William E. Evans
William E. Evans, a lifelong resident of St. Augustine, died April 28, at Flagler Hospital East, after a long illness. He was 69.
As a result of his exposure to experimental doses of mustard gas while a Navy recruit in World War II, Mr. Evans suffered a lifetime of increasingly serious health problems, according to a family spokesman. In recent years, he had actively sought recognition of his disabilities by the United States Navy, and at the time of his death Mr. Evans was undergoing new medical evaluations by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Jacksonville and St. Petersburg. Last year, the DVA notified him that they were aware of the problems his wartime exposure to mustard gas may have caused.
William Ellis Evans was born July 17, 1927 at Florida East Coast Hospital, the son of Katherine Louise Evans and Marvin Monroe Evans. He attended local schools and enlisted in the United States Navy in November 1944, at the age of 17. He was one of about 2,000 raw recruits asked to participate in testing protective suits and masks in case of chemical attack. The tests involved exposure to mustard gas and Lewisite, an ammonia compound, which caused him severe and recurrent illness.
Although he had planned to make the Navy his career, Mr. Evans was discharged in March 1947 for ``motion sickness,'' and told not discuss the mustard gas experiments with anyone. He returned to St. Augustine and was employed by Southern Bell, St. Augustine Trawlers, and Grumman St. Augustine, until his disabilities forced him to retire in 1993.
Funeral services for Mr. Evans were held this morning at Craig Funeral Home chapel.
