Huge Marriages Search Engine!Mary Burdick Crandall
Mary Burdick Crandall, 79, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died March 29, 2000.
Mary was born May 25, 1920, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., to Madeleine Baar Burdick and Percy Witter Burdick. She spent her early years in Niagara Falls. Her father and mother built a house on South Avenue in that city, which became the center of her life until she was ready to go to college. She formed many strong friendships with the other children in that South Avenue neighborhood. Many of these families had at least one member who worked for the Carborundum Company, the same as her father.
Her father was a ceramic engineer graduate from Alfred University, who influenced her and her family to come to Alfred to live after her father's death in 1938.
Mary attended the University of Rochester, where she graduated with a fine arts degree. While she was there, she was able to attend class in the Rochester School of Music. Music had always been a very important part of her life. Her family purchased a grand piano for her at the age of 10, and she began taking lessons immediately. This love of music formulated much of her thinking and lifestyle all of her life.
Mary came to Alfred to visit her mother and brother, Robert, during her days at Rochester. Her brother, Bob, was attending the college of ceramics at Alfred University. When she was on one of these visits to Alfred, she met William Crandall, and through this instant attraction to one another, started dating. On Aug. 22 1942, after the graduation of Mary from the University of Rochester and Bill from the college of Ceramics at Alfred University they were married. This union started one of the happiest productive and very full lives for both of them.
They had three children. John Crandall is married to Patricia T. Crandall of Rochester, N.Y.; Mary Jean (Polly) Crandall is married to John Miner of Freeville, N.Y.; and Donald W. Crandall is married to Sheree C. Crandall of Siloam Springs, Ariz.
Mary is also survived by her husband, Bill; and her brother, Robert Burdick, married to Kit C. Burdick of Lancaster, Va. Mary also has five living grandchildren.
Mary's life with Bill Crandall was very fulfilling. The family lived in many locations, including Hirakata, Japan, where Bill worked for the Matsushita (Panasonic) Company. She always made her presence in the new location a new home for the family, caring for her husband and the children in a way that formed a very strong bond and feeling of security for all.
After the children were married, Bill returned to Alfred University to take up teaching and research, and Mary immediately found a way to be very active again in the community. She took organ lessons and started to play organ in the Union University Church, where she was organist and choir director for many years.
She started playing the cello when she was in Alfred years before, so when she returned to Alfred, she started playing in the local orchestra and also in a string quartet. While gone from here she had been able to find orchestras in each of the locations where she lived and found an outlet for her talent and great interest in music by joining each of the groups.
Mary was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of bone cancer, in 1993. She was treated with many forms of medication (chemotherapy) throughout the last 6 1/2 years. Although this disease became an ever-present affliction, she never let it take over her life. Hospice services were started in June 1999 and continued until her death. Hospice doctors, nurses, aides and volunteers gave loving, helpful care throughout these past months. The family is very appreciative of the professional way in which this organization helped our family.
Mary had a very strong spirit and took part in many family activities as her health would permit. She was a devoted mother, wife and community member and we will all miss her very much.
A memorial funeral service will be at 2 p.m. April 10 at the Union University Church in Alfred. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Comstock Hospice Care Network, 32 Willets Avenue, Belmont, NY 14813.
