David A. Akins

David Anthony Akins, 39, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005, at his home.

He was born Feb. 16, 1966, to the Rev. David Akins Jr. and Lula Akins.

Mr. Akins was a member of House of Refuge Church of God. He was a DeSoto High School graduate of 1985. He was self-employed as a landscaper and a farmer.

He is survived by his parents; daughter, Safari Akins; brother, Louis (Gwen) Rechard of Miami, Fla.; sister, Myrna (Joe) Youngblood of Arcadia; brother-in-law, Tommy Hillard of Arcadia; maternal grandmother, Ethel Jones of Sparta, Ga.; four nephews, Rodney Roberts of Tampa, Fla., Donte Hillard, Brandon Hillard and Derrick Hillard, all of Arcadia; four nieces, LaQuanda Rechard of St. Petersburg, Fla., LaKeesha Hillard and Moneisha Williams, both of Arcadia, and Ebony Hawkins of Miami; two uncles, Governor Akins of Plainfield, N.J., and Harry (Teresa) Akins Sr. of Arcadia; nine aunts, Annie Pearl Jones of Sparta, Margaret (Joe) Cooper of Orlando, Fla., Addie Mae Brodie and Ellen (Herbert) Motley, both of Arcadia, Annie (Otis) Clayton of Umatilla, Fla., Betty Betts, Willie Kay Betts and Marchelle Jones, all of Plainfield, and Mary Clark of Eustis, Fla.; special companion, Georgiaetta Greene; best buddies, Kenneth Wicks, Nathan Williams, Leroy White, Alvin Lovette, Eddie Evans, Harry Motley Sr., Henry Weatherspoon Jr. and Michael Williams; and a large host of cousins, other relatives, friends and church members. He was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Hillard; and brother, Paul Akins.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2005, at Hickson Funeral Home in Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2005, at House of God Church, 201 Alabama Ave., Arcadia, with Bishop Roy Freeman, pastor of House of Refuge Church of God, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Mary Kay Bradford

Mary Kay Bradford, 51, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away April 27, 2001.

She was born May 9, 1949, in Traverse City, Mich., and moved here in 1985 from there. She enjoyed the Florida sun and all her loving friends. She courageously battled breast cancer for the last eight years. She was a Protestant and had a strong faith in God.

She is survived by her devoted husband, James C. Bradford of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Shannon Lichty (Shawn); granddaughters, Misty, Amand, Chloe, Emma of Traverse City; her father, Elmer Allen; a brother, Jim Allen (fiance, Debbie Hamlet); special friend, Dianne Allen, all of Traverse City; a sister, Teri Passmore (Lanney) of Durand, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and grandparents.

A beautiful and extremely brave woman whom we loved and who loved us, has gone to heaven. She will be greatly missed by many. Even though our journey through life is unpredictable, we will one day be reunited. Until then remember her in life and not in death.

A gathering was held at her home April 29 for the family and close friends to be followed by a memorial and celebration of life service from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 18, in Traverse City at the Asbury Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida (Venice Chapter). Additional donations may be made to the American Breast Cancer Society for help in a cure one day. Arrangements by ICS Cremation Society Inc. of Harbour Heights, Fla.

Ernest Klatt

Ernest "Ed" Klatt, 83, of Englewood, Fla., died May 4, 2001 in Englewood.

Born April 22, 1918 in Ashburn, Ill., he moved to our area in 1976 from Belding, Mich. He retired October 1976 from Consumers Power Company, Grand Rapids, Mich.. Mr. Klatt was a life member of the Elks Lodge No. 2378 in Englewood, and the American Legion Post No. 113 of Rotonda West, Fla.

Mr. Klatt worked for the Wabash Railroad in Chicago in his early years and was a steam locomotive enthusiast. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Belding, Mich.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Klatt; a son, Charlie E. (Billie) Klatt of Tampa, Fla.; two granddaughters, Sara Sosbee and Katherine Klatt of Charlotte, N.C.; and two great grandchildren, Patrick Klatt and Kalee Sosbee.

There will be a lakeside service in Wellston, Mich. at a later date. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte, Florida.

Concepcion Torres

Concepcion Torres, 56, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, May 4, 2001.

Born May 17, 1944 in Puerto Rico, to Pedro & Pauline Deliz, Concepcion with her family came to the United States at a young age. Residing in Maywood, N.J. for many years, with husband Hamilen and family, she moved to Port Charlotte three years ago. She was of the Roman Catholic faith.

Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Hamilen E. Torres; sons, Mark (daughter-in-law Claire) and Eric; mother, Pauline Deliz; sister, Anne Hickey; grandson, Peter Mark Torres; and niece, Nadeen Antonetti, all of Port Charlotte.

Visitation for family and friends will be today, May 6, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with an evening wake service at 7 p.m., at Roberson Funeral Home in Port Charlotte. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 7, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Port Charlotte. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454. Arrangements are with Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Mary Elizabeth Cole

Mary Elizabeth Cole, died May 3, 2001, in her home in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

She was born and raised in Arcadia, Fla., and moved to Gulf Breeze to be with her children. Mary was a member of the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church and was much loved and well-known in the medical communities of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Their love and caring helped her to stay with her family for an extraordinarily extended period of time. Her grace, strength and love touched everyone she knew and left an impression that will live always in her hearts. With the passing of Mary, she left behind fond memories for her four children, Michael, Rhonda, Rosina and Richard.

Mary, known as Liz, is survived by Michael Papantonio and his wife, Terri; Rhonda Papantonio Buyers and her husband, Gary; Rosina Papantonio Cristalli and her husband, John; and Richard Papantonio. Her life was full and rich with the blessing of her grandchildren, Sara, Andy, Gary, Terri, Laura, Michelle and Nicole, and three wonderful great-grandchildren. All of us wish her a beautiful journey to her peace with God.

Arrangements are by Rose Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, Gulf Breeze.

Loretta D. Durian

Loretta D. Durian, 79, of Port Charlotte, died April 25, 2001.

She was born in Wyandotte, Mich., on Jan. 31, 1922. Loretta lived in Detroit, Mich. for many years and moved to Port Charlotte in 1973. She was the owner and operator of a beauty salon and also locally for the Charlotte County Sewing Center. She was a member of the American Legion Post No. 110, here in Port Charlotte and VFW in Michigan. She was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Jordan of Port Charlotte; three siblings, Nellis (Pat) Reaume of Deep Creek, Fla., Charles (Joyce) of Sebring, Fla., and Sandra (Jerry) Taylor of Lincoln Park, Mich.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, Port Charlotte Chapter, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34232. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home.

Joyce Elaine Evenson

Joyce Elaine Evenson, 84, of Port Charlotte, died May 3, 2001 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

She was born Aug. 4, 1916 in Livingston, Wis. She moved to our area in 1976 from Madison, Wis. She retired as a secretary for Ralston Purina's research division in 1974, in Madison. She was a member of San Antonio Catholic Church Women's Guild, and the Madison (Wis.) Catholic Woman's Club. Her hobbies included music, knitting and arts and crafts. She was a member of the San Antonio Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Orville L. Evenson. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest J. Kovacs, in 1968. Also surviving are a daughter, Karen Tourdot of Portland, Ore.; two sons, Thomas Kovacs of Madison, and Jerry Kovacs of Modesto, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Betty, Joan and Annetta; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and 12 step-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be offered at San Antonio Catholic Church at a later date. A memorial service will also be at Port Charlotte Village at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 28441 Bonita Crossing Blvd., Bonita Springs, FL 34135. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Leon C. Karel

Leon C. Karel, 82, of Port Charlotte, died May 2, 2001 in Port Charlotte. Born Feb. 28, 1919 in Riverside, Iowa, he moved to our area in 1984 from Kirksville, Mo. He retired as Professor of Allied Arts & Humanities from Truman University in Missouri. A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, he played in the military band of the 13th Airborne Division in Europe, which was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. He was also secretary of the National Association for Humanities Education, founding president of the Society for Entertainment and Arts Development (SEAD) 1987-89 in Port Charlotte, and a music critic for the Charlotte Sun. He was a member and chairman of the music committee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Charlotte County.

A Fulbright Scholar and published author, he edited Stania Slahor's translation of "In Dvorak's Footsteps" written by Miroslav Ivanov. He composed chamber music, including two pieces for his daughter, Laura Karel George, "Reminiscence Rag" for woodwind quintet and "Rondo Rhapsody" for flute and harp which appears on her CD "The Enchantment of Flute and Harp." He also composed a "Clarinet Concerto" for his son, David Karel as well as a symphony and choral compositions. Dr. Karel was an accomplished jazz pianist.

He is survived by his wife of nine years, Virginia Karel; daughters, Laura Karel George of Montclair, N.J., and Amy Karel Nelson of San Bernardino, Calif.; and a son, David Gordon Karel of Quebec City, Canada.

Services will be held Sunday, May 6, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Charlotte County, 1525 Forrest Nelson Blvd. (627-4303).

Memorial Donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1040 Woodcock Road, Suite 119, Orlando, FL 32803; and to The Friends of Music of Charlotte County Inc., P.O. Box 8041, Port Charlotte, FL 33949-8041.

Joanne Alice Rockenstire

Joanne Alice Rockenstire, 58, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died April 28, 2001.

She was born Aug. 7, 1942, in Albany, N.Y., and came to Florida in 1997 from Poestenkill, N.Y. At the time of her death, she was employed at J.C. Penney's in Port Charlotte.

Survivors include her husband, James; two sons, James Jr. of Cherry Plains, N.Y. and William of Port Charlotte; her mother and father, Alice and Casey Borowski of Port Charlotte; one granddaughter, Christine; and daughter-in-law, Tess of Cherry Plains; by many friends and relatives in New York, including her best friend, Sharon Rockenstire.

A private family service will be held. Forest Lawn Cremation is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 1144 Veronica St., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

Martha B. Ross

Martha B. Ross, 92, of Berkely, Calif. and former resident of Port Charlotte, Fla. died April 12, 2001 at the home of her son Franz in Berkely.

She was born July 19, 1908 in Savannah, Ga. and moved to Port Charlotte in 1962. Last year, she moved to Berkely to be closer to her family. She is the widow of the late Col. Franz H. Ross who died in 1994. She married her husband, a career army officer in 1940. She was among the first boatload of American dependents to arrive in the Philippines after World War II. Other tours of duty include Fort Sill, Okla., Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Holibird, Md., as well as Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Baumholder, Germany. In Port Charlotte, she served as a willing volunteer for her church, St. James Episcopal Church, and other civic organizations that helped build the community. Franz Ross Park is named for her husband, a former Charlotte County Commissioner and major influence in creating the park. She was also a member of the Port Charlotte Chapter of the D.A.R. and the Retired Officers Association.

She is survived by a daughter, Jean Ross Kondek of Lambertville, N.J., and two sons, Franz H. Ross Jr. and Douglas B. Ross, both of Berkely; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at St. James Episcopal Church, Port Charlotte. The Rev. Michael H. Wilson will officiate. Inurnment will follow at St. James Columbarium.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 1365 Viscaya Drive, Port Charlotte, FL 33952. Arrangements by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Robert Savage

Robert "Doc" Savage, 73, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died on April 29, 2001.

He was a retired fireman for the city of Waterbury, Conn., where he made his home until 1992. He attended Leavenworth High School and served in the Philippines in World War II. He was a coach with the Mickey Mantle League and later became the third base coach for The Waterbury Timers of the Twi-Met League. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, Moose Lodge and the Ancient Order of Hibernius, Connecticut Chapter and the Waterbury Police and Fireman's Retirees.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carmela (Marinaro) Savage of Punta Gorda; daughters, Deborah Savage of Torrington, Conn. and Kathleen Savage of Wolcott, Conn.; a son, Mark Savage of Florida. He also leaves his sister, Carol "Kay" (Savage) DiCorpo of Connecticut; and his brother, Pierre "Butch" Savage of Connecticut; a niece and several nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. May 4, at the Eagle Point Recreation Hall, 10303 Burnt Store Road, Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in the name of Robert F. Savage to the Moffitt Foundation, 12902 Magnolia Dr., Tampa, FL 33612; or to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, 3550 N. Central Ave., Ste. 300, Phoenix, AZ 85012. Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda, is serving the family.
