James J. DuHamel

James J. DuHamel, 93, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Brooklyn and Babylon, N.Y., died Sept. 29, 2002.

Mr. DuHamel was an assistant treasurer of the American Stock Exchange and served as treasurer to the North Babylon School District. He was a proud member of the North Babylon Fire Department and the Babylon Tuna Club.

He was the beloved father of James J. DuHamel Jr., Paul DuHamel, William DuHamel, Philip DuHamel, Dorothy Cofone and Elizabeth Haslam; and the loving grandfather of 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. His wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Smith, preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Port Charlotte Chapel of the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Oct. 3, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, corner of Charlotte and Taylor in Punta Gorda. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, N.Y. Condolences may be sent to James J. DuHamel Jr., 217 Columbia St., Dunellen, NJ 08812.

Ripert F. Polycarpe

Ripert F. Polycarpe, 69, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sept. 29, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Center in Port Charlotte.

He was born Sept. 24, 1933, in Jacmel, Haiti, and moved to Port Charlotte 4 years ago from Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a taxi cab driver in New York City, N.Y., for 11 years before retiring. He was a member of the Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church of Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Genevieve Polycarpe of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Myrlande Laurent of Fort Myers, Fla., and Marjorie Polycarpe of Uniondale, Long Island, N.Y.; two sons, Manasse Polycarpe of Uniondale and Jean-Marc Polycarpe of Port Charlotte; a sister, Odette Polycarpe of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti; three brothers, Georges Polycarpe of Port Charlotte, Marcel Polycarpe of Westbury, Long Island, and Hubert Polycarpe of Jacmel, Haiti; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 4, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 5, at Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church, 17195 Oakleaf Ave., Port Charlotte, with the Rev. Enoc Toby officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Mary Rothe

Mary Rothe, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Oct. 1, 2002.

She was born Aug. 25, 1917, in Paterson, N.J., to the late Rudolph and Theresa (Hansen) Zimmermann. She came to this area seven years ago from Saddle Brook, N.J. She loved caring for her family.

Mary will be greatly missed by her daughter, Marylou (Steven) Sesak of Port Charlotte; grandchildren, Randy McKay and Richard McKay, both of New Jersey, Christine Stevens of Holiday, Fla., and Charlene Rothe of South Dakota; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 2, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. The service in celebration of Mary's life will follow, with the Rev. Bob Carlson officiating. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Rolland E. Weibley Sr.

Rolland Edward Weibley Sr., 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sept. 29, 2002, at Tandem Health Care of Port Charlotte.

He was born Jan. 9, 1913, in Altoona, Pa., and moved to Port Charlotte in 1984 from Paris, Tenn. He was a retired aircraft tool inspector for Avco Corp. of Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Weibley was a member of Port Charlotte United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Landmark Lodge 127 F&AM of Baltimore, Md. He was a former member of the Port Charlotte Yacht Club, the Shuffleboard Club of Port Charlotte and Elks Lodge 2153 of Port Charlotte. During his retirement years in Port Charlotte, Mr. Weibley wrote numerous "Letters to the Editor" to the Charlotte Sun on various subjects.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Gladys Irene Weibley of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Linda (Rick) Black of Rock Island, Tenn., and Marcia Carter of Marshfield, Tenn.; a son, Rolland E. (Rachel) Weibley Jr. of Weybridge Surry, England; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 3, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 4, at Port Charlotte United Methodist Church in the New Room, with the Rev. James R. Kuse officiating. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

John E. Woods Jr.

John E. Woods Jr., 70, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sept. 30, 2002.

John was born in Boston, Mass., on May 19, 1932, the son of John E. and Elenore (O'Donoughue) Woods. John lived most of his life in Cohasset, Mass., and raised his family there. He graduated from Tabor Academy and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. He went on to earn a Master's License, U. S. Merchant Marine, retiring from Moran Towing and Transportation Co. in New York and Miami. John was a member of American Legion Post 110, Destroyer Escort Association of Southwest Florida, Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Boston. John served his country in the U.S. Navy.

John is survived by his very best friend and wife, Jackie Woods; son, Capt. John E. (Martha) Woods III of Greentown, Pa.; a daughter, Alison (Robert) Fahlberg of Richland, Wash.; three granddaughters and a grandson; stepchildren, Blake Dolloff of Port Charlotte, Laura (Dolloff) Gaura of Port Charlotte, Steven Dolloff of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Craig Dolloff of Duxbury, Mass.; three stepgrandsons and three stepgranddaughters; a sister, Margaret (Woods) Harrington of Longmeadow, Mass., and a brother, James Woods of Chatham, Mass. and Pine Island, Fla.; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. John was preceded in death by his parents and a dear sister, Joanne (Woods) Sweeney.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Janet W. Marschall

Janet W. Marschall, 64, of Gulf Cove, Fla., passed away Sept. 30, 2002.

She was born May 14, 1938, in Janesville, Wis., to the late Joseph and Irene (Keokpe) Williams. She came to this area in 1981 from St. Cloud, Fla. Janet was a graduate of Monticello College in Wisconsin. She worked as a CNA for several nursing homes and adult living facilities before retiring. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Janet will be greatly missed by her daughters, Nicole Pelc of Englewood, Fla., and Wendy DeGennaro of St. Cloud; sister, Judith Hoffman of Chandler, Okla.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services for Janet will be private. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Gertrude P. Brainerd

Gertrude P. Brainerd, 78, of North Port, Fla., died Sept. 30, 2002.

She was born Feb. 19, 1924, in Canton, Ill., and moved to North Port 20 years ago from O'Fallon, Ill. Mrs. Brainerd retired as head of the English department at Belleville Area College in Belleville, Ill. In her 36-year teaching career, Mrs. Brainerd taught English, Latin and French. She held a bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University and a master's degree from Indiana University and continued her education for 32 years. She was listed in Who's Who of American Women. She was one of 12 women in the United States to head the English department of a college or university. She was a former member of North Port Elks and North Port Writing Club. She loved to read and volunteered many hours at her local libraries.

Survivors include her loving brother, John E. Perkins of Fort Myers, Fla.; cousins, Roger D. Perkins of Fort Myers, Donald S. Perkins of Lehigh, Fla., and Patty Ann Grose of Canton, Ill.; uncle, Robert Perkins of Coos Bay, Ore.; stepchildren, Kathy Nehring of St. Louis, Mo., Shirley Casillas of Overland, Park, Kan., Robert Brainard of Cape Fair, Mo., and Robyn Gross of Creve Coeur, Mo.; and a good friend, Joanne Richardson.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL. 34238.

Mary E. White

Mary Esther White, 98, of North Port, Fla., died Sept. 28, 2002.

She was born April 2, 1904, in Avon, Ind., to Daniel S. and Emily (nee Mark) Barker. She was a teacher at Avon Elementary School in Avon, retiring in 1961. She moved to North Port in 1962 and resumed teaching at Englewood Elementary School in Englewood, Fla. She was a founding member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Port. She graduated from Indiana University School of Nursing and was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association and Emeritus Club of University of Indiana.

Survivors include her son, William N. (Tammy) White of Springfield, Va.; four grandchildren, Mae Yeng Boatright, Richard Lee White, Robert Lee White and Elizabeth Ann White; and four great-grandchildren, Hannah Marie White, Carson Alexander White, Lauren Grace White and Jessie Boatright.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4, at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, Ind. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 4, at Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mary White to Trinity United Methodist Church, 4285 Wesley Lane, North Port, FL 34287. Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Benjamin Brown Sr.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, God called Benjamin Brown Sr., 89, of Punta Gorda, Fla., home to rest.

He was preceded in his homegoing by his wife, Mary Brown; sister, Jesse Brown; daughters, Almeter Ferrell and Rosetta Brown; son, George Brown; and granddaughter, Angela Evans.

He will be deeply missed by his sister, the Rev. Willie Lee Culpepper; children, the Rev. Benjamin Brown Jr., Cynthia Brown, Richard Brown, Shirley Evans and Major Evans, Nadine Brown, Gearldine Brown, Sandra Hamm and Michael Brown; brother-in-law, Joseph Price ; sister-in-law, Sarah Price Murrell; 20 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, cousins, nephews and friends.

Graveside funeral services and burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Punta Gorda, with the Rev. Mary Green, pastor of House of God Church, Keith Dominion, Fort Myers, Fla., officiating.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia, Fla.

Ruth E. Church

Ruth E. Church, 91, of Charlotte Harbor, Fla., passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Mrs. Church was born March 2, 1912, in Wilkinsburg, Pa. She had resided in this area since 1976, relocating here from Salem, Ohio. She was a member and church secretary for Trinity United Methodist Church, retiring in 1990. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Salem and the Lions Club of Port Charlotte, Fla. She enjoyed working with crafts.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Church of Wichita Falls, Texas; a grandson, Ian Church of Punta Gorda; and two granddaughters, Sigrid Church of Fort Riley, Kan., and Emily Church of Columbus, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her son, George Church, in 1997; and her husband, Wendell Church, in 1998.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Dickey officiating and the Peace River Chapter 30 of the Order of Eastern Star. Burial will be at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home.

T.J. College

T.J. "Tay" College, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte.

He was born Aug. 28, 1917, in Blairsville, Pa., and retired from Conrail Railroad Corporation, where he had over 33 years of service as a conductor.

Tay moved to Port Charlotte in 1977 from Pittsburgh, Pa., and was a resident of Villa Sans Souci Retirement Community. He was an avid golfer, a member of the Punta Gorda Country Club and a former member of the BPOE Elks, Port Charlotte Lodge. He also attended First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte.

Tay is survived by his loving wife of more than 62 1/2 years, Jessie; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many special friends.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bob Carlson officiating. Entombment will be private at Charlotte Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 1144 Veronica St., Port Charlotte, FL 33952; or First Presbyterian Church, 2230 Hariet St. N.E., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

The family has entrusted care and services to Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home.

Doris L. Kennedy

Doris L. Kennedy, 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and formerly of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte.

Mrs. Kennedy was born June 24, 1923, in Berlin N.H., into a family of eight children of Charles and Roseanna Nault. She and her entire family moved to Fort Myers in the 1920s from Berlin, making them local pioneers. Every one of them played a significant part in the construction of the Fort Myers area.

She is survived by her three children, William F. Kennedy of Harbour Heights, Fla., Rose Mary Kennedy Hughes of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Bruce H. Kennedy of Naples, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Kennedy; a son-in-law, Billy Hughes; brothers, Armand Nault of Fort Myers, Robert Nault of Sanford, Fla.; sisters, Geneva Scott of Punta Gorda and Florida Scott of Venice, Fla.; four grandchildren, Rudy Kennedy, Todd (Lynda) Hughes, Burt Kennedy and Ginger Hughes (James) Mace; and nine great-grandchildren, Austin Kennedy, Spencer Hughes, Caleb Kennedy, Jeremiah Kennedy, Miranda Kennedy, Rosey Kennedy, Josh Kennedy, Joseph Kennedy and Hannah Mace.

Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by her husband of many years, William Kennedy; sisters, Jeannette Lavoie and Irene Lamb; and one brother, Morris Nault.

A celebration of her life will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at the family residence. For any additional information or directions, call Rose Mary Hughes.

Marilyn R. McKean

Marilyn Ruth (Dunbar) McKean, 73, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sept. 13, 2001.

Marilyn was born July 16, 1928 in Eagleville-Austinburg Township, Ohio, the daughter of Lester and Caroline (Decker) Dunbar. Marilyn attended Saybrook Elementary and Junior High Schools, and graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1946. Marilyn worked for the C.E.I. for 10 years and later for St. Angelo's Lanes. She enjoyed sewing, swimming, reading and bowling. Marilyn was an active member of the Eastern Star in Ashtabula for many years. She also was a Grange member for 50 years. She recently volunteered for the Charlotte County Florida Habitat for Humanity. She made her home with her daughter, Sue, in the Charlotte County area for the past 16 years.

Marilyn is survived by daughters, Beth Brockmann and Sue McKean; a son, Larry McKean; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of Florida; and one brother, Harry Dunbar of Austinburg. Her parents and one son, John McKean, preceded her in death.

Arrangements will be announced at a later date and services will be held in Ohio.

George MeKosh

George MeKosh, age 76, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sept. 28, 2001, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Born Jan. 31, 1925 in Centralia, Pa., George was a retired operating highway construction engineer who moved to this area from his native Centralia 22 years ago. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion Post 110, and VFW Post 5690, both of Port Charlotte. He was a Roman Catholic.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ann MeKosh; two sons, George Joseph MeKosh of Creston, Iowa and Gerald Joseph MeKosh of Tipton, Ind.; a brother, Joseph MeKosh of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Anna Martin of Alexandria, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services and burial will be held early next week in Pennsylvania. Arrangements by Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel.

James S. Allen M.D.

James S. Allen M.D., 59, of Placida, Fla., died Sept. 26, 1998, at his residence.

Dr. Allen was born Feb. 6, 1939, in Dayton, Ohio, and came to Placida in 1990 from Akron, Ohio. He was a retired urologist and was serving as an adviser at Columbia Englewood Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Y. Allen of Placida; daughter, Deborah Allen of Raleigh, N.C.; sons, Douglas Allen of Akron, Ohio, and Scott Allen of Miami, Fla.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Farley Funeral Home, 211 S. Indiana Ave., Englewood. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Charlotte County, 3028 Caring Way, Port Charlotte, FL 33952. Arrangements are by Farley Funeral Home and Crematory, Englewood Chapel.
