Helmut F. Hampel, 82, St. Augustine, died Sept. 30, 1997, at the Ponce de Leon Care Center. He was born in Berlin, Germany, and he moved to St. Augustine six years ago from Wilmington, Del. He was a retired division manager for Sears and Roebuck.

Milton Owens
Milton Owens, 84, Hastings, died Sept. 29, 1997, in Columbia Putnam Medical Center, Palatka. He was born in Aiken, S.C., and he had resided in St. Johns County for the past 35 years. He was an active member of the Hastings Rotary Club, having served as president and secretary. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary Foundation, and he was a supporter of the Rotary's Ronald McDonald House project. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hastings, and he was a veteran of World War II, serving as an original member of the 107th Artillery Battalion. He served in both Sicily and North Africa. He was retired from the Florida Department of Agriculture, serving as a district supervisor for Putnam, St. Johns and Flagler counties. He worked in the agricultural industry for over 35 years. He attended the Aiken Academy, Aiken, S.C.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, Hampton, S.C. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of services.

William Owens
William Douglas "Red" Owens, 50, Pomona Park, died Sept. 29, 1997, at his home. He was born in Fort Pierce, and he had resided in Abingdon, Va., most of his life. After graduating from John S. Battle High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. While residing in Abingdon, he was employed at Bristol Steel and Iron Works until 1986. He then moved to Florida and was employed by Southern Express Charter Services, Jacksonville, and through that business made frequent trips to St. Augustine. He was a Little League Baseball coach in Abingdon, and he was of the Methodist faith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. View Methodist Church, Abingdon, with the Rev. Donald Thayer officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon. Friends may call at Farris Funeral Home, Abingdon, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
Survivors include his wife, Victoria C. Owens, Pomona Park; two sons, Jack and Jason Owens, both of Jacksonville; and his father, W.J. ``Jack" Owens, Abingdon.

Lance Wyatt Wilkinson, 5 months old, died Sept. 27, 1997, at Shands Teaching Hospital, Gainesville. He was a lifelong resident of Palatka.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bostwick Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Klemm officiating. Burial was in Bostwick Cemetery.
Among his survivors are his mother, Leigh Wilkinson, Palatka; his father, Thomas M. Bostick, Palatka; and paternal grandmother, Deloris Barnes, St. Augustine.

Lester Joseph Kelly, 86, St. Augustine, died Sept. 30, 1997, at Flagler Hospital. He was born in New York City, and he had resided in St. Augustine since 1977. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, and he was a member of the St. Augustine Shores Riverview Club and AARP. He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille, St. Augustine; two daughters, Leslie Kelly Hardacre, New Milford, Conn., Susan Kelly, Rye, N.Y.; and two brothers, Andrew Kelly, Lake Mahopac, N.Y., Timothy Kelly, New Hampshire.

Claude Dean "Chip" Varnes, 77, Federal Point Road, died Sept. 29, 1997, at the Ponce de Leon Care Center, following a long illness. He was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church and had a special interest in the Sunday school department. He was educated in Clay County Schools, and he was a mechanic by trade.
