Kenneth M. Harvey

Kenneth M. Harvey was born April 27, 1926, on a perfect spring day in Muskegon, Mich., and died Feb. 14, 2002, on a perfect San Diego, Calif., day.

It's been said that wealth is not measured in how big your home is or how large your 401k, but it's measured rather by how large your heart is and how many who knew you enjoyed your company.

If the latter be true, Ken Harvey was a very wealthy man.

Born and raised in Muskegon, leaving as a sailor for the Pacific, Ken spent 1944-1946 fighting for his country on LSM 373. Ken graduated post-war in 1947 from Muskegon High.

Married May 14, 1948, to Jean Massot, they spent 54 happy years together. Starting in Roosevelt Park and then 23 years in Twin Lake, they raised two children. Ken spent this time busy on every civic and church board imaginable and as a firefighter with the Twin Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Ken was employed by Bennett Pump for 34 years. He was a member of the Twin Lake Methodist Church.

Jean and Ken retired to Punta Gorda, Fla., in 1984, where Ken "unretired" to Winn-Dixie supermarkets for 16 years. Ken and Jean enjoyed several years of grandchildren and entertaining "northern" friends. Ken was a lifetime member of VFW Post 10192 and the USS LSM-LSMR Association.

Diagnosed with a progressive terminal disease, Ken, with Jean, moved to San Diego in June 2001 to live with their son and family, and lived his last days in comfort, surrounded by family who loved him greatly. A simple, honest and generous man, Ken gave his love to others freely, never asking for any payment in return. He was a very, very rich fellow indeed and will be greatly missed. Anchors aweigh, my boy ...

He is survived by his loving wife, Jean; daughter, Susan; son, Dave; daughter-in-law, Gayle; four grandchildren, John Charles Burmeister III and Rebecca, Leslie and Amanda Harvey; two great-grandchildren, Bryana and John Charles Burmeister IV; brother, Eugene (Norma) Harvey; and sister, Ruth Haynes.

Cards can be sent to Jean Harvey, 1580 Carmel Ave., Chula Vista, CA 91913. Donations may be sent to Sharp Hospice Care Fund, Grossmon Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 158, La Mesa, CA 91944.
