Emma Gayle Martin Vincent, 93, St. Augustine, died June 19, 1998, at the Ponce de Leon Care Center. She moved to St. Augustine after her husband's retirement as a U.S. Government contract civil engineer. She was born in Columbia County, Fla., Dec. 20, 1904, and she had resided in St. Augustine since 1954. She was the daughter of the late Giles Ellis Martin and Lucy Francis McFadden Martin, and she married First Lt. George Martin Vincent, USA, a decorated World War I veteran, June 29, 1927. She was a former teacher in High Springs, Bunnell and Waycross, Ga., and she was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist and was a former reader. She served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross in Georgia, during World War II, and she had worked at Akras Ladies fashions beginning in 1955 for a number of years.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. June 30 at Philippi Cemetery, Columbia County. The family will receive friends at Craig Funeral Home Monday from 7 to 8 p.m.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Gayle Vincent Hatmaker, Harrisonburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Lt. Paul Giles Hatmaker, USN, Amanda Gayle Hatmaker; and four great-grandchildren.
Hope Smith
Hope Hunter Lathers Smith passed from this life June 17, 1998, at the Earl Hadlow Center for Caring in Mandarin, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Smith, a Florida native, was born Sept. 9, 1922, to Jessie Mae Hunter and Matthew Lathers in Winter Haven. Most of her youth was spent in Daytona Beach. She graduated from Mainland High School Class of 1941 and continued to be active in their yearly class reunions. After high school, Mrs. Smith attended Appalachian State College, Boone, N.C., and Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Miami.
After raising her family, she returned to nursing, graduating from the St. Johns County LPN program in 1968.
Mrs. Smith retired from Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville in 1985. After retirement, she continued to be active in nursing as a hospice volunteer. In the past, she was a member of the Junior Service League, Azalea Garden Club, the Women's AA Unity Group and Republican Women's Club. She was a parishioner of St. Anastasia Catholic Church.
She was the loving mother of four - Mrs. Barbara (Neil) Ortagus, Mrs. Nell (John) Gibson, Mr. Sherwood Joseph ``Pete'' (Vickie) Smith, all of St. Augustine, and Irving Shelby ``Bud'' Smith, Burlington, Vt. She was the proud Nana of Aboude and Abraham Chatila, Hope Rhiannon and Erica Mae Smith.
A private memorial Mass will be said at St. Anastasia Catholic Church.

Grace Genevieve Byrd, 70, Elkton, died June 19, 1998, at her home. She was born in Littelstown, Pa., and was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Elkton.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with the Rev. Patrick Carroll, pastor, and the Rev. Patrick Doody officiating. Burial will be in St. Ambrose Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Anita Byrd and Diane Felice, both of Elkton; four sons, Randy and Larry Byrd, both of Elkton, James Byrd, Dublin, Ga., and Tim Byrd, DeRidder, La.; four sisters, Pauline Conroy, Hampstead, Md., Alice Hammond and Catherine Stafford, both of Charleston, S.C., and Margaret Simmons, Gainesville; two half-sisters, Josephine Stallings, DeRidder, La., and Jane Chapman, Gildamore, N.Y.; one half-brother, Tom Smith, Interlachen; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Samuel Cummings
Samuel J. ``Cuda'' Cummings, 77, of St. Augustine died at Flagler Hospital East June 17, 1998. He was a native of Dothan, Ala., a World War II veteran, surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Chase Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. F.D. Richardson Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Chase Chapel from 5-9 p.m. today.
He is survived by three daughters, Francena Cummings, Tallahassee, Beverly C. Harrison, Thomasville, Ga., and Brenda C. Stover, Cleveland, Ohio; two sons, Ralph S. Cummings and Leonard E. Cummings, both of Cleveland, Ohio; one sister, Annie L. Davis, St. Augustine; 10 children and one great grandchild.

Paul R. Fuchs, 85, died June 19, 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Frieda; one daughter, Margit Walsh; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Graveside services for May Adell Taylor, age 64, of St. Augustine, who died June 17, 1998, at Flagler Hospital East, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at San Lorenzo Cemetery. The Rev. Patrick Cooke, associate pastor of the Cathedral-Basilica officiated.
She was preceded in death by her daughter: Ellen Cottle.
She is survived by her children, Patrick Garrett, Donna Tibbs and Judy Hollender; one sister, Valerie Roberts; and one brother, Neco Taylor, all of St. Augustine, several nieces and nephews and care giver Jerry Tibbs.

Betty Loveland
Betty Ann Loveland, 70, St. Augustine, died June 20, 1998, at the St. Augustine Health and Rehab Center. She was a lifelong resident of St. Augustine, and she was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was a 1944 graduate of Ketterlinus High School, and she attended Florida State University for Women.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Curtis Norton, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call at Craig Funeral Home chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
Survivors include one daughter, Maranne S. Banach; a son, Eugene B. Loveland; one brother, Robert Andreu, all of St. Augustine; and eight grandchildren.

Marilyn Jean Carroll, 68, St. Augustine, died June 21, 1998, at her home. She was born in Chicago, Ill., and she had resided here since 1991. She was retired from Bell South, where she worked as a manager for Yellow Page advertising, and she was of the Lutheran faith.
Private services are planned.
Survivors include two sons, Terrance J. Rose, Charlotte, N.C., Timothy C. Rose, Huntsville, Ala.; and five grandchildren.

Kathryn Couver
Kathryn Overeynder Couver, 75, Palatka, died June 18, 1998. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and she had resided in Palatka since 1945, moving there from Ashland, Ohio. She and her late husband, Lewington A. ``Lew'' Couver, had owned and operated Couver's office supply for 50 years. She was an accomplished artist and floral arranger as well as an avid gardener. In the past, Mrs. Couver was active in various civic organizations.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. today at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home, Palatka. Private family burial will be at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Vasile Dovan
Vasile Dovan, 59, Hastings, died June 21, 1998, in Gainesville. He was born in Romania, and he had resided in Hastings for two years, moving there from New Jersey.
Memorial services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Anastasia Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Dovan, Hastings; two sons, Joseph G. Dovan, Jacksonville, and Jeffrey A. Dovan.

Mattie Irene Lindsey, 93, St. Augustine, died June 21, 1998, at the home of her daughter in Neptune Beach. She was born in Berrin County, Ga., and she had resided in St. Augustine since 1949. She was a member of Ancient City Baptist Church.
