Velma Kanipe
Memorial services for Velma B. Kanipe, 90, who died Nov. 26, 1997, at the Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Chapel Ministries, with Pastor Donovan Tinsley officiating. Mrs. Kanipe had resided in St. Augustine since 1981.
She was buried beside her late husband, Charlie W. Kanipe, at Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville, N.C.
Survivors include a son, Jack B. Cline, St. Augustine; one sister, Gladys Holmes, High Point, N.C.; and a granddaughter.
Those wishing may make a donation, in her memory, to Hospice Northeast, 1400 Old Dixie Hwy., Suite A, St. Augustine, 32086.

Shaun McCarty
Shaun Patrick McCarty, 48, Mt. Dora, formerly of St. Augustine, died Nov. 25, 1997, at the St. Augustine home of Richard and Ruth Mallett. He was born in Danville, Ill., and he was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Graveside funeral services were held Nov. 28 at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.
Flowers are gratefully declined, and those wishing may make a donation, in his memory, to the American Cancer Society, POB 5355, St. Augustine, 32085.
Survivors include his wife, Louetta Kidwell McCarty; two daughters, Elizabeth and Audrey; a son, Adin; and his mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Joseph Wagner. He was pre-deceased by his father, Ralph Wilfred McCarty.
Craig Funeral Home was in charge.

Richard Peter
Richard Harvey Peter, 64, St. Augustine, died Dec. 1, 1997, at Flagler Hospital East. He was born in Watseka, Ill., and he had resided here since 1952. He was retired from Florida East Coast Railroad, and he had served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 37, and he was of the Methodist faith.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Craig Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Curtis Norton and the Rev. Lucy Norton, Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in St. Augustine Memorial Park. Friends may call at Craig chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Flowers are gratefully accepted, or those wishing may make a contribution, in his memory, to Hospice Northeast, 1400 Old Dixie Hwy., Suite A, St. Augustine, 32086.
Survivors include his mother, Edna Peter, two daughters, Deanna Gross, Dana Theige, all of St. Augustine; a stepson, Derrick Usry, Lawrenceville, Ga.; one sister, Beverly Basile, Sarasota; a brother, Robert Peter, St. Augustine; and three grandchildren.

Cliff Townsend Jr.
B.C. (Cliff) Townsend Jr., 69, St. Augustine, died Dec. 1, 1997, at the University Medical Center, Jacksonville. He was born in Laurel, Miss., and he had resided in St. Augustine since 1957. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and he retired as general manager of Marineland of Florida. He was a 1954 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.A. in geology, and he earned a master's in oceanography from Florida State University in 1956. He was a member of the Pacetti Hunting Club, and after retirement he became involved in real estate investments and breeding and training hunting dogs.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Anastasia Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Moore, pastor, officiating. Private burial services are planned. Friends may call at Craig Funeral Home chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Survivors include three daughters, Loren Zawawi, St. Augustine, Lynne Townsend Albert, Chapel Hill, N.C., Leigh Townsend, Jacksonville; a son, Lyle Clifton Townsend, St. Augustine; three sisters, Laura Ishee, Rose Farragut, Ruth Gavin, two brothers, James and Gus Townsend, all of Laurel; one grandson, Jason Zawawi; and numerous other relatives.

John Andradzki
John Andradzki, 58, Cartersville, Ga., died Nov. 10, 1997, at Floyd Medical Center, Cartersville. He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., and he was a former St. Augustine resident. He was self-employed doing commercial millwork.
Memorial services were held at 4 p.m. Nov. 12 in Parnick Jennings Funeral Home Chapel, Cartersville, with the Rev. Paul Battles officiating. Those wishing may make a contribution, in his memory, to the American Cancer Society, 1256 N. Cobb Parkway, Suite 102, Marietta, Ga. 30062-2420.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Osgood Andradzki, Cartersville; three daughters, Brenda Dodd, Jasper, Ga., Karen Pickel, Carolyn Barnett, both of Cartersville; his mother, Cornelia Klinga Moody, Ocala; a sister, Louise Lovett, Ocala; and five grandchildren.

Cecil Hooker
Cecil Hooker, 49, 6450 U.S. 1 South, died Dec. 2, 1997, at Flagler Hospital. He was born in Whitesburg, Ky., and he came to St. Augustine 20 years ago. He was employed at VAW of St. Augustine.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Croyle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Croyle Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Survivors include his mother, Nannie Yonts, St. Augustine and Whitesburg; three brothers, Ellis Ray and Denny Hooker, both of St. Augustine, Eddie Collins, Knoxville, Tenn.; and one sister, Linda Lou Fields, Whitesburg.

William Lovin
William Donald Lovin, 68, St. Augustine, died Nov. 29, 1997, in St. Augustine. He was born in Commerce, Ga., and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Korea and Vietnam. He was also a former investigator with the Columbia County Sheriff's Department.
Funeral services were to be held today at 3 p.m. at Westover Memorial Park Cemetery, Augusta, Ga., with military honors at graveside. Capt. Kenneth Hancock, U.S. Army chaplain, officiated.
Survivors include his wife, Leann Lovin, St. Augustine; a son, John N. Lovin, Martinez, Ga.; one daughter, Natalie L. Newsome, Statesboro, Ga.; a brother, John B. Lovin, Hesperia, Calif.; one sister, Nell Page, Greensboro, N.C.; and one grandchild.
The Thomas L. King Funeral Home, Martinez, was in charge.

Robert McCalvin
Robert (Vic) McCalvin died Nov. 21, 1997, at the VA Hospital, Denver, Col. He was born in St. Augustine, the son of the late Robert McCalvin and Helen McCalvin Pappy. He was educated in the public schools and graduated from Excelsior High School. He completed his freshman year at Moorehouse College, Atlanta, Ga., and he served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper for 15 years. He was stationed in Denver for nine years, and when he retired, he remained in Denver.
Funeral services were held under the direction of the Pipkin Mortuary, with burial with military honors in Fort Logan National Cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Cherry McDougle, St. Augustine; an uncle, the Rev. William D. Bell, Memphis, Tenn.; and other relatives.

Richard Peter

Sara Van Staagen
Sara Van Staagen, 58, St. Augustine, died Dec. 2, 1997, at the Hospice Northeast Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring, Jacksonville. She was born in New York City, and she had lived in Pleasantville, Westchester County, N.Y., most of her life before moving to St. Augustine 13 years ago. She was a culinary entrepreneur and was a Protestant.
Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Ponce de Leon Resort Tennis Village, Building D.

Funeral services for Frank Hernandez Hoover, 101, 400 N. McLaughlin St., who died Nov. 30, 1997, at the Samantha Wilson Home for Senior Citizens, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke AME Church, with the Rev. Ronald Stafford, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Augustine Memorial Park. Friends may call at Chase and Son Funeral Home chapel from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, and at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of services.

Eunice Richardson
Eunice Mae Henderson Richardson, 85, Jacksonville, died Dec. 2, 1997, at the home of her daughter in Decatur, Ga. She was born in Lake City, and she had resided in Jacksonville for the past 82 years. She was a member of the Greater Grant Memorial AME Church, Jacksonville, and she taught Sunday school, directed several choirs and served as musician of her church for 73 years. She and her late husband, the Rev. F.D. Richardson Sr., owned and operated Richardson the Tailor and Dry Cleaning business in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greater Grant Memorial AME Church, Jacksonville, with the Rev. Y.B. Bruce, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Jacksonville. Friends may call at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the hour of services.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Richardson Brown, Decatur; one son, the Rev. F.D. Richardson Jr., pastor of St. Paul AME Church, St. Augustine; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Jacob van Hoek
Jacob G. van Hoek, 74, died Nov. 26, 1997, in Birmingham, Ala. He was born Dec. 4, 1922, to Dutch parents residing in Muelheim, Germany. He was a mariner and part-time resident of St. Augustine, and he was a former business owner here. He died while returning to St. Augustine from an extended river cruise with his wife of 15 years, Ellen Garrett van Hoek. They were aboard their yacht, Horizons.
Private memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 13 at Memorial Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. Kerry G. Hinkley, pastor, officiating.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Ralph H. van Hoek, Fruit Cove; daughters, Beatrice V. Dean, Fruit Cove, Karen E. Pickering, Fayetteville, N.C., Cherie E. Bowse, Rosalind M. Tallman, both of Jupiter; stepsons, Daniel K., Michael C. and Benjamin J. Berger; sisters in Holland, Tina van Santen, Trudy Elshof; grandchildren, step-grandchildren and other relatives.

Helen Ayala
Helen Anna Ayala, St. Augustine, died Dec. 5, 1997, at Flagler Hospital East. She was born in Chicago, Ill., and had lived here for the past 13 years. She was a member of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, and she worked as a fabricator at VAW.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, with the Rev. Tim Lindenfelser officiating. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery. Friends may call at Craig Funeral Home Monday, 5-8 p.m., with prayers being said at 7 p.m.
She was preceded in death by a son, Albert Ayala.
She is survived by her husband, Jorge Ayala; four daughters, Sakeena Avila, Houston, Texas, Armina Toler, Marina Ayala, both of St. Augustine, Elena Ayala, Miami; five sons, Richard Ayala, St. Augustine, Jorge A. Ayala Jr., Jacksonville, Pedro Iwen, Warrenton, Mo., Tonio Iwen, St. Augustine, Carlo Iwen, Lockport, Ill.; three step-daughters, Elizabeth Pinto, Claudia Ayala, Olga Ayala, all of Chicago; four step-sons, Carlos Ayala, Fort Lauderdale, Jorge E. Ayala, Miami, Jugo Ayala, Haulin, Ind., Alonso Ayala, Colombia; a sister, Margaret Willis, Chicago; 32 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Craig Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Estelle Melvin, 79, longtime St. Augustine resident, died Dec. 4, 1997, at her home. She was born in Waycross, Ga., and she was the wife of the late Robert (Slim) Melvin. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Melvin Jr., and a daughter, Shirley Marie Halasz.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery.
