Mary E. Benedito, 85, a resident of Port Charlotte and former resident of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Charlotte Regional Medical Center Hospital in Punta Gorda.
Born March 3, 1916, in Emmett, Kan., she moved to Punta Gorda from Manhasset, N.Y. in 1972, and more recently, to Port Charlotte. She was a member of the Burnt Store Presbyterian Church in Punta Gorda.
She is survived by her children; a son, John D. Benedito Jr. of Gainesville, Ga.; a daughter, Libby Clemens of New York, N.Y. and three granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday in the Town Hall of South Port Square in Port Charlotte.
Arrangements are with Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel.
Betty St. John
Betty St. John, 69, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Friday, April 6, 2001.
Formerly of Edwardsville, Ill., she resided here for the past 20 years. She retired as a bookkeeper, having worked for several companies. Mrs. St. John was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1693, Elks Lodge #2606 and American Legion Post #103, all in Punta Gorda.
Survivors include her son, Michael (Pam) St. John of Highland, Ill.; her daughter Cheryl McFaden of Punta Gorda; a brother, Woodrow Decker of Belleville, Ill.; two sisters, Areta Erickson of Punta Gorda and Marge Traiter of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Amy (Dave) Zinkhon of Alber, N.M., Eric St. John and Jason St. John, both of Highland, Ill., and Dylan St. John of New Jersey.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Kassly Mortuary in Fairview Heights, Ill. The family will receive friends from 4-9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Local arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Homes, Punta Gorda Chapel.
Julia Kasee Evans
Julia Kasee Evans, 93, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Thursday, April 4, 2002.
She was born Aug. 11, 1908, in Toledo, Ohio, and came to Port Charlotte in 1979 from North Wales, Pa. She was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Port Charlotte.
Survivors include her loving husband of 45 years, Raymond Evans of Port Charlotte; one son, Patrick Kasee of Toledo, Ohio; one daughter, Doris Middleton of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was proceeded in death by one son, Frank Kasee.
Burial will be at a later date in Ohio. Donations may be made to your local heart or cancer foundation. Local arrangements are under the direction of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.
Rollo St. Clair Frame
Rollo St. Clair Frame, 92, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte.
Born Oct. 24, 1909, in Ingram, Pa., he moved to Port Charlotte in 1971 from Dayton, Ohio. He was a product engineer in the concrete pipe manufacturing business for many years before retiring. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, Port Charlotte Kiwanis Club, Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club, George L. Marshall Lodge #734 in Dayton, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Antioch Temple Shrine of Dayton and Reed Commandry #6 of Dayton.
He is survived by his son, Thomas F. Frame of St. Petersburg, Fla.; daughter, Margaret Edwards of Dayton; sister, Gertrude H. Retz of Columbus, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, 2230 Hariet Street.

Dale H. Hummel
Dale H. Hummel, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte.
He was born July 5, 1919, in Darke County, Ohio, to Alvin and Cora Livingston Hummel. He came here in 1984 from Darke County. He attended Community Life Center in Port Charlotte. He was an assembly line worker in the auto industry.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Geraldine "Jerry" Hummel of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Vicki L. Woods of Port Charlotte; brothers, Charles Hummel of Greenville, Ohio, and Claude L. Hummel of Union City, Ohio; a sister, Mary Neil of Port Charlotte; grandchildren, Brian L. Johnson, Roger A. (Christy Garland) Johnson, Mark H. Johnson and Stacy L. Johnson, all of Port Charlotte; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Glenn Hummel, and a sister, Ivy Smith.
A memorial service will be held at Community Life Center in Port Charlotte at 11 a.m. April 8, 2002.

Thomas L. Martin
Thomas L. Martin, 62, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Tom worked in food services most of his life. He was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church of Cleveland, Ohio, and Friendship United Methodist of Punta Gorda, Fla.
Preceded in death by father, Thomas F. Martin, he is survived by his mother, Christine Martin of Tallmadge, Ohio; lifelong friend, Stefan Jermakov of Cleveland; sister, Rozanne Shade of Enid, Okla.; brother, Bob (Katheren) Martin of Akron, Ohio; sister, Karole (Warren) Breckenridge of Akron; brother Don (Cindy) Martin of Munroe Falls, Ohio; sister, Tonya (Randy) Ballard of Tallmadge; seven nieces, Theresa, Kelly, Kristin, Emily, Jaclyn, Kim and Candy; seven nephews, Bob, Dean, Will, Jurt, Eli, Elliot, and Jim; and eight great-nephews, Christopher, Tori, Mark, Andrew, Joshua, Jordan, Fritz and Jon.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the members of the First United Methodist Church of Cleveland for the love and support they gave to Tom.

H.O. Abrahamson
H.O. (Abe) Abrahamson, 95, formerly of Tenafly, N.J., and Manasota Key, Fla., died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Wayland Nursing Rehabilitation Center.
He is the husband of Madeline (Maddie) P. Abrahamson, who continues to reside at Wayland Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Abe graduated from Dumont High School in New Jersey, and the University of New Hampshire (class of '28), where he was on the college soccer and boxing teams. He was also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He was an avid sports fan and supported the UNH teams and the Detroit Tigers.
Abe coached numerous Little League and Babe Ruth teams in Tenafly and was assistant scout master of Boy Scout Troop 140.
He worked 39 years for AT&T of NY and retired to Manasota Key in Englewood, Fla., where he was a member of the Myakka Country Club. He played golf into his late 80s.
He leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Malcolm Campbell of Haddonfield, N.J.; a son and daughter-in-law, Joan and Malcolm Campbell of Haddonfield, N.J.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Susan Abrahamson of Framingham, Mass.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Esther Mercier
Esther Mercier, 88, of Lakeland, Fla., died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 27, 1913, in Janesville, Wis. She moved to Lakeland from Englewood, Fla., two years ago. She also lived in Dunedin, Fla., for many years.
She was a homemaker, retired pastry chef, ice sculptor and artist. She was a Lutheran and worked as a volunteer for the Senior Free Lunch Program in Clearwater, Fla., and Dunedin for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Mercier, and daughter, Betty Crapson, and is survived by two daughters, Ruth Littman of Plympton, Mass., and Diane Kegley of Lakeland; one son, Arthur Mercier of Englewood; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral was held 2 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2002, at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater.

Kenneth L. Rookstool
Kenneth L. Rookstool, 88, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Friday, April 5, 2002, at Englewood Community Hospital.
Mr. Rookstool was born Jan. 1, 1914, in South Bend, Ind., to Clayton and Celia (Bradway) Rookstool. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired tool grinder with the Sealed Power Corporation in Rochester, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Alvada, on March 14, 2001.
He is survived by one daughter, Shirley Nickell of Englewood; one sister, Bernice Bitterling of Rochester, Ind.; three grandsons, James and Chad Ullery and Brando Nickell; and seven great-grandchildren.
All services will be in Indiana. Interment will be held in Citizens Cemetery, Rochester, Ind.

Helen M. Baker
Helen M. Baker, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at her residence.
Helen was born in central New York, where she was employed in the computer division of the Beechnut Packing Company, and was in charge of the Children's Division of the United Methodist Church in Canajoharie, NY. She was married to Dr. Peter Baker in 1938, moving to Batavia, N.Y., in 1940, where she resided until retiring to Punta Gorda in 1971. Though retired, she was again active in the Children's Ministry of the United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda, and was a volunteer worker in Charlotte Regional Medical Center Hospital. She was a member of the Punta Gorda Country Club, Burnt Store Country Club, St. Andrews Golf Club, and Isles Yacht Club.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Peter F. Baker, daughters, Barbara Baker of East Amherst, N.Y., and Joan Caliri of Bradford, Mass., a son, Dr. James Baker of Golden, N.Y., and three grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be Tuesday, April 10, 2001 in Batavia, New York. Memorial donations are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, Children's Ministry Fund, 507 W. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950.

Jeffrey W. Barnes
Jeffrey W. Barnes, 35, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died April 2, 2001, in Port Charlotte.
He was born Nov. 5, 1965 in Stuttgart, Germany. He came to the Port Charlotte area from Manassas, Va., three years ago. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his mother Ora Lee Barnes; his Father Allen Barnes Jr., of Stafford, Va.; his daughter Sheena Sanchez of Las Angeles, Calif.; brothers, Christopher Barnes of Manassas, and Marshall Barnes (Michelle) of Charlotte, N.C.; sister Katrina Barnes of Manassas; four nieces and several cousins.

Michael R. Joseph
Michael " Mike" R. Joseph, 47, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Lee Memorial Hospital, Fort Myers, Fla.
He was born Sept. 10, 1953 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and moved to Charlotte County a year and a half ago from Oak Brook, Ill. A graduate of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pa., he was a retired flexible packaging salesman and a member of the Deep Creek Golf Club. He loved golfing and boating on the Peace River.
Survived by his beloved wife, Jill B. Joseph of Punta Gorda; his mother, Dorothy A. Joseph of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Anne J. Copeland of Sarasota; three brothers, Greg A. Joseph of Greenville, Wisc., Brad L. Joseph of Willowbrook, Ill., and Todd W. Joseph of Weston, Mass.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Roberson Funeral Home Punta Gorda Chapel. Margaret Porter Witte
Margaret Porter Witte, 81, of Florida, and formerly of Utica, N.Y., passed away April 3, 2001, in Punta Gorda, Fla.
She was born on Sept. 3, 1919, in Whitesboro, N.Y., the daughter of Francis and Cecilia (Shue) Porter. Margaret was a graduate of Proctor High School and Syracuse University where she received a masters degree in Education. On April 6, 1942, she married Clayton Charles Porter in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. He passed away in 1981. Margaret then married John Witte. She was a school teacher at Proctor High School and also at Utica Catholic Academy, retiring in 1977. Margaret had a summer home in Westdale, N.Y., where she was a member of St. John's Church in Camden. Margaret was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Utica and Sacred Heart Church in Punta Gorda, a member of BPOE No. 33, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Utica Maennerchor, Deerfield Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered at the Punta Gorda Library.
Surviving are her husband, John; two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara (Bonnie) Brown of Topeka, Kan., Theresa (Terri) and David Prichard of Brewerton, N.Y.; three step-daughters, Janice Porter, Joanne Martin and Denise Franks; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Margaret was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Dowling in October of 2000.
Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m., April 7 from Nunn & McGrath Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica and 9:30 a.m. from St. Peter's Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Relatives and friends are invited and may call April 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
John F. Cherry
John F. "Frank" Cherry, 73, of Arcadia, Fla., formerly of Alamo, Ga., died April 5, 2001.
Mr. Cherry was a retired Navy Master Chief Petty Officer. He was born in Alamo and moved to Arcadia in 1990. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Mr. Cherry is survived by his wife, Myrtle Barber Cherry of Arcadia; his children, Linda Cherry Webster of Scotland, Ga., Tony Cherry of Panama City, Fla., Ken Cherry of London, Ohio and David Cherry of Dawsonville, Ga.; a sister, Barbara Cherry Evans of Alamo; 23 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; and daughters-in-law, Tammy Cherry, Mary Bliss and Debra Cherry and his son-in-law, Ricky Rawls. Mr. Cherry was the oldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cherry (deceased). He is predeceased by Deborah Cherry, Brenda Cherry Rawls of Fitzgerald, Ga., Mark Cherry of Lexington, Ga. and Jeffrey Cherry of Athens, Ga., and a brother, Thomas Cherry.
