lobue) Schiro, he had been a resident of Englewood for seven years, coming from Bronx, N.Y.

Mr. Schiro was a mason in the home construction industry. He was also employed by the Eastside Window Cleaners and later retired from Triangle Union Shop of Manhattan. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and was a communicant of St. Raphael Parish.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Anne (Vida) Schiro of Englewood; one son, Thomas (Susan) Schiro of Michigan City, Ind.; one niece, Joanne Panzini of Jackson Height, N.Y.; and one grandson, Joseph Vitale of Englewood.

A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 South McCall Road. A Mass of Christian burial will be said Monday, at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael Catholic Church with Father Morris Wells officiating.

A burial will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jessie Mae Pierce

Jessie Mae Pierce, 61, of Fort Ogden, Fla., passed away June 21, 2001, in Port Charlotte, Fla., at Fawcett Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Bradenton, Fla., Oct. 12, 1939, and was a life long resident of Fort Ogden. She was an agriculture farmer and loved the outdoors. Jessie was a member of the Peace River VFW Post No. 2824 Ladies Auxiliary, Arcadia, and a member of the Fort Ogden First Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Ted and Melisa (French) Hendry and also was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton E. Pierce.

She is survived by one sister, Grace Williams of Fort Ogden; two half-brothers, Alfred Reid of Parrish, Fla. and Hendrich Reid of North Florida.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 22, at the Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 N. Hillsborough Ave., Arcadia. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. June 23 at the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Jeff Hines officiating. Burial to follow in Fort Ogden Cemetery, Fort Ogden.

Orville C. Chossek

Orville C. Chossek, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Mariner Health Center of Port Charlotte, where he had been a resident for the past one-and-a-half years.

He was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Ingalls, Mich., the son of John and Mary Chossek. He enlisted in the Army in 1938, served 30 years, and attained the rank of warrant officer, retiring to Port Charlotte in 1968. He was stationed in several bases in the United States, along with tours of duty in South America, Japan and Germany, serving in the counterintelligence branch of the Army. He married Rita Morin of Providence, R.I., on Dec. 7, 1942, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dagget, Mich. Orville was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Elks Club, all of Port Charlotte.

Orville leaves behind his sister, Marion Peters of Carson City, Nev.; sister-in-law, Clara Chossek of Port Washington, Wis.; nephews, Walter and James Chossek of Milwaukee, Wis.; niece, Margaret Graham of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; cousins, Ruth (Wangerin) Hendra of Ishpeming, Mich., and Punta Gorda, Fla., Evelyn (Wangerin) Winter of Delaware, Ohio, and Karen (Wangerin) Gravenkamp of Milwaukee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, in 1998.

There will be no services. Orville will be interred next to his wife at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Capt. Ronald Goodman

Capt. Ronald Goodman, 64, U.S. Army (Ret.) of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Thursday, June 19, 2003, after a short bout with lung cancer. Capt. Goodman was a decorated career Army officer. He was awarded two Silver Stars and a Purple Heart for action against the enemy in the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth of Punta Gorda; one son, Scott Goodman and one daughter, Christy (Tony) Passarelli, both of Denver, Colo.; one granddaughter, Daniella; his mother, Dixie Goodman; and sister, Mary Jane (Eldon) Korf of Yuma, Colo.

Capt. Goodman's body was cremated according to his wishes. The family will receive condolences at SHIVA from June 20 through June 22 at 1205 Pine Siskin Drive, Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa or a charity of your choice.

Alice A. Hardy

Alice Ann Hardy, 63, of Cocoa, Fla., and formerly of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2003.

She was born Jan. 6, 1940, in Montgomery, Ala., the daughter of Richard and Irene (Conley) Pruett. She was working as a dental assistant when she met and married her husband, David, who was in the Air Force. During their marriage, she was able to travel extensively, as he was stationed in Okinawa, Amsterdam and Spain. While they were living in Amsterdam, she began working as cashier in the commissary. Upon David's retirement, they moved to Rockledge, Fla., in September 1985 from Madrid, Spain. Ann joined the Wal-Mart team in Rockledge and was a customer service representative until 1995. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Alice will be greatly missed by her husband, David H. Hardy, CMS Ret.; sons, Maj. David H. (Leigh) Hardy Jr. of Newport News, Va., Maj. Carlos (Joy) Rice of Great Falls, Mont., and Juan (Kim) Santiago of Deltona, Fla.; brother, Richard L. Pruett of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Sabrina, Arielle, Tabitha, Stephanie and Jessica Hardy, Kevin, Miranda, Christopher and Alex Rice and Isabella Santiago; 16 nieces and nephews; and her caregivers, Susie, Karen and Bev.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Francis.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda. The service in celebration of Alice's life will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Geraldine F. Ingratta

Geraldine Florence Ingratta, 73, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in Port Charlotte.

She was born in Elmhurst, Ill. She has been in Port Charlotte for five years coming from Chicago, Ill. Geraldine was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

Geraldine is survived by her son, Don Ingratta of Chicago; daughter, Sandra Noland of Port Charlotte; grandchildren, Dwayne (Melanie) Noland of Port Charlotte, Matt, Becky and Christopher Ingratta, all of Chicago; and niece, Darlene Lighthouser of Chicago.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Geraldine's name to American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

Arthur Lewis

Arthur Lewis, 80, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla.

He was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Hazard, Ky., to the late Chester and Ida Lewis. He was a former tool and die maker. Arthur moved from Dayton, Ohio, to Fort Myers 30 years ago, and from Fort Myers to the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda area 20 years ago. He was an active member of Church of God-Fort Ogden in Fort Ogden, Fla., and helped build Souls Harbour Church of God in Punta Gorda. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Mildred L. Lewis; two sons, James E. Lewis of Dalzell, S.C., and Ronald L. Lewis of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Marti Caskey and Willene Wooten, both of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Robin A. Lewis of Fort Myers; a brother, the Rev. James R. Lewis of Somerset, Ky.; two sisters, Ernestine Perris of Virginia Beach, Va., and Earlene Chance of Dayton; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at Souls Harbour Church of God, Punta Gorda, with the Rev. Johnie Morgan of Church of God-Fort Ogden officiating. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda chapel.

Nair M. Puleo

Nair M. Puleo, 63, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla.

She was born May 23, 1940, in Argentina and moved to Port Charlotte six years ago from Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a retired preschool teacher. She was a member of Community Life Center in Port Charlotte. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be missed by all.

She is survived by her loving husband, Antonino Puleo of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Jacqueline H. Passeggiata of Dix Hills, N.Y., and Claudia E. Nicolosi of Port Charlotte; three sisters, Consuelo Mendez of Brazil, Querine Molinari of Lido Beach, N.Y., and Emma Grippi of Queens, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Felix O. Coyle of Community Life Center officiating. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

William Layport

William "Florida Gator" Layport, 33, of Arcadia, Fla., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in Sarasota, Fla.

He was born Aug. 23, 1969, in Wauchula, Fla. He had lived in Arcadia for eight years, coming from Michigan. He was a Baptist. Mr. Layport was a heavy equipment operator for John Bergsteiner Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Dottie; children, William Christopher, Floyd Stanley and Codey Charles; father, William Layport Sr. of Michigan; mother, Ethel Faye Johnson of Arcadia; two brothers, Stanley (Summer) Layport and Michael (Tammy) Johnson, all of Georgia; one sister, Teresa (Jody) Aldorman of Frostproof, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

Visitation is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, at Robarts Family Garden Chapel, Wauchula. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the chapel, with burial in Fort Green Baptist Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Robarts Family Funeral Home, Wauchula.

William A. McCracken

William Allan McCracken, 94, of Arcadia, Fla., died Thursday, June 19, 2003.

He was born May 24, 1909, in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. He moved to Arcadia in 1980 from Somers, Conn. He was a superintendent of schools in Somers for 15 years. He was a Rotarian for 40 years and attended Arcadia Rotary Club faithfully. He helped build the first U.S. Navy aircraft carrier and was on the carrier when it was launched. He was a member of The Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife, Alice L. McCracken of Arcadia; a daughter, Kathleen M. Beal of North Brooklin, Maine; and a son, William A. McCracken of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren, Dana Beal and Stacey Beal; and one great-grandchild, Kaitlin Beal.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, one hour prior to funeral services at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia. Burial will be in Pembroke Centre Cemetery, Pembroke, Mass.

Flowers or donations may be made to Arcadia Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1491, Arcadia, FL 34265.

M. Clay Nussbaum

M. Clay Nussbaum, 65, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Arcadia.

He was born May 10, 1938, in Leeton, Mo. He came to Arcadia three years ago from Warsaw, Mo. He was a concrete finisher for 45 years.

He is survived by a special friend, Betty Barrick of Arcadia; a mother, Stattie Nussbaum of Leeton; five brothers, Vernon L. Nussbaum of Warsaw, Curtis W. Nussbaum, Bobby L. Nussbaum and Verl Nussbaum, all of Leeton, and Harley D. Nussbaum of Orangeburg, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Cleatus Nussbaum.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Grace Lutheran Church, Arcadia, with the Rev. Theodore R. Hanus officiating.

Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Jessica L. Strachan

Jessica L. Strachan, 30, of Cape Coral, Fla., died June 6, 2001.

Jessica was born Jan. 12, 1971 in Fort Myers to Kenneth and Alicia (Dobson) Hicks. She was a licensed CNA for Allstate Home Health before working as a truck driver for the Charlotte Sun. She loved life, enjoyed people and made everyone, no matter their status, feel important.

Jessica is survived by her loving husband, Ricardo; parents, Ken and Alicia Hicks of Port Charlotte; brother, Jason Grose of Port Charlotte; grandfather, George W. Hicks of Port Charlotte; and aunt, Judith Dugan of Fort Myers.

A memorial service in celebration of Jessica's life will be held at 2 p.m. June 23, 2001 at Covenant Community Ministries 940 Tarpon St., Fort Myers.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Jessica's name has been established at the Charlotte Sun., P.O. Box 2390, Port Charlotte, FL 33949.
