Trygve E. Aarhus

Trygve E. Aarhus, 91, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 22, 1909, in Manitowoc, Wis., and moved to Port Charlotte in 1972 from Europe. He was a retired personnel supervisor for the U.S. Government in Europe. He was a Lutheran, a member of American Philatelic Society and former member of the Port Charlotte Stamp Club.

He is survived by his wife, Grace D. Aarhus of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Rosemary Aarhus of Alexandria, Va.; three sons, Richard Aarhus of Clifton, Va., Robert Aarhus of Carlisle, Pa. and Ronald Aarhus of Bellevue, Neb.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. Graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Herbert H. Redwood

Herbert H. Redwood, 89, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Life Care Center of Punta Gorda.

Herbert was born July 16, 1911, in Gillingham, Kent, England to the late Herbert Wm. W. & Mildred L. Redwood. He moved to the states as a youth.

After serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II, he joined the Newark (N.J.) Fire Department as a fireman. During his 20-year career, he served as the acting captain. He retired to Florida and moved to Punta Gorda from Hollywood, Fla. in 1998. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

He is survived by his eight children; three sons, Douglas Redwood of Cooper City, Fla. and James and David Redwood, both of N.J.; five daughters, Dorothea Becker of Green Valley, Ariz., Diane Tabert of Punta Gorda, Fla., Janet Croson of Garner, N.C., Donna Redwood of N.J. and Dawn Abraham of Livingston, N.J.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. at Roberson Funeral Home in Punta Gorda. The visitation will be followed by evening funeral ceremonies at 8 p.m. the funeral home, 215 Mary St., Punta Gorda, with the Rev. Robert A. Sams of First Presbyterian Church of Punta Gorda officiating. Internment will be at 2:45 p.m. on Monday at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952. Arrangements are with Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Leonard Chillington

Leonard Chillington, 93, of North Port, Fla., died April 14, 2001.

Mr. Chillington was born in Darleston, England, and had been a resident of North Port since 1989, coming from Corinna, Maine and Greenwich, Conn. Mr. Chillington was a retired plant supervisor at Borden's in New York City and Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and retired from the Parks and Recreation Department in Greenwich. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Holiday Park Men's Club, Holiday Park Shuffleboard Club, and Holiday Park Homeowners Association.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Lois Chillington of North Port; his daughters, Dawn Chillington of Riverside, Conn., Janet Morrell of Connecticut; his sons, Ralph Chillington of Riverside and Ronald Chillington of Skowhegan, Maine; his sister, Nellie Craig of North Port; his brothers, Fred Chillington of North Port, and Frank Chillington of Stamford, Conn.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Inurnment will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien, Conn. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 4285 Wesley Lane, North Port, FL 34287. Farley Funeral Home & Crematory, North Port Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence E. Darnell

Clarence E. Darnell, 88 of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Friday, April 15, 2005.

He was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Jefferson, Ga.

Clarence graduated from Martin Institute High School in 1933. He then graduated from Athens Business College in 1934. He served in the 8th U.S. Army Air Force as a B17 first pilot with 19 missions over Germany during World War II in the European Theater of Operations and spent one year in a prisoner of war camp. He was discharged as a captain in the Air Force Reserve. During his civilian career, he worked for General Motors as a regional sales manager. He retired in 1974.

He is survived by his daughter, Madeline Darnell of Athens, Ga.; three grandchildren, Amy Kerr Parker of Pittsburgh, Pa., Brian Kerr of Chicago, Ill., and Sara Ruth Higgs of Washington, D.C.; and his loving companion, Nancy Perkins.

Clarence was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Sara.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda. Burial will be at a later date in Royston, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 507 W. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda, Fl 33950; American Cancer Society, 3709 W. Jetton Ave., Tampa, FL 33629; or American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680 North Canton, OH 44720.

Kays-Ponger Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda Chapel, is in charge of local arrangements.

Allan B. Wood

Allan B. Wood, 82, died Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Englewood, Fla.

He was born Aug. 31,1922 in Taunton, Massachusetts.

Allan served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then worked as a civil engineer for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works in Boston for 37 years. He moved to the Englewood area in 1986 from Raynham, Mass. He was a member of the American Legion Post 113 of Rotonda West and a past Chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10178 of Englewood.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn A. Wood of Englewood; two daughters, Cynthia J. Wood of Hancock, Maine and Carol F. Baali of St. Paul, Minn.; and two grandchildren.

No local services are planned.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel.

Albert J. Braga

"Liberty Deli" Owner Dies

Known by many and loved by all, sadly his passing has left a hole in our hearts. He will be greatly missed by those of us who loved him the most.

Albert J. Braga, 71, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2005, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Jan. 16, 1934, in Boston, Mass., to the late Albert and Regina Braga.

A 1951 graduate of Boston English, he continued his studies at Northeastern, MIT and Harvard universities. On May 29, 1955, he married Elena Mignosa. Al moved from Norwell, Mass., to Port Charlotte in 1984 where he and Elena opened Liberty Food Sales, a cornerstone of the Murdock Industrial Park. He co-owned Nettas Sub Villa, was a member of The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 4, the National Guard Yankee Division, the Elks Lodge and the Sons of Italy. He was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church of Port Charlotte.

Always ready with a smile and a story, Al treated each and every one of his customers like family. He was an incredible man, husband, father and grandfather. He shared his gift of unconditional love with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elena; children, Cindy Braga-Armstrong of Port Charlotte, and Steven (Kelly) Braga of Cohasset, Mass.; four grandchildren, Alexandria and Tyler Armstrong of Port Charlotte, and Sebastian and Harry Braga of Cohasset; and sisters, Emily (Braga) Verrochi and Irene (Braga) Walters.

A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at the Port Charlotte chapel of Roberson Funeral Home with a Catholic wake service at 7:30 p.m. A private committal will be held by the Braga family at a later date.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte chapel.

John P. Balzarini Jr.

John P. Balzarini Jr., 66, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Thursday, April 14, 2005, in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Therese (Pirie) Balzarini; sons, John Balzarini of Hanover, Mass., and Michael Balzarini of Carver, Mass.; three stepchildren, Donald Pirie, Michael Pirie and Christine Pirie; and former wife, Mrs. Miriam Balzarini of Worcester, Mass.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress St., Milford, Mass. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at St. Mary's Church in Milford.

Arrangements are by Edwards Memorial Funeral Home.

John J. McCarthy Sr.

John J. McCarthy Sr., 69, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was born Feb. 7, 1936, in Springfield, Mass.

Mr. McCarthy moved to this area in 1977 from Longmeadow, Mass. He was a long-distance truck driver before retiring in 1984.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Norma McCarthy of Port Charlotte; sons, John McCarthy Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Michael Fountain of Sarasota, Fla.; daughters, Donna Martiniz of Port Charlotte, Linda Woody of Cape Coral, Fla., and Lori Fountain of Punta Gorda; and six grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date.

The family has requested memorial donations be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Laura W. McKinley

Laura Wydro McKinley, 87, of Warminster, Pa. and formerly of Feasterville, Pa., and Port Charlotte, Fla., died Monday, April 11, 2005, at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, Pa.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa. She had been a resident of Centennial Station in Warminster for the last seven years.

Mrs. McKinley was a retired employee of the Lower Southampton Water and Sewer Authority. She was active in the Republican Party in Lower Southampton Township. Laura was a life member of the Feasterville Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Trevose Rescue Squad for many years and a member of the Feasterville Professional & Business Women's Club. She was a devoted mother and cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, John R. (Nancy) McKinley III of Trevose, Pa., and Donna (Robert) Varkonyi of Jamison, Pa.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Wanda Andres of Warminster.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John R. McKinley Jr., in 1994.

Service and interment are to be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Feasterville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Irving Place, Feasterville, PA 19053 in the name of Laura W. McKinley.

Lydia Pimentel

Lydia Pimentel, 79, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 14, 2005.

She was born July 26, 1925, in New Bedford, Mass., to Antonio and Amalia (Ferreira) Santos.

Lydia worked for Easton Sports Wear in New Bedford. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and P.A.S.A. of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Lydia will be greatly missed by her husband of 19 years, Joseph M.; daughter, Terry (Larry) Seymour of Port Charlotte; son, Jody Moutinho of Taunton, Mass.; stepson, Joseph (Nancy) Pimentel of Fall River, Mass.; brother, Daniel (Barbara) Santos of New Bedford; and grandson, Jared.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, April 18, 2005, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. A Mass in celebration of Lydia's life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Burial will be in New Bedford on Thursday, April 21, 2005.

William C. Rollins

William C. "Bill" Rollins, 64, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Friday, April 15, 2005, in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born Oct. 5, 1940, in Falls Church, Va.

He moved to Charlotte County in 1979 from Falls Church. Bill was the co-owner and operator of the Mrs. Blueprint in Port Charlotte with his late wife, Lois Fay, who preceded him in death in July 2003. He was a former member and past president of the Port Charlotte Business Association, and was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his two sons, William "Billy" M. Rollins of Port Charlotte, and Richard C. Rollins of Punta Gorda; daughter, Cynthia Ann Naylor of Jacksonville, N.C.; one brother, Marvin Showalter of Lillian, Ala.; one sister, Kathryn Steinert of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Casey, Mik and Danielle Naylor, and Hunter Rollins.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at the Port Charlotte chapel of Roberson Funeral Home. Rev. Robert B. Mattingly, of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Port Charlotte, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Delmar L. Combs

Delmar "Del" L. Combs, 66, of Harbour Heights, Fla., died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at his Harbour Heights residence.

No local service is planned, but a service will be held at a later date out of state. Arrangements are with Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Myrtle F. Guertin

Myrtle F. Guertin, 96, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at her daughter's home following a short illness.

She moved to this area in 1969 from Watertown, N.Y. She was born on April 18, 1904, in Barre, Ma. and resided most of her life in Needham, Ma. She was a graduate of Framingham (Mass.) Normal School with a degree in dietary science.

She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was Mother Advisor to two Order of Rainbow Assemblies in Needham and Newington, Conn. She has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte since her arrival in 1969.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Francis L. Guertin. She is survived by two daughters, Jane G. (Alfred J.) McCarthy, of League City, Texas and Carolyn G. Ridolfi of Port Charlotte; six grandchildren, Pamela J. Ridolfi, Linda B. Lynch and Sally J. Gorman, all of Port Charlotte and Keith F. McCarthy, Lynne A. McCarthy and Jill H. Warney, all of Houston, Texas; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for family members only will be held at Restlawn Cemetery, Port Charlotte. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. The Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home of Punta Gorda is handling arrangements.
