Steven Martin Moody, 73, of Boyne City, Mich., died May 11, 2001, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla., where he and his wife Rita wintered.
Steven was born on June 19, 1927, in Lawton, Mich., to Lena M. (Moore) and George A. Moody. He moved to Grand Rapids, Mich. in 1938, where he later met the love of his life, Rita J. (Kalinka) Moody. They were married on Jan. 15, 1949, and started a family. He served in the Air Force in World War II, working in aircraft maintenance for the Air Transportation Corps in Biloxi, Miss. Having studied engineering at Grand Rapids Junior College, he began a career with the Lear Corp. as an Aeronautical Engineer, earning a U.S. patent for his design of a gyroscope for guided missile systems. The family moved to Boyne City in 1961, when Steve was hired as chief engineer for Courter Products (later Bendix, now Honeywell Corporation). He retired in 1988 as marketing manager for Bendix. Even though Steve and Rita were busy raising eight children, he always found time to contribute to Boyne City. He served as mayor pro-tem and was a city commissioner for 14 years. A past president of the Boyne City Rotary Club, he was also a Lion, a member of the American Legion and, most recently, a member of the Elks. A fixture in Boyne City's Fourth of July celebrations, his humorous floats served as the finale to the annual downtown parade for more than 30 years. Steve loved golf, playing cards, traveling with his wife, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Steve is survived by Rita, his wife of 52 years; and eight children, Stephanie Moody of Boyne City, Patrick (Carol) Moody of St. Joseph, Mich., Timothy Moody of Punta Gorda, Fla., Michael (Sherrie) Moody of Port Charlotte, Jennie (Gary) Moody-Hawk of Charlottesville, Va., Marty (Connie) Moody of Boyne City, Thomas (Kelly) Moody of Pearland, Texas, and Scott Moody of Boyne City. He is also survived by three sisters, Suzanne (Don) Schwing of Onekama, Mich., Jane Wood of Bradenton, Fla., and Beryl (Bob) Stelle of San Francisco, Calif.; one brother, James Moody of Minooka, Ill.; a beloved cousin, Patricia (William) Barnes; dear family friend, Michelle Guitar; 15 cherished grandchildren, Jason, Peter (Pat), Todd, Brad (Tim), Adam, Erin, Kevin (Mike), Kyle, John (Jennie), Brittney, Kristin, Morganne, Cassidy (Marty), Cohen, Kiernan (Tom) and a loving extended family of many brothers/sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Laura Jean; his mother and father, two sisters, Georgeine Gayman and Zelda "Betsy" Elliott, and one brother, George "Buzz" Moody.
Visitation will be at Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City from 5 pm. to 8 p.m. May 17, and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 18. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. May 19, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Boyne City, with a luncheon immediately to follow.
A strong proponent of diversity in education, Steve saw all of his children and many of his grandchildren pursue interests in theater and drama. In his memory, his family has established a memorial fund that will provide scholarship assistance to future graduates of the Boyne City High School Drama Program. Kenneth Livingston
Kenneth Livingston, 85, of Rotonda West, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001 at Hospice House of Venice.
Born on Aug. 7, 1915 in Toledo, Ohio to Harold and Zella (Lewis) Livingston, he had been a resident of the Englewood area for 17 years, coming from Maumee, Ohio. Mr. Livingston was a research technician for the Libby Owens Ford Glass Company in Toledo for 27 years and retired in 1977. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Maydell Livingston; one daughter, Beverly Ann Livingston of Rotonda West; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be offered on Friday, May 18th at 1 p.m. at Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road, with the Rev. Janice Henry-Rinehart of Englewood United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Toledo, Ohio. Jean D. Mitchell
Jean D. Mitchell, 77, of Englewood, Fla., passed away May 16, 2001, at her Charlotte County residence.
Mrs. Mitchell was born Dec. 19, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to J. Charles and Helen (Ivins) Dens, and grew up in Westfield, N.J. Jean attended Stevens Junior College in Missouri, where she received her pilot's license, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a Control Tower Operator in Pensacola, Fla., and also attended American University in Washington, D.C. Jean led a full and busy life. She was a homemaker as well as a licensed real estate broker in New Jersey, a tennis enthusiast and active in the League of Women Voters and Planned Parenthood. She lived in the Red Bank-Rumson areas of New Jersey for more than 40 years. She was a member of the Red Bank Christian Science Church. Jean and her husband, Kenneth, wintered in Englewood since 1992 and moved from Red Bank in 1998.
Surviving is her husband, Kenneth M. Mitchell of Englewood; sisters, Jane McManigal of Hampstead, N.C., Helyne Fox of Red Bank; and eight nieces and nephews.
All services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jean's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 1230 S. Tuttle Ave., Sarasota, FL 34293. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel.
Anna R. Froman
Anna R. Froman, died May 12, 2001, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Center in Port Charlotte, Fla.
She was born Dec. 19, 1903, in Big Rapids, Mich., and came to Florida in 1962, and lived at Flamingo Estates on Pine Island with the husband, Charles, until he passed away in 1973. Prior to moving to Florida, she and Charles lived approximately 30 years in Cadillac, Mich. After Charles died, Anna lived at Laurel Estates in North Fort Myers and Royal Towers in Fort Myers until she moved to assisted living and nursing home facilities in Port Charlotte.
Anna spent most of her married life as a housewife, but had worked at Big Rapids State Bank in Michigan, and during World War II as a Prudential Insurance agent in Cadillac. Anna was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of North Fort Myers and then Christ the King Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte.
Anna is survived by her two children, Marie (Walter) McGroary of Port Charlotte and Charles (Joan) Froman of El Jobean, Fla. Anna has five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Port Charlotte, Fla.
Orlin Henry Baker
Orlin Henry Baker, 88, of North Port, died Monday, May 14, 2001 at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born on April 4, 1913 in Iron Mountain, Mich., to Peter and Lea (Deroushe) Baker, he had been a resident of Florida since 1979 coming from Farwell, Mich. Mr. Baker was a supervisor in the tool and die department for Ford Motor Company in Rawsonville, Mich.; after 26 years, he retired in 1975. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2887 in Waterford, Mich.
Survivors include three daughters: Lois Ann Werner of Port Charlotte, Fla., Benay Donaldson of Highland, Mich. and Gail Stauber of White Lake, Mich.; one son, Bradley Baker of Clarkston, Mich.; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Englewood Community Funeral Home has been selected to handle arrangements.
Dr. Barbara Ann Karpinski Adams
Dr. Barbara Ann Karpinski Adams passed away suddenly at her Englewood home on Sunday, May 6, 2001.
Dr. Adams was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on Sept. 20, 1944, and lived there until 1958, when she moved to the Lansing area with her parents, Paul L. Adams and Ruth Karpinski Adams.
She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1966, and worked for the Michigan State Legislature for 20 years. While working for the state, she embarked on a doctoral program at Western Michigan University, obtaining her Doctor of Public Administration in 1994. After conferral of her doctorate, she taught at Grand Valley State university for several years. She retired to Florida in 1999.
Survivors include three sisters: Dr. Mary L. Adams (Ken Bone); Ms. Susan E. Bugher and Ms. Katherine W. Adams; three aunts: Mrs. John N. Adams Jr.; Mrs. Charles Karpinski and Mrs. Joseph Karpinski; one uncle: Dr. Jerome B. Casey; a niece and four nephews as well as several cousins, grand-nieces and grand nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 18, with the Rev. Bob Elkin presiding. In lieu of flowers, donation to a personally preferred charity may be made. Englewood Community Funeral Home has been selected to handle arrangements.
H.B. 'Ben' Goodwin
H.B. "Ben" Goodwin, beloved husband and adored father, passed away May 12 in Englewood, Fla. He was 80 years old. He was born in Raleigh, N.C., Nov. 13, 1920.
Ben was retired from the railroad where he served as station master at the Tampa Union Station for many years. he was a member of the Floral City Masonic Lodge 133 and the Englewood United Methodist Church.
Ben is survived by his wife, Shirley "Cassady" Goodwin of Englewood. three children, Greg Goodwin of San Antonio, Texas, Cindee "Goodwin" Becker of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Deborah "Goodwin" Huston of Jacksonville, Fla.; three stepsons, Danny Futch of Ocala, Fla., David Futch of Sarasota, Fla., and Mark Futch of Punta Gorda, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Michael, Wesley, Kyle, Brandi, Mandy, Alison and Lon; three great-grandchildren, Kylie, Austin and Kylie; one sister, Mary Alice Simmons of Raleigh; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, in the Doan Chapel of Englewood United Methodist Church in Englewood with Pastor Bill Nelson officiating. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.
Anthony J. Raccuia
Anthony J. Raccuia, 84, of Englewood, Fla., died May 13, 2001.
He was born March 4, 1917, in New York City, and came to this area in 1993 from Emerson, N.J. He was a purchasing agent supervisor with the State of New York Insurance Department. He was a member of the Englewood Elks Lodge 2378, and a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He is survived by his two brothers, Frank of Englewood and Charles of White Plains, N.Y., six sisters, Diana Freudlich of Englewood, Lena Larocca of New York, Connie Barbaccia of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mary Ragusa of Long Island, N.Y., Viola Raccuia of New York and Helen Occhipinti of Ocean Township, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Englewood Chapel of Lemon Bay Funeral Homes. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood. Interment will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park, Englewood. Lemon Bay Funeral Homes, Englewood Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia L. Elswick
Virginia L. Elswick, 89, of Arcadia, Fla., died May 14, 2001.
She was born April 21, 1910 in Richwood, W. Va., and moved to this area 17 years ago from there. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Arcadia, Fla.
Survivors include her son, James R. Bussey of Franklin, N.C.,; sister, Hilda Porter of Petersburg, W. Va.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Colonel Roland "Rollie" L. Kolb
Colonel Roland "Rollie" L. Kolb, 84, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, May 3, 2001, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center.
Born May 17, 1916, in Fond du Lac, Wisc. to Amelie Bechaud Kolb and Pierce L. Kolb, he attended high school locally. He graduated from Ripon College, Ripon, Wisc., and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1939.
He was married to Emily Genge of Green Lake, Wisc. on October 5, 1940. Colonel Kolb had a decorated and combat-filled career in the second World War, commanding the First Battalion, 334th Infantry, 84th Division. During the Battle of the Bulge he was promoted to full Colonel.
One of Wisconsin's most honored soldiers, Colonel Kolb was decorated many times by the United States and foreign allies. Decorations included the Silver Star, Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, French Croix de Guerre (two citations), Presidential Citation, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Army General Staff Medallion and the Loiat Chief's of Staff Medallion.
He was also awarded light campaign and service medals.
Colonel Kolb was also cited for his outstanding service on the original U.S. Armistice Team in Korea in 1951. In 1954, he received the Ripon College Alumni Citation for outstanding achievement in Military Service.
Following World War II, Colonel Kolb was Assistant Professor of Military Science at Loyola University of Chicago, he then became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Military Science at Ripon College. During his career, Colonel Kolb served two separate tours at the Pentagon.
With outbreak of hostilities in Korea in 1950, Colonel Kolb served as Chief of Intelligence until 1952 and then Chief of Plans and Policy, Far East Command. In 1958 he was a Senior Advisor to the Turkish Army as part of the Joint U.S. Military Mission for Aid to Turkey.
He graduated from the Army War College, Carlisle, Pa., and in 1960, he assumed command of the Second Training Regiment at Fort Dix, N.J.
After serving as Director-Reserve Components, Plans, Operations, Communications and Electronics and Command and Control for the U.S. Continental Army Command (CONARC) based at Fort Monroe, Va., Colonel Kolb retired after 28 years of service to his country in 1967.
He and his wife, Emily, built their home on Hilton Head Island, S.C., where he pursued his love of sailing, art and golf. He was a charter member of Hilton Head Island's first yacht club. Rollie spent summers sailing star boats competition based in Green Lake. He also competed in the World Cup races in Seattle.
Rollie was a talented artist working successfully in several mediums and, although his work may be found in private collections throughout the states, his greatest pleasure was for almost 30 years designing the annual Christmas card to send to friends.
In 1983, the Kolb's moved to Punta Gorda , Fla. where Rollie continued to sail and paint. He and his wife were charter members of the Platinum Pont Yacht Club. During his life he was a member of Kiwanis, the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.
Rollie is survived by his beloved wife, Emily; his daughter, Cheryl Roht; his granddaughters, Jeannette Clark, Chania Wright and Nancy Roht; and his great granddaughter, Sydney Wright.
We will sorely miss his humor, love, talent and strength....and love him always.
A private funeral service with full military honors was held at Florida National Cemetery.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the Punta Gorda Chapel of Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home.
George Friess
George Friess 71, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Saturday, May 13, in Punta Gorda.
He was born March 22, 1930, in Queens, N.Y. He had been an insurance agent for Allstate Insurance Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1988.
He had lived in Punta Gorda since 1988 and was a member of the Punta Gorda Boat Club, Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club and the Bucketeers Club, St. Petersburg, Fla. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was preceded in death in 1993 by his first wife, Georgia Ann Fries.
Survivors include his present wife, Mary Ann Allen, of Punta Gorda, Fla., one daughter, Marne (Brian) Kelleher of Treasure Island, Fla.; one son, Michael J. Friess of Northport, N.Y.; two step-sons, Tom Chris Allen III and
Nathaniel U. Allen, both of St. Petersburg; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Caroline; and one step-grandson, Nathaniel Allen Jr.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Robert B. Futch, Jr.
Robert B. Futch, Jr., 80, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, Punta Gorda.
He was born December 18, 1920, in Fort Meade, Fla., and lived most of his life in Punta Gorda. He was a retired merchant marine and worked 20 years for St. Phillips Towing Co. of Tampa.
After his retirement, he was well known in the community for delivering flowers for Punta Gorda Flower Shop and Rainbow Florist. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Punta Gorda, Punta Gorda Lodge No. 115 F & AM and American Legion Post #103 of Punta Gorda. He was a veteran of World War II, U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Areta Yeager Futch, of Punta Gorda; two brothers, Gerald (Bernice) Futch of Punta Gorda and Otis (Nelda) Futch of Charlotte Harbor, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Tuesday from 1 p.m. until service time. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel. Rev. Harold Brown will officiate.
Private interment and military honors by the U.S. Navy will follow at Indian Springs Cemetery, Punta Gorda.
