Margaret E. Unser, 73, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at her residence.
She was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Jamaica, N.Y., and moved to Punta Gorda 11 years ago from Smithtown, N.Y. She was a retired office manager for Smithtown General Hospital. She attended Christ Community United Methodist Church of Harbour Heights, Fla.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond C. Unser of Punta Gorda; a daughter, Christine (Edmond) Dost of Smithtown; three sons, James R. (Linda) Unser of Yaphank, N.Y., Paul W. (Maureen) Unser of Smithtown and Bruce E. (Holly) Unser of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Roseanne Melucci of Setauket, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in Smithtown. Interment will be in Hauppauge Rural Cemetery, Hauppauge, N.Y. Local arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.
Billie M. Wilbas
Billie M. Wilbas, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away on June 2, 2001.
Mrs. Wilbas was born in St. Louis, Mo., on June 16, 1918. She was a homemaker in her own home. She moved to Florida in February of 1985 from St. Joseph, Mo. She was a member of Chapter GA P.E.O and she was a past member of First Presbyterian Church of St. Joseph, along with the Women's Association of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Roemer A. Wilbas of Port Charlotte; daughter, Carol K. Morris of Bluewater Bay, Fla.; and two sons, R.A. Wilbas Jr. of St. Louis, Mo., LTC Gary M. Wilbas, U.S. Air Force, of Florida;
and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Stickney of Florida; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
There will be no local services. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Homes, Port Charlotte.
Wesley K. Carhartt
Wesley K. Carhartt, 73, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Saturday, June 2, 2001 at his Charlotte County residence. Mr. Carhartt will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Mr. Carhartt was born Aug. 7, 1927 in Denver, Colo., to Forrest and Helen (Johnson) Carhartt. He was a U.S. Navy veteran for World War II. Wesley was owner/operator of Frederickson-Brown Insurance Agency in Canon City, Colo., and following retirement he served four years as a Fremont County Commissioner. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Canon City and active in many civic areas including the Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the School Board. He was also a member of the Myakka Pines Golf Course in Englewood.
Surviving is his loving wife of more than 50 years, Rose Mary (Ohlsen) Carhartt of Englewood; daughters, Elaine Reveley of Altadena, Calif., Carol Carlson of Seattle, Wash., and Diane Davis and Jane Dickerson, both of Englewood; brother, Andrew Carhartt of Boulder, Colo.; and grandchildren, Lynn Carlson, Eric Carlson, Laura Davis, Lana Dickerson, Colleen Reveley and Wes Dickerson.
A memorial gathering will be 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at Lemon Bay Park Recreation Center in the Community Room, 570 Bay Park Blvd., Englewood FL 34224. Inurnment will be in Colorado at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel.
Charles Alfred Cookman
Charles Alfred Cookman, 82, of Englewood, Fla., died June 1, 2001.
He was born Dec. 9, 1918 in Palmyra, N.Y., and moved to this area 24 years ago from Plattsburgh, N.Y. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was past president and active member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 717. He was a member of the Elks and a graduate of the Clinton Community College where he earned an associate's degree. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II, and the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a Methodist.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Cookman of Margate, Fla.; daughter, Donna Daniels of Englewood, Fla.; son-in-law, Michael P. Daniels of Englewood; sister, Ruth Scales of Rouses Point, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Betty Martin of Englewood; brother, Fay Martin of Manassas, Va.; two grandchildren, Matthew Daniels of Englewood and Laura Daniels of Plattsburgh, N.Y.

A. Florence Moffatt
A. Florence Moffatt, 95, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Englewood.
Mrs. Moffatt was born April 25, 1906, in Conneault, Ohio, to Albert J. and Alice C. (Sweet) Meredith. Florence was a homemaker, loving wife and mother, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn A. Fowler of Englewood, Fla.; and cousin, Sandi Armeni of Conneaut, Ohio.
There will be no local services; inurnment will be in Glennwood Cemetery, Conneaut. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel.
Richard Van Zandt Salembier Jr.
Richard Van Zandt Salembier Jr., 69, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Bon Secours-Venice Hospital, Venice, Fla.
Mr. Salembier was born Dec. 26, 1931, in Mineola, N.Y., to Richard V.Z. and Jessie Marjorie (Forester) Salembier Sr. He attended Fairfield Country Day School and Canterbury Preparatory School in Connecticut. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Infantry, and continued with his education, receiving bachelor's degrees in history and economics in 1954 from Hobart College, Geneva, N.Y. He began his financial career at a New York City brokerage firm and in 1969 he joined Liberty National Bank and Trust Co., in Buffalo, N.Y., as vice president and later senior vice president in charge of the bank's security division. In 1976, he relocated to Albany, N.Y., becoming a vice president and officer in charge of Central Portfolio Management of Norstar Bancorp. In 1986, he assumed responsibility for tax-free investments at a subsidiary of Norstar in Rochester, N.Y. Norstar merged with Fleet Bank (Rhode Island) and is now Fleet Boston Financial. Following retirement from Fleet Financial, Richard and his wife, Marilyn, moved in 1988 from New York State to Englewood, Fla.
Mr. Salembier was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and past president of the Buffalo chapter of Hobart Alumni Association. Professional affiliations included the American Institute of Banking, New York State Bankers' Association, Bond Club of New York City, and in Florida, the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 2378, Kiwanis Club and the Lemon Bay Conservancy, all in Englewood, Fla.
Surviving is his loving wife of 46 years, Marilyn J. (Hunter) Salembier of Englewood; son, Richard Van Zandt Salembier III and his wife, Christine of Williamsville, N.Y.; daughters, Danise E. Salembier of Keansburg, N.J., and Sharon Salembier of Albany; brother, Jeffrey Salembier of Monticello, Ga.; sisters, Yvonne Horelik of Baltic, Conn., Elaine Horelik of of New Canaan, Conn., Marjorie Hurley of Manchester, Vt., Diane Shoemaker of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Sandra Eskey of Delray Beach, Fla., and Sharon Lawson of Armonk, N.Y.; grandchildren, Russell and Rachel de Moose of Keansburg and Kendra Salembier of Buffalo.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel, with the funeral service following at noon at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Jennifer Turick, pastor of Community Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will be later in New York State. Israel "Izzy" Sherman
Israel "Izzy" Sherman, 91, of North Port, Fla., died June 2, 2001, in Port Charlotte.
Born December 8, 1909, in Providence, R.I., he moved to this area in 1986 from Cranston, R.I. He retired in 1973 as owner of Shermans Spa, a luncheonette, grocery store and ice cream parlor. He was a member of Farband Labor Zionist 41 B and Congregation Sons of Abraham in Providence.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bertha Sherman; sons, Jerome (Barbara) Sherman of Port Charlotte and Fred (Marion) Sherman of Johnston, R.I.; a daughter, Roberta Sherman of Granbury, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Sherman of Warwick, R.I.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Southport Nursing Care Center, Town Hall, Thursday at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.
Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.
Vera E. Workman
Vera E. Workman, 82, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Friday, June 1, 2001, following an extended illness at DeSoto Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Indianapolis, Ind., and has lived here since moving to Arcadia in 1986. She was secretary for the American Legion headquarters in Indianapolis, and retired from there before moving to Florida.
Mrs. Workman is survived by her husband of 54 years, John P. Workman of Arcadia; two daughters, Marvelle Robichaud of Indianapolis and Rita Bamford of Mooresville, Ind.; one son, Dale McClain of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Donna Stephens of Indianapolis and Lynda Green Hadley of Naples; two brothers, Allen Relford of Indianapolis and Ernie Relford; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda. Interment will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Yolanda "Ginger" Gray
Yolanda "Ginger" Gray, 78, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died May 29, 2001, in Punta Gorda.
She was born March 29, 1923, in Norristown, Pa. She moved to the area in 1991 from Chester County, Pa.
She is survived by her daughters, Gina Iacone of West Chester, Pa., Sandra Mitchell and Laurie Coventry-Payne, both of Punta Gorda; a sister, Ann Riccardi of Ambler, Pa.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held July 6, 2001 at 3 p.m. at St. Maximillian-Kolbe Catholic Church, Port Charlotte.
George O. Manninen
George O. Manninen, 76, of Lynnfield, Mass., and formerly of Peabody, Mass. and North Port, Fla., died May 26, 2001, at the Beverly Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Edith J. (Cook) Manninen of Lynnfield with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Peabody, he was the son of the late Sanrda (Lithonen) Manninen/Myllylahti and Emil Manninen. He was educated in Peabody schools and played football on the state championship 1941 football team. He graduated in 1942.
He entered the U.S.Navy in 1942, serving in World War II for three years prior to his discharge as a pharmacist's mate, first class.
Following his discharge, he was a salesman for 40 years with the Creamery Package Co., later named Crepaco and then St. Regis Paper Co. He worked in New England and the New York state area prior to his retirement in 1985.
An avid golfer, he was a member of the Andover Country Club in Maine and the Sable Trace Golf Club in North Port, Fla., where he resided for 10 years before moving back to Lynnfield.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sons, Frederick P. Manninen of Magnolia and George O. Manninen Jr. of Seabrook, N.H.; three daughters and sons-in-laws, Joyce M. (Bruce) Thayer of Newburyport, Judith A. (James) Partaledis of Lynnfield and Janet S. (Richard) Jodoin of Hanover, N.H,; two brothers, Richard Manninen of Salem, Ma. and John "Reno" Manninen of Ipswich, Ma.; a sister, Elsie Nordin of Lynn; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Esther Stone.

Guetano V. "Guy" Cucchiara
Guetano V. "Guy" Cucchiara, 73, of West Peabody, Ma., and Lake Suzy, Fla., died May 29 at his home in West Peabody after a year long illness.
Born and raised in Everett, Ma., he was the son of the late Alessandro and Maria Grace (Rinaldi) Cucchiara. He had resided in West Peabody for the past 42 years.
He had wintered in Lake Suzy for the past seven years. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army.
Upon his discharge, he was first employed in television service sales for five years. Later, he became the service manager for the Mel-O-Tone Vending Co. of Somerville for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1993.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and was a member of the St. Adelaide's Couples Club.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Irene, a former employee of the Peabody School Department; two daughters, Joyce (Joseph) Bongiorno of Peabody and Christine Cucchiara of Tyngsboro, Ma.; a brother, Orlando (Carol) Cucchiara of Chelsea, Ma.; a sister, Stella (Ed) Lafferty of Chelsea; three grandchildren, Daniel and Ashley Donovan and Tara Bongiorno; and a mother-in-law, Concetta Del Monico of Peabody.

Anthony DiNuzzo, 78, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, June 1, 2001 at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte.
He was born July 22, 1922 in Italy and moved to Port Charlotte in 1988 from Bronx, N.Y. He was a retired owner and operator of a dressmaking business. He was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church of Port Charlotte.
He is survived by a daughter, Theresa DiNuzzo of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; a son, Anthony DiNuzzo Jr. of Galveston, Texas; two grandchildren, David and Elise DiNuzzo, both of Galveston; one sister and one brother.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel, with a Catholic Wake Service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday 10:00, June 5, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church. Harry A. Taylor Jr., 73, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died June 2, 2001, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte.
He was born Feb. 25, 1928, in Camden, N.J., and came here more than 40 years ago from Fort Myers, Fla. He was a self-employed general contractor. Mr. Taylor owned Harry Taylor Masonry in Port Charlotte.
Surviving is his wife, Mary E. Norton Taylor; a son, Steven C. Taylor (Troyann) of Port Charlotte; a sister, Lillian Albert of Punta Gorda, Fla.; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Herminia Villaverde Berrios, 87, of Punta Gorda Isles, Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, May 31, 2001.
Formerly of San Juan, Puerto Rico, she had resided here for the past 15 years.
Mrs. Berrios is survived by her husband, Luis M. Berrios; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Luis D. and Margarita U. Berrios of Punta Gorda Isles; a brother, Emilio Villaverde of San Juan; two sisters, Rosa Ryan of North Port and Carlota Blay of Puerto Rico; and two granddaughters, Margit Bannon of Columbus, Ohio and Gretchen Barrios of Oxford, Ohio.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, June 2, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2500 Easy St., Port Charlotte.
