Anthony Bano, 87, St. Augustine, died Nov. 29, 1998, at the Samantha Wilson Care Center at BayView. He was born in Patti, Italy, and he had resided here since 1996. He had owned his own construction business, and he was of the Catholic faith.
Burial will be at a later date at San Lorenzo Cemetery. Survivors include one daughter, Rose Kozsey, a son, John A. Bano, both of St. Augustine; one sister, Betty Gentile, Sanford; and three brothers, Jimmy, Dominic and Michael Bonnano, all of New York. One granddaughter also survives.

Arnold Hagan
Arnold Ray Hagan, 78, St. Augustine, died Nov. 28, 1998, at Flagler Hospital. He was born in Jacksonville, and he had resided here for the past 30 years. He was a retired businessman, having owned and operated his own gas and oil company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, and he was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church. He also held membership in VFW Post No. 2391 and American Legion Post No. 37.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Craig Funeral Home Church, with the Rev. Lois Turner, pastor of Pentecostal Revival Center, officiating. Burial will be in St. Augustine Memorial Park. Friends may call at Craig chapel from 5 to 8 p.m., today.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Hagan, St. Augustine; two daughters, Shirley Joudon, Lyn McMullian, a son, Ernest Hagan, all of St. Augustine; three sisters, Maggie Long, Griffin, Ga., Lucille Pitts, Sanderson, Fla., Juanita DeWitt, Fernandina Beach; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Kenneth Masters
Kenneth Paul Masters, 72, Palm Coast and St. Augustine, died Nov. 29, 1998, at the Mariner Health Care Center. He was born in St. Augustine, and he had resided here most of his life. He was a tug boat captain, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II.
For a time, he served as one of the senior tour boat captains at Palm Coast. He was a deputy sheriff in St. Johns County for nine years and during that period was chief jailer for four years. Of Minorcan heritage, he traced his linage in Florida through 13 generations back to the New Smyrna Colony.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Craig Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery. Friends may call at Craig chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Survivors include one daughter, Juanita Masters Landry, Pierre Port, La.; a son, Larry Oliver Masters, St. Augustine; one sister, Juanita Mier Gardner, St. Augustine; and five grandchildren.
Alton Melvin
Alton E. Melvin, 68, Mandarin, died Nov. 29, 1998. He was born in Mandarin, and he was a printer for 40 years. He was a member of Mandarin United Methodist Church, and he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a former member of the Flatwoods Hunting Club.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Hardage-Giddens Mandarin Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, with the Rev. Patrice Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Mandarin Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., today.

Haywood Pert
Haywood Gordon Pert, 87, St. Augustine, died Nov. 29, 1998, at the St. Johns Health Care Center, following a brief illness. He was born in Palatka and lived there until he entered the military. He later settled in Jacksonville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and flown with Jimmy Dolittle as one of the Marauder Men in bombing raids over Japan. He worked for the Bingham Seed Company, Jacksonville, and Florida Carter in Bayard. Before moving from Palatka, he was a member of the First Baptist Church there and was well known at the Palatka Golf Course.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Masters Funeral Home of Palatka, with the Rev. Charles Rabun officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Palatka, with military honors at graveside by the U.S. Army. Friends may call at Masters chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Pert was preceded in death by his parents, Haywood and Olive Pert and his wife, Mary Douglas Pert.
Survivors include three sisters, Pauline Thompson, Louise Pursley, both of St. Augustine, and Imogene Austin, Live Oak. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mario Hugas
Mario V. Hugas Sr.,85, St. Augustine, died Nov. 30, 1998, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Tampa, and his family moved to St. Augustine when he was seven. He was the son of Luis and Amparo Verges Hugas, and he retired in 1970 as the head maintenance engineer for Flagler Hospital, after 24 years of service. He also worked as an electrician at the miller shops for the Florida East Coast Railway. He was a member of the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, and he was a past grand knight and past Fourth Degree navigator of the Knights of Columbus and a lifetime member of Elks Lodge No. 829. He also held membership in the Ponce de Leon Country Club.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cathedral from 6:30-8:30 p.m., today, and a prayer service begins at 7:30 p.m. today.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Madeline Gaster Hugas; two children, Mario V. Hugas Jr., St. Augustine, Deanna Maria Cooke, Oakland, Calif.; three sisters, Frances Russell, Maria Moore, Rita O'Brien, all of St. Augustine; four grandchildren, Teresa Slyfield, Sandra Smitley, Victor E. Lenora Sykes, 90, died Nov. 30, 1998, in Atlanta, Ga. She was the wife of the late C. Roy Sykes Sr., and the daughter of the late Bert and Fannie (Dupont) Reimer. She was born in Jacksonville Jan. 6, 1908, and she was reared in St. Johns County. She was a long-time resident of both Hastings and St. Augustine, and she was active in the Methodist church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Craig Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. S. Dwight McQueen, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Palatka Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Craig chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Mary Cook
Mary McCarter Cook, 83, Melbourne, died Dec. 2, 1998, at West Melbourne Health Care Center. She was a former St. Augustine resident, and she moved to Melbourne about two weeks ago, after living here since 1969. She was a member of Cathedral Parish.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at San Lorenzo Cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Cook, Ann Redmond, both of Melbourne, Eileen Gnik, Pensacola; one brother, Don McCarter, Lakeland; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Josephine Johnson Ridley, 48, Jacksonville, died Nov. 26, 1998, at University Medical Center, Jacksonville. She was born in High Springs, and she had resided in Jacksonville for over 20 years. She was a member of Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church, Jacksonville, and she was a graduate of Richard J. Murray High School, Class of 1967, St. Augustine. She was employed at the University Medical Center dietary department for 24 years.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New St. James Baptist Church, with the Rev. Nathaniel Jackson, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Tom Diamond, pastor of Abyssinia, assisting. Sidney Robinson Harris, 96, 141 Blanco St., died Nov. 29, 1998, at Flagler Hospital. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and she had resided in St. Augustine since early childhood and was a member of Dawson Chapel CME Church, where she served in many capacities.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dawson Chapel CME Church, with the Rev. C.C. Bell, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Stanley Parkyn
Stanley Matthew Forbes Parkyn, 80, Crescent Beach, died Dec. 1, 1998, at his home, following a long illness. He was a retired newsman and teacher, and he began his career on the Boston Evening Transcript and worked as a reporter, editor and columnist for newspapers and broadcasters in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He taught English for 20 years at Newington High School, suburban Hartford.
In retirement he wrote a number of Christmas stories published in The Record. He was born and educated in New England, and, in World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps.
He and his wife, Marjorie, wintered in Crescent Beach for eight years before moving from Connecticut to Florida in 1989.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Paul and Ronald, Connecticut; two daughters, Sally of Virginia, and Holly, New York; nine grandchildren and one greatgrandson.

Marion Smith
Marion Martin Smith, 96, Hastings, died Dec. 2, 1998, at her home. She was born in Gainesville, Ga., and she had resided in Hastings since 1921. She and her late husband, Clyde P. Smith, started farming potatoes in 1921. That was the beginning of a third generation operation known as Smith Farms of Hastings. She was also active in school and community in her early years in Hastings. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hastings.
