A long-term resident of St. Augustine, loved and admired by everyone who knew her, she and her husband, the author and artist Langston Moffett (1903-1989), and their two children, Cleveland and Read, came to our city in 1940 and made it their home.
Born in the Philippines where her father was an Army officer, Mrs. Moffett grew up in Washington, D.C., and graduated from the Holton Arms School there. A young woman of many talents, she sang and played the piano with distinction and worked as a reporter for a Washington newspaper. After her marriage, she and her husband traveled widely in Europe. Their first son was born in Paris, their second after their return, in Virginia.
During the war years and for some time thereafter, the Moffetts played an active social and cultural role in our city. A member of the Colonial Dames, the St. Augustine Historical Society, the Woman's Exchange and the Little Theater, Mrs. Moffett always took a keen interest in the life and history of her adopted town. She could often be seen wearing a period costume and conducting visitors on informed and entertaining guided tours of the restored area.
The Moffetts went back periodically to Europe. Wherever they went and stayed for any length of time - France, Italy, Spain, Mexico - Mrs. Moffett exercised her rare gift for acquiring a wide circle of lasting friendships. Of her immediate family, Mrs. Moffett leaves her two sons, their wives and her four grandchildren.
