Earl Mims of Westville died Jan. 1 at Wiregrass Medical Center following a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Holmes County March 12, 1934, son of the late Oscar Lloyd and Mable Ingalls Mims.
He began his working career with Geneva Cotton Mill. After 42 years of service in the textile industry, he retired as a maintenance technician at Clinton Mills in 1996. He was a member of Poplar Head United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Mims; two brothers-in-law, Charles Grantham and Wayne McDuffie, and a sister-in-law, Lucille Mims.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Louise Thomas Mims of Westville; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary Jo Craft, Kathy and Robert Harker, all of Westville, Carolyn and Danny Holloway of Geneva, Barbara and Joey Marsh of Bonifay; two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Caroline Mims, John W. and Teresa Mims, all of Westville; six sisters and three brothers-in-law, Geraldine and Ralph Gillman, Edna Joyce Mims, Christine and Jerry Prescott, Elizabeth McDuffie, Darlene and Chris Hudson, all of Westville, and Mary Grantham of Hartsville, S.C.; one brother, Ervin Mims of Westville, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.
Funeral was held Jan. 3 at Poplar Head United Methodist Church with Chuck Grantham and the Revs. Eddie Eaton and Jim Mashburn officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Geneva in charge of arrangements.
Gertrude Allen, 75
Gertrude Brunise Allen of Cottondale died Dec. 31 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala. She was born in Feb. 13, 1931, in Pike County, Ala., to the late Henry Z. and Lois Elizabeth Napper Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay, and a grandson, Roy Towne.
Survivors include three sons, Lee Allen of Marianna, Ricky Allen of Kynesville and Jason Allen of Graceville; five daughters, Diane Smith of Campbellton, Mary Freed of Compass Lake in the Hills, Linda Register of Graceville, Elizabeth Cook of Two Egg, and Peggy Williams of Marianna; three brothers, Rex Levon Wilson and William Wilson, both of Graceville, and Addis “Jimmy” Wilson of Troy, Ala.; a sister, Corena Courtney of Clio, Ala., 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was held Jan. 4 at First Baptist Church of Campbellton with the Rev. Jackie Register officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery with James & Lipford Funeral Home of Graceville directing.
Memorial donations may be made to the building fund at First Baptist Church of Campbellton.
Virginia Agnes DuRant, 79
Virginia DuRant of Houston, Texas, died Dec. 30 at her home there. She was a former resident of Bonifay.
Survivors include a daughter, Michele Angel and husband, Jack, of Houston; sister, Joyce Vaught of Fayetteville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews, including Dennis and Meredith DuRant of Bonifay and Sylvia Yarbrough of Westville, one grandson and a granddaughter.
Services were held Jan. 4 at First United Methodist Church in Bonifay with the Rev. Jeff Spicer officiating.
Burial was in Bonifay Cemetery with Sims Funeral Home of Bonifay directing.
Ralph Sellers, 76
Ralph Sellers of Bonifay died Dec. 28 at Doctors Memorial Hospital there. He was born in Bonifay Sept. 18, 1930.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lenoia Sellers, and two brothers, Theron Paul and O.B. Paul.
Survivors include his wife, Dixie Sellers of Bonifay; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and Renee Sellers of Westville, Randy and Julie Sellers of Bonifay; a daughter, Gwen Sellers of Bonifay, and two grandchildren.
Funeral was held Dec. 31 at First Baptist Church in Bonifay with the Revs. Johnny Bradshaw, Shelly Chandler and Jeep Sullivan officiating.
Burial was in Sellers’ Cemetery with Peel Funeral Home of Bonifay directing.
Lottie McCormick, 63
Lottie Jean McCormick of Greenhead died Dec. 28 at her home. She was born in Wausau and was a lifelong resident of the area.
She was a member of Wausau Assembly of God.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mallie and Gladys Pettis, and a sister, Shirley Mims.
Survivors include three brothers and sisters-in-law, J.T. and Janice Pettis, Levon and Marie Pettis, Donald and Sabrina Pettis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Jerry Maddux, Kim and Sammy Pence; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa Cox, and five grandchildren.
Funeral was held Dec. 31 at Wausau Assembly of God Church in Wausau with the Rev. Danny Burnes officiating. Burial followed in Barfield Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home of Chipley directing.
Sarah Simmons, 80
Sarah Helen Simmons of Marianna died Dec. 28 in Dothan, Ala. She was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Hartford, Ala., to Code and Edna (Cobb) Ross.
Survivors include her husband, Grant Simmons of Marianna; one son, Al Simmons of Bonifay; a brother, Jimmy Ross of Geneva, Ala.; two sisters, Margaret Miller of Bonifay and Mary Brown of Leesburg; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Services were held Dec. 31 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gary Miller officiating.
Burial followed in Bonifay City Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home of Chipley directing.
John E. Moon, 63
John Earl Moon of Bonifay died Dec. 29 at Doctors Memorial Hospital there. He was born Oct. 28, 1943, in Hartford, Ala., to the late Johnny Albert and Vertie Clark Moon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Jo Wilkerson.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Florance Moon of Bonifay; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert and Kim Moon of Bailey, Ga., Joe Moon of Highland Park, Phillip and Joy Moon of Leesburg, Jeremy and Sarah Moon of Bonifay; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Angela and Scott Siniard, Karon and Anthony Brazil and Kathy Moon, all of Bonifay; two brothers, Tommy Ray Moon of Tennessee and Charlie Moon of Leesburg; mother-in-law, Mary Kirkland Tice of Bonifay, 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorialization was by cremation with Peel Funeral Home of Bonifay in charge of arrangements.
A memorial service was held Jan. 3 at the Church of God of Prophecy in Bonifay.
