William R. Nolan Sr., 76, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Saturday, April 2, 2005.
He was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Northville, Mich.
Mr. Nolan served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired as an equipment mechanic and welder in Michigan. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union.
Mr. Nolan is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Lonna Litle and Paula Bailey, both of Homosassa, Fla., and Susan Nolan of Michigan; sons, March W. of Homosassa and William Jr. of Virginia; stepdaughter, Judy Moors of Michigan; stepsons, Tom Mable of Michigan and Jim Mable of Florida; brother, John Ranken of Springhill, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Rick.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Little Willie's R.V. Park in Arcadia.
Margaret Dickinson
Margaret Dickinson, 78, formerly of Wilmington, Ohio, passed away March 23 in Punta Gorda, Fla.
Margaret was born Nov. 5, 1922, to the late John and Sophie Beyczi in Perth Amboy, N.J. She alternated between being a homemaker and working in the retail sector for Albers and Krogers in Wilmington and Rite Aid in Punta Gorda.
Margaret's husband, Louis Dickinson, preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Gary; granddaughter, Emily; grandson, Michael; and former daughter-in-law, Beverly, all of Wilmington; sister, Ollie Flowers of Perth Amboy; and brother-in-law and close personal friend, Benjamin Dickinson of Punta Gorda. She was a loving and caring aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Mass was offered for Margaret at Saint Joseph's Cathedral in Woodbridge, N.J. A private service was observed by the immediate family at the Charlotte
Memorial Funeral Home in Punta Gorda.
John P. Lee
John P. Lee, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away March 24, 2002.
He was born July 6, 1919, in New York City, to the late Phillip and Louise (Phillips) Lee. He came to this area in 1986 from New York, after retiring with 21 years of service at Flushing Hospital. He served his country with the Army in the 372nd Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He attended Saint Martin's Episcopal Church in New York and was an avid bowler.
John will be greatly missed by his wife, Estelle; daughter, Denise Ebron-Harrison of Port Charlotte; grandsons, Andre Locust of San Antonio, Texas, and Malik Locust of Port Charlotte; sisters, Daisy Lee and Ianthe Petties, both of New York; niece, Valerie Petties of New York; and two great-grandchildren.
Services in celebration of John's life will be private. Inurnment will take place at Charlotte Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.
Cheryl L. Riedel
Cheryl L. Riedel, 33, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Michigan, died April 2, 2002.
Cheryl had resided here since 1995, coming from Michigan. Cheryl worked at the Charlotte Harbor Raw Bar. Beautiful inside and out, Cheryl always lit up a room with her humor, laughter and smile. She saw the best in everyone and was loved for her incredibly caring, giving, and big heart. She will be missed by all.
Surviving are her parents, Patricia L. and Thomas Wiegand of Punta Gorda and Charles F. and Dorothy Riedel of Daly City, Calif.; sisters, Catherine T. Riedel of Oakland, Calif., Lorene G. Riedel of Punta Gorda, and Susan M. (Brian) Roessler of Osprey, Fla.; a brother, Stephen M. (Judy) Wiegand of Sterling Heights, Mich.; maternal grandmother, Grace Riedel of Sterling Heights; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, in the Punta Gorda Chapel of the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tim Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, at the funeral home. Cheryl, we love you and pray you've found love and peace.
Gladys Kester-Ward
Gladys Kester-Ward, 82, of North Port, Fla., died on April 2, 2002.
She was born July 17, 1919, in Rock Island, Ill. She moved to this area in 1983 from Rock Island. She was a member of North Port Community United Church of Christ, and the U.C.C. Women's Fellowship.
She is survived by her husband, Frederick W. Ward of North Port; a son, Jack Stephen Kester of Rock Island; two daughters, Patricia Jeanne Lerch of Illinois City, Ill., and B. (Jodi) Jolene Butz of Moline, Ill.; a sister, Bernice LaPorte of Silvis, Ill.; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her husband, children, grandchildren, sister and other family in Illinois and many friends and acquaintances in North Port.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 8, at North Port Community United Church of Christ.

Harold C. Brooks Jr.
Harold C. Brooks Jr., 79, of Arcadia, Fla., died April 2, 2002, in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Mr. Brooks was born Jan. 4, 1923, in Muskegon, Mich., and moved to Arcadia 13 years ago from Muskegon. He was a retired tool maker for an aircraft manufacturer. He was of the Protestant faith, a member of DAV Woodtayloor Post No. 2 and American Legion Post No. 0397 of Holton, Mich.
He is survived by his wife, Laura E. Brooks of Arcadia; four sons, Kevin (Barbara) Brooks of Washington state, Douglas Lory of Muskegon, Kelless Lory of Atlanta, Ga., and Bernard (Georgia) Lory of Whitehall, Mich.; two daughters, Lucy Johnson and Terry Dupre, both of California; a brother, Donald (Lenora) Brooks of Blue Lake, Mich.; two sisters, Lois (Laverne) Medendorp of Twin Lake, Mich., and Linda (Harley) Bonebrake of Michigan; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Muskegon. Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia, will be in charge of local arrangements.
John Smith Jr.
John (Dick) Smith Jr., 78, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away at his home April 3, 2002.
He was born in Covington County, Ala., on Aug. 11, 1923, to John and Alice Smith. He married Mildred Sally Campbell on May 26, 1946. Together they moved to Arcadia in 1948 from Milton, Fla. Known as "Tater," Mr. Smith retired from the DeSoto Correctional Institution in 1987, after 23 years of service as the carpenter instructor. He was a former civil service employee and a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Arcadia. He was an avid fisherman, having caught two small bass, more than 10 pounds each, which were mounted for bragging.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Mildred; a son, John R. (Angela) Smith III, Arcadia; four daughters, Mary (Junior) Spivey of Apex, N.C., Sheila (Earl) Metty, Wara (Bill) Albaugh, all of Arcadia, Dixie (Roger) Cunningham of Grand Blanc, Mich.; six grandchildren, Ricky (Gloria) Spivey, Shannon Spivey, Kevin Metty, Brian Metty, Wendy (IV) Floyd, Sandrea Waggoner; two step-grandchildren, Seth (Nicole) Albaugh and Stephanie O'Dell; two great-grandchildren, Richard Spivey and Emma Floyd; two step-great-grandchildren, Alexander Albaugh and Austin O'Dell and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Myrtle Bohannon; two brothers, Wilmer (Will) Smith and William T. (Snow) Smith; his parents; and an infant son, John (Dickie) Smith.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, at the Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at First Church of the Nazarene, Arcadia, with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, with the Rev. Kevin Crimmins officiating.
James V. Dice
James V. Dice, 84, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died April 3, 2001.
He was born Oct. 30, 1916, in Portsmouth, Va., and moved here in 1976 from Maryland. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and a training director for the U.S. Department of Defense. James belonged to the United States Retired Officers Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Punta Gorda.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mrs. James V. Dice; a daughter, Linda Dice Lantz (Charles) of McLean, Va.; a son, James V. Dice II (Cindy Stanford) of Salem, Ill.; six grandchildren, Aaron, Josh, David, Daniel and Joy Dice and Megan Lantz and one great-grandchild, Sarah.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 5, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel. There is a memorial service at 11 a.m. April 6 at the First Baptist Church, Punta Gorda. Burial is pending at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Elizabeth A. Dunn
Elizabeth A. Dunn (nee Legato), 89, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died March 28, 2001.
Mrs. Dunn was born March 27, 1912, in Emporium, Pa., and moved to this area in 1969 from Walled Lake, Mich.
She was a retired executive secretary for Chrysler Corp. from 1929 to 1969 and also taught English and shorthand at the Chrysler Institute from 1942 to 1958. Mrs. Dunn owned and operated Union Lake Glass Co. in Union Lake Mich. with her late husband. In retirement, she owned and operated Port Charlotte Glass Company, Port Charlotte, Fla. She was also a certified realtor in Florida.
Mrs. Dunn graduated from Detroit Secretarial College and Wayne State University. She was president of Zeta Kappa Psi in 1945. She volunteered at the Drayton Woods Social Club teaching shorthand, typing and business. She was a member of Punta Gorda Isles Yacht club.
Mrs. Dunn was pre-deceased by her husband, William; two sisters, Helen Zuenen and Cordelia Beattie; and three brothers Samual Legato, Joseph Legato and Albert Legato.
Survivors include one sister, Evelyn Latcha; one brother, Herbert Legato; and loving nieces and nephews and many great- nieces and nephews.
An 11 a.m. memorial mass will be held April 7, 2001, at St. Joan of Arc Chapel, St. Clair Shores, Mich. and internment services will be held shortly after at 11:30 a.m. at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda, Fla. Leo A. Fournier Sr.
Leo A. Fournier Sr., 88, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte.
He was born August 8, 1912, in Lowell, Mass., and moved to Port Charlotte 12 years ago from Zephyrhills, Fla. He was retired from the shoe manufacturing business and attended St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church of Port Charlotte.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Fournier of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Blanche Slattery of Port Charlotte; a son, Leo A. Fournier Jr. of Hudson, N.H.; a stepson, Joseph Miraglia of Punta Gorda; a stepdaughter, Angela West of Port Charlotte; three sisters, Yvonne Boylan of Sandwich, Ma., Bertha LaPlanta and Theresa Doherty, both of Manchester, N.H.; two brothers, Robert Fournier of Bear, Del. and Raymond Fournier of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 5, 2001, from 6-8 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. Further services and internment will be held in Manchester, N.H. Local arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.
Kristine Kollarek
Kristine (Kristy) Ann Kollarek, 38, of Punta Gorda, Fla., beloved daughter of Elizabeth Kollarek of Naples, Fla., and Frank Kollarek of Golden Gate, Fla., died on April 2, 2001. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995, Kristy passed away peacefully at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Kristy attended Lake Park Elementary School and Gulf View Middle School. She was a member of the Naples High School Golden Eagle Marching Bank and graduated in 1981. She earned her Computer Science degree from Husson College, Bangor, Maine. She was employed as an administrative assistant for Asplundh in Fort Myers, Fla. An avid sailing enthusiast, Kristy sailed with the Punta Gorda Sail Club and participated as a crew member in many races and regattas in Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Sarasota and Maine. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Women's Softball team and also enjoyed photography.
Kristy is survived by her loving sisters, Kim K. Sanders of Punta Gorda, Karen Forkey of Island Pond, Vt. and her twin, Kyle P. Houhoulis of Punta Gorda. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Samuel A. Sanders, Jeffrey Houhoulis of Punta Gorda, Lloyd Forkey of Island Pond; a nephew, Richard A. Sanders; a niece, Adriana E. Sanders. Her extended family includes Althea Kollarek of Golden Gate, Grace and Don Burow of North Port, Fla.; 12 aunts and uncles and 15 cousins.

Cecil E. Smith
Cecil E. "Smitty" Smith, 69, died April 1, 2001, at his home in Charlotte Harbor, Fla.
He was born May 13, 1931, in San Antonio, Texas, and came to Port Charlotte from there 67 years ago. Mr. Smith was a nursing assistant at Medical Center Hospital in Punta Gorda, Fla.
Mr. Smith is survived by Vivian L. Lowe of Charlotte Harbor; two step-sons, Charles Weems of Pensacola, Fla. and Curtis Lowe of Port Charlotte; two stepdaughters, Bobbie Presswood of Pensacola and Laverne Ward of Lucedale, Miss.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. April 5, in the Chapel of Paul Schelm Funeral Home, with the American Legion Post No. 110 officiating.

Harold E. Allen Sr.
Harold E. Allen Sr., 78, a resident of Port Charlotte, Fla., died April 2, 2001, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte.
He was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Decatur, Ill., to Clarence Allen and Mable Goodpasture Allen. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, receiving two purple heart medals in Valmontone, Italy, in 1944. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Charlotte Harbor.
His wife, Margaret, died in 1966. He is survived by a son, Harold Allen Jr. of Port Charlotte; two grandchildren, Harold Allen III and Barbara Jeanette Allen; one great-grandson, Shane Allen; and a sister, Maxine Spittler, all of Port Charlotte.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. April 7 at the Chapel of Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Punta Gorda, with the Rev. John Fuoss officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Charlotte Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 110 of Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home.
Gerald Davis
Gerald Davis, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died April 2, 2001 at Port Charlotte.
Mr. Davis was born Oct. 12, 1918 in Columbus, Ohio. He has resided in Port Charlotte since 1984, moving from Ohio. He had owned a wholesale electrical business in Delaware, Ohio before retiring. He was one of the first volunteers to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and was an avid golfer with golf being his second love. He was a member of Maple Leaf Golf Club.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, June Davis, a daughter, Penny Kelly of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kim Wall of Bradenton and Kevin Kelly of Port Charlotte; and two great grandchildren, Amber and Jeremy both of Bradenton, Fla.
